Actually, you know what? I’m breaking this out into its own post, because it’s important:

If you’re thinking of using a photo, or a drawing, or a story you wrote, a piece of non-fiction text from a friend’s blog, or info from your job, or info about yourself or your family, etc. etc. as part of a prompt for an AI model, ask yourself this simple question: Would you give that thing to some random guy in the tech industry, via a website which outright told you that he was running a data harvesting scheme? If the answer is no, then for the love of god, do not give that thing to any AI.

Because, not to put to fine a point on it? That is literally what you are doing when you input literally anything into a closed model you don’t own, and all of the ai models that you can play with “for free” are closed models that you don’t own.

This is literally just the high tech equivalent of “find out your stripper name - your first name is your mother’s maiden name, your middle name is the street you grew up on, and your last name is the answer to your third security question!” I am genuinely horrified by how many of y’all are falling for this.

By the way? This includes co-pilot. This includes Photoshop’s new generative fill. The deal with the devil that these companies are offering is “we’ll do amazing work for you if you just let us own everything you do via our tool, and also everything you let our tool touch, forever.” And I don’t doubt that whole industries are going to take that deal, but I also don’t doubt that they’ll spend a lifetime regretting it. Is the small boost in productivity that these tools are offering really worth handing a data harvesting scheme your entire portfolio? Really? You can’t unring a bell, and you can’t get your work back once you feed it into these things. Please think very carefully before you throw your creative life away.
