You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.

Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?

Mississippi used to be at or near the bottom national literacy rankings and as I understand, their near meteoric surge in literacy rate ranking is almost entirely due to the fact that they largely still use phonics

We've done the research on how to make a good education system and it's been put into practice irl via Finland, who has one of the best education systems in the world and it was built almost entirely using US research.

I find it strange when people take a hardline "no multiplicity outside DID or OSDD" stance and call endogenic systems or whatever medical misinformation, because this is right in the diagnostic criteria. People experience these things for religious and cultural reasons. For "endogenics" it is a subcultural practice. A framing device for experiences that can be psychological and social.

There's even this study that concludes as such and only states more study is needed to conclude whether it is healthy or not. There is quite a lot of nuance to this issue, I think. But the human brain is capable of a lot and its short sighted to limit it even more than the DSM-V does... and actively cruel and senseless to harass people for it.

I also think about how I started out as someone who identified as having "headmates" and because of that cultural space to describe a non-medical experience I was able to realize at my own pace the trauma behind what I would realize was OSDD. That is a useful thing for culture to have, a neutral or spiritual descriptor for a benign version of something that can become medically significant. I was not 100% aware of my traumas and their depths at the time and if i had had people coming and demanding I dig them up I could very well have retraumatized myself deeply... or worse just fabricated memories which we know the human mind is capable of doing and was a big problem with therapists back when DID was still MPD.

it turns out a lot of people are actually on the same page about whether or not they'd work if they didn't have to earn money, we just all seem to have wildly different definitions of what counts as work. i'll see one person say "of course i would, i'd still want to create art and volunteer in my local community" and another say "hell no i wouldn't, i'd quit work and just create art and volunteer in my local community" and then they look at eachother like they said something incomprehensible.

I attended an optional What to do if ICE comes to your library training and was given much the same advice: make sure someone is recording. Keep them out of arm's reach of any agents, but don't hide that they're recording. Simply being recorded changes the agents' attitude and behavior.
