Thank you to all who participated in avatar whumptober 2025!
We had lots of exciting whump going around. Many tortured blorbos. I think we did a good job for the first attempt.
The AO3 collection will remain open through November because time isn't real and who cares if you post something a month late? I know I don't care. I will periodically check this blog to see if there are any late submissions, but other than that...

Bad habits
"Okay Pema, you're next."
Pema looked up at her like a deer fox caught in headlights. Kya couldn't even think of a time Pema looked scared like she did today. It certainly was a strange expression to see on her sister-in-law's face, but it was something she had been keeping track of out of the corner of her eye as she took the kids one by one to get checked over. She had assumed the fear would dissipate once all the children were looked at, but Pema was still sitting there with that shell-shocked look on her face.
"What?"
"You're up next," Kya said softly as to not disturb the kids or Korra's friends.
"I'm fine." Pema shifted Rohan in her arms to press him closer.
Kya raised an eyebrow at her. Pema might be scared, but it looked like she was going to hold on to her stubborn nature in spite of it all. Good. Shaken but not broken. She could work with that.
"Then what are those?" Kya pointed at Pema's face, specifically the two black eyes spreading out from a bruise on the bridge of her nose.
Pema's hand went up to touch her face like there was something to wipe off, but she stopped herself before making contact. Kya wondered if Pema was confused and still in shock, or if her pain tolerance was still through the roof after giving birth.
"It's nothing. I'm fine."
Kya crouched down so she wasn't hovering over the woman and to keep their conversation even more private. "Look, you've got two black eyes and the kids shouldn't see you like that when they wake up. It'll only take a few minutes."
The anxiety was evident on Pema's face as her gaze quickly flicked over to where the kids were napping on their uncle Bumi in the waiting room. He held Meelo in his arms and each of the girls were using one of his legs as pillows.
"I got them. Go ahead." Bumi gave a nod and a reassuring smile.
Kya held out her hand as she stood. Pema didn't take it, but acquiesced and followed her into the nearby empty room.
"Okay, sit on the bed and tell me what happened."
Kya brought over the basin and pretended to busy herself with filling it with fresh water while she was really just watching how Pema was moving. Her body seemed stiff, and if Kya knew her better she might be able to say one way or the other if that little displeased look on her face was her suppressing a wince or not as she sat down. Tenzin had stupidly tried to hide his injuries, and Kya didn't know Pema well enough to know if she would do the same.
"I got hit in the face."
"Obviously." Kya brought water to her hand from the basin. "Wanna put him down for a second? I don't want you to drop him."
Pema looked over her shoulder at the large hospital bed as though she was checking to see if it was really there. Kya saw a bruise poking out from the back of her neck and wondered if her little brother was teaching bad habits to his wife.
"The bed's big enough and he won't be crawling any time soon," Kya said when Pema didn't make any movement to put the infant down.
"Right. Okay," Pema said in a way that Kya could only describe as numb. She stood, slowly placed Rohan down with shaking arms, and then sat again.
"Do you want the healing pool?"
"It's just my face." Pema shook her head.
Kya approached and poked the bruise on Pema's neck that had found shelter under her messy hair. "Then what's that?"
Pema swatted Kya's hand away. "It's nothing. Shouldn't you be helping Korra?"
"I've done all I can for Korra today. She needs to see mom." Kya held her hand up that had the water swirling around it. "Ready?"
Pema nodded and closed her eyes. "Go ahead."
The water began to glow a soft blue as Kya activated her chi for the healing. She placed the water directly over Pema's eyes and nose and used her other hand to silently bring over more water from the basin. Kya used that hand to covertly run more healing water around Pema's body without touching her in order to look for any more wounds the woman didn't want to tell her about.
There was something wrong with her arm and the entire side of her torso was inflamed. Her abdominal region was a mess.
"Did you see a healer after you gave birth?"
"There wasn't time."
The healing glow stopped and Kya removed all the water to put it back in the basin. This self-sacrificing shit was only going to cause more damage in the long run. "You need to get in a healing pool."
Pema opened her mouth, Kya assumed in order to protest, and cut her off.
"You gave birth four days ago, didn't see a healer, got ran out of your home, and kidnapped by terrorists. You're going in the pool whether you like it or not."
The two stared at each other. Kya could practically see the gears turning in Pema's head.
"I will sedate you if you don't come willingly."
Pema scoffed in disbelief. "You can't do that. You can't force someone to get healed."
Kya crossed her arms. "Wanna bet?"
A few minutes later Rohan had been dropped off with Tenzin who looked like he sorely needed a break from trying to talk to Korra, and the women were in a room downstairs with a healing pool. Pema was livid, and Kya went about preparing the water like there was nothing unusual.
"Change into the robe unless you want your dress soaked." Kya nodded at the folded robe on the side while swirling her hand around in the pool to make sure the temperature was right. She saw Pema looking around, most likely for a place to get changed. "Typically, I'd let you use the changing room down the hall, but I'm not convinced you won't try to run away. Just get changed here, it's nothing I haven't seen before."
If looks could kill, Kya would have been a corpse on the floor.
Pema turned her back to Kya and quickly got undressed. Kya watched with the professional eyes of a healer to see if any of the wounds she sussed out before were visible, and the bruises and burn marks she saw were concerning. Dark purple circles dotted her arm and shoulder at pressure points and an angry red burn marred her side spreading out over her ribcage. Kya turned back to the healing pool to school her face.
The kids had been practically untouched. Ikki cried more from fear than pain as she told Kya about how one of the men slapped her for talking too much, Jinora and Meelo had made it out unscathed, and she fully believed Tenzin had gotten the worst of it when he reluctantly showed off the hand print bruise around his neck. How was it that Pema had all these injuries?
Again Kya offered her hand to Pema when she stepped into the pool, but again she was slighted. Pema laid down and stared at the ceiling.
Usually Kya would ask the patient if they were ready before beginning the session, but Pema was such a short fuse right now she just decided to start. The pool glowed blue and gently rocked Pema back and forth as Kya performed her healing kata.
"So, what happened?"
Pema glared at her and looked away again. "We were kidnapped by crazy people."
"Right, that part I am aware of." Kya pouted. She had never gotten to know Pema the same way Bumi had, and she wasn't sure how to talk to her. "The kids and Tenz say you were separated from them."
There was a stretch of silence in which it looked like Pema was beating back a scowl. "Non-benders had to go somewhere else."
"Somewhere they were beaten and electrocuted?"
"Okay." Pema sat up. "We're done here."
"Pema, Pema please." Kya put a firm hand on her shoulder to keep her sitting and was grateful yet again that looks didn't actually kill people. "I'm sorry. It's just that no one knows what happened to you and Rohan and we're worried. Me especially after seeing that damage. What the hell happened to you?"
Pema did something Kya had never seen her do before and pulled her knees up to her chest to hug them. The water sloshed around as it clung to the thin robe. The defeated position reminded her of something Ikki would do when she was upset, but she supposed this is where the girl got it from in the first place. It looked like Pema was chewing on her thoughts.
"They separated us and took Rohan from me," she finally said. "I tried to fight them… and they didn't like that." Her shoulders sagged and the next words came quieter. "Got chi blocked and electrocuted. Woke up in a cell and…" she trailed off, pushing her face into her knees.
Kya tried to play it cool. Bumi was busy with the kids and Tenzin said Pema refused to speak to him about anything that happened while they were separated. It was all on her to find out what Pema's ordeal had been. She needed to know in order to help Pema and her family, and mom was going to need details when they arrived at home. Kya did her best to encourage her to continue.
Play it cool. Play it cool.
"Woke up in a cell and…?"
"They—uhm—" Pema looked at her. The rage was gone from her eyes but the fear was back. "Don't judge me too hard, okay? I was— I was really tired."
Kya pulled her hand back to fold it in her lap with the other one and nodded. "Okay."
"They wanted me to join them." Pema looked back at her knees. "I said no."
Kya waited for the part that was risking judgment, but nothing came. "Do you wish you said yes?"
The rage was back again. "Of course not!"
"Yeesh, sorry." Kya put her hands up in surrender. How her little brother dealt with this hothead she would never understand. But then again, he seemed to be into that kind of thing. "What am I supposed to judge you for? You said no to joining a cult that goes against everything you believe in. That's what you're supposed to do."
"No, they—" Tears filled Pema's eyes and she hugged her legs tighter. "They said they would bring Rohan back if I said yes. I still said no."
"Oh, Pema." Kya reached over to put her hand back on Pema's shoulder, not to keep her down this time, but to support her. "They were playing games with you because you were vulnerable. You did the right thing."
Pema sniffled and wiped her nose on her wet sleeve. "You don't— you don't think I'm a bad mother? I said no to getting my baby back I—" Her words cracked on a sob and she buried her face in her hands— "What is wrong with me?"
Kya got as close to the pool as she could get without falling in and pulled Pema's sopping wet upper half into a hug. Much to her surprise, Pema reached up to return the embrace while she cried. Kya didn't disillusion herself to think that Pema actually wanted to hug her, but the woman had apparently been psychologically abused on top everything else, and Kya knew that sometimes being a healer meant doling out hugs.
"You did the right thing and Rohan wasn't hurt." Kya stroked Pema's hair and pressed her cheek to the crown of her head. "You did the right thing."
A few minutes went by of Pema airing her sobs before she calmed down. Eventually her arms dropped from around Kya and she pulled back to wipe her face, which wasn't very effective considering she was soaked from the pool.
"Sorry." Pema wiped her eyes. "Please don't tell anyone."
Kya pursed her lips. Tenzin was going to know she was withholding something and squeeze it out of her eventually. He was such an overprotective husband and father and such an annoying little brother. It was like he could smell when something was wrong with the kids or his wife, and thanks to the eight-day trip to the South departing the following day, they were all going to be trapped in a sardine can together for the foreseeable future. Those were all terrible secret-keeping conditions. Tenzin was going to be so unbearable.
"I won't tell as long as you lay back down and let me fix you up." Kya pushed some tangled wet hair off Pema's face.
"Really?"
Pema sniffled and looked up at her. Not for the first time since their first meeting Kya was caught off guard by how young Pema was. Her face showed barely a wrinkle and her eyes were so wide and innocent, it almost hurt to lie to her.
"Really."
The corners of Pema's lips wobbled up into the best appreciative smile she could muster. "Thank you."
"Lay down." Kya got back in position to perform her healing kata while Pema settled into the pool. "I won't tell anyone anything, but you should think about telling Tenzin yourself."
Before he pries it out of me, Kya thought.
"I know. I just—" Pema looked down at her feet— "I don't know if he would forgive me."
"I've known Tenz for a very long time and I've never seen him look at anyone the way I've see him look at you." Kya started back up on the healing. "He loves you, Pema. He'll understand."
Pema nodded. "You're probably right. Thanks."
"Anytime."
Kya smiled and made sure to pull as much chi from Pema's body as she could for the healing so the woman would be asleep when they went back upstairs. Tenzin's questions would have to wait because Kya already had her work cut out for her.
The whole family needed a mind healer, and Kya tasked herself with finding one before they left the docks tomorrow.

"Here you are, Master Tenzin." Abbot Shung gestured out to the room full of people asleep on tiny beds. Not even tiny beds— triage cots.
"What is this? Are they ill?" Tenzin asked as he ventured into the repurposed meditation hall.
Each cot contained a slumbering acolyte dressed in only a nightgown. Their faces were mostly recognizable from his trips to the temple. Teenage girls, he noted. Almost every one he had watched grow up in some way shape or form. He passed by the beds wishing his mother had come with him on this trip, but Abbot Shung hadn't requested a healer's presence, and father's state was getting worse by the day. Aang needed Katara at his side.
Tenzin stopped to take one girls pulses, the one he didn't recognize. Any information he could discern would be good to pass along to a proper healer. The thrum of the young acolyte's heart pounded rapidly against his thumb, too fast for a child, but he figured this must be a symptom of whatever illness she was suffering from. He pulled back her eyelid to see if her pupil responded to light and jumped back from shock when her emerald eye looked right at him.
"They are not ill." Abbot Shung stepped up next to him. "These are the healthiest potentials from all of the temples." His smile did not waver. "Any one, or each one, will make a good bride."
Tenzin looked down at the Abbot, then around at the half dozen beds full of children wondering if he heard the man correctly. "What?"
"Avatar Aang's time is nearing its end, and he has only you to show for his time on this earth."
"I think you're forgetting about Kya and Bumi…"
"You're the only one that matters, Master Tenzin," Shung said sagely. "You're the only airbender, and it is time for you to fulfill your destiny and begin having children." The abbot gestured with his hands folded in his sleeves at the girl Tenzin had checked the pulse on. "This one is an excellent choice. Rumor has it that her ancestors were airbenders."
"Are you insane?" Tenzin's brow furrowed and he looked around again, recoiling from Shung's absurd words. "Why are they asleep?"
Tenzin's mouth opened and closed. He looked around again hoping he would wake up from this strange nightmare, but everything remained the same no matter how much time he stalled for. "Everybody up and back to your rooms, your presence is no longer required."
Abbot Shung shook his head. "Not insane, Master Tenzin. Just being realistic about the future."
The elder acolyte approached the sleeping girl and trailed a hand up her bare arm.
The girl didn't respond.
Tenzin's skin crawled.
"They are not sleeping. They are waiting for you."
No one moved. The smile remained on Abbot Shung's face.
"What did you do to them?" Tenzin hissed.
"The potential brides have been injected with shirshu toxin." Shung's smile finally faded to a flat line and he looked detestfully at the girl by his leg. "Not all of them came willingly."
"You did what?!" A breeze flipped through Tenzin's cape.
"It's for the best, Master Tenzin. Please pick one and we'll send her to your room."
Tenzin took an involuntary step back. "Abbot Shung— this is wrong. What have you been doing to these poor girls?"
Shung frowned now. "Ensuring the future of the air nation isn't wrong. If you decide to ignore your responsibilities, that will be wrong."
In three strides Tenzin was on Abbot Shung pushing him against the stone wall with fistfuls of his robe wound tightly in his fingers. "You are never going to set foot in a temple ever again. This is sick. You're sick—"
Tenzin felt more than heard the crackling of firebending in the air. He jumped back just in time to avoid the controlled whip of flame from singing his arms. He turned to fight and saw a familiar White Lotus sentry holding daggers of flames. Another sentry entered the hall behind him, an earthbender. Not a good element to fight against when trying to preserve a thousand-year-old temple.
"What are you doing?" Tenzin shouted.
"Intervening," the firebender said. "Abbot Shung is in charge here."
"What?!"
"Master, Tenzin please," Shung said, "there is no reason to fight. Each and every one of these women made the decision to be an acolyte. They knew what they were signing up for."
Tenzin looked at the men surrounding him and knew that talking wasn't going to get his way out of this one. He needed to secure these children and then secure the temple. He needed to secure everyone in the ranks of the White Lotus and inform his father of this atrocity.
Fire—Earth—Non-bender
Izumi—Lin—Bumi
Deciding the earthbender in the back was the most dangerous, Tenzin blasted a curved shot at the man and then swept low to take the firebender out at the knees with another wide attack. They both went down hard and rolled from the force of the wind all the way back to the meditation hall's entrance. Tenzin righted himself to get his hands on Abbot Shung and felt the dull prick of a needle in his shoulder.
Ah— his mistake. Never underestimate the non-bender.
As quickly as he stood, he was sent back down to the stone floor.
Tenzin could only see Abbot Shung's shoes in his fading vision as the elder acolyte spoke.
"You've made this more difficult for everyone, Master Tenzin." A long, weary sigh. "If you do that again, there will be consequences."
Rough hands picked up him and dragged him out of the meditation hall. To where, he would soon find out.

summary: Touch is not a matter of desire when they are two halves of a whole; a touch from one half to the other is no different than to touch one’s self. Raava cannot refuse her own touch.
rating: M (see tags for content, nothing overtly explicit & no actual sex, all mindgames, but considering the nature of some prompts listed...)
notes: posting literally RIGHT after midnight on the 14th (in my timezone) to split the difference between the two days...and i’m also really happy with how this came out, esp because it is..something i've never really written before, and i truly feed off of raava and vaatu being as toxic and dysfunctional as possible. vaatu I'm SORRY for writing you on your very worst behavior </3
;;
The moon is new, the sky already a void black when it forces them to stop.
Tonight’s resting place is not Raava’s favorite—they are much too exposed for her taste; no forest to hide them from the elements or watching eyes, only open, empty space in all directions.
The night is cold, but where she is, nestled into Wan’s heat on one side and a dwindling fire on the other, is warm enough to forget. His arms around her, her face burrowed in his chest, the cold is not the only thing she can almost forget.
Their nights are running low; it’s a fact she cannot stomach.
So for now, they sleep beneath the void night sky, and sleep is her welcome reprieve.
Raava doesn’t know how long it’s been, only that the fire is nearly out when her eyes flutter open to subtle movement interrupting her stillness. Wan draws her tighter into him, and she is helpless as ever to resist.
The body beside her is warm, warm as ever, in its solid form that presses to hers. A hand slides over her waist, lower as it approaches the crease where her hip meets thigh, and she whines quietly.
His name, that’s the soft moan on her lips—the human that bends her in every possible way, just as he does now, she pleads for him.
The faint cry is swallowed by a mouth that meets hers. Her lips part on instinct, on hunger, and she reaches to pull him closer. Mouth open, two tongues slide together, and her eyes remain closed.
Then something deep, deep in the back of her mind tells her to stop. Not Vaatu’s voice, the one that slips through the cracks to mock her, nor the Ancient Ones and their antiquated reminders of what is forbidden; something else.
This voice is her own.
So she does. She heeds the voice and its warning in the very same second that she realizes this mouth is wrong—it is not the taste or touch she knows, it’s—
Raava tears her face away, her neck arching back, as she gasps, “you—!”

Summary: Following the capture of a Northern Tribal Vessel, Firelord Azulon finds himself fascinated by a rather intriguing speciman.
Excerpt:
“My, aren’t you a pretty little thing.”
The sound of the Firelord’s voice runs shivers down Pakku’s spine; like a hiss brushing against his ears. Though, he tries not to tremble as he simply keeps his head down and eyes closed.
He focuses on the weight of the chains on his wrists and ankles, trying to sense out any moisture in the air, in his skin— anything he can try to reach out. Anything to keep his mind off how exposed his midsection was, or how this foreign garb made his skin itch. Giving him rashes all over.

Tenzin's eyes wouldn't focus on the dull grays and blues surrounding him until he heard his sister's snarling voice.
"You think you're so tough, huh?"
There was the distinct sound of someone dramatically spitting, and then a low thud accompanied by a grunt, and the sound of a body hitting the ground. Tenzin's consciousness snapped back. It was time to fight. Chains rattled, stopping his bending in its tracks.
Not again.
"You fucking cowards!"
He looked down past his knees to see his sister struggling to sit upright. The curtains at the entrance of the igloo flapped as someone left. Harsh snowbright sun reflected into the room until the wind stopped dancing with the waxed material that made up the door. Kya growled and grumbled against the chains hobbling her. Tenzin pulled up on his wrists and felt the tug of metal around his waist and against his ankles.
Not again. Not again. Jinora needs me. My little girl needs me.
Tenzin swallowed once, twice. His throat was so dry. "Kya?"
Kya's head snapped back at her whispered name and her angry expression grew soft, but the fight didn't leave her eyes. "Hey. You okay?"
Tenzin nodded. He couldn't speak. There was a lump swelling in his throat threatening to burst. The shaking in his hands and arms made it difficult to sit upright.
The last coherent memory was the pain of electricity stabbing his flesh. Unforgiving metal snapped tight around his wrists and ankles. Someone pushed on his shoulder to make him stand from his slouched position. Amon's mask was so close he could see his own terrified reflection in the off-white porcelain. The pole behind him dug into his spine as he tried to escape the gloved hand that wrapped around his throat. Deep laughter mixed with the ringing in his ears.
Somehow Kya managed to shift over and help him to his knees. The fury in her eyes was replaced with a protective concern. It was the kind of look that usually pissed him off and made him cite that he was a grown man and that he didn't need his sister standing up for him anymore, but in this moment he could feel his mind slipping deeper and deeper into memories that still kept him up at night.
"Everything's fine. Korra's right here, and Bumi must be out there somewhere."
A moment passed before he could even process the words, then he slowly turned his head. There laid Korra, unceremoniously deposited face-down by her father. Tonraq sat unconscious, beaten and bruised, sat up against a structural support pole in the center of their enclosure. Bumi was nowhere to be found. Tenzin stared at Tonraq's abused features and then at Korra. He couldn't let this happen again. They didn't belong in chains. Insane men needed to leave them alone.
The children were sniffling and screaming for their mother. Amon's thumb pressed against the arrow point on his forehead.
Metal pinched his wrists and ankles when he started to try to break out of the restraints. A tightness formed in his chest. Sweat coated his face.
"Tenzin…"
Escape. Fight. Find Pema and the baby. Run.
"Tenz…"
Maybe blood will make a good lubricant. This edge is sharp. Cut through the sleeve. Cut through the skin.
"Tenzin!"
Tenzin's head snapped up to look at his sister's worried face.
Kya's fingertips brushed the backs of his hands. "Breathe."
Tenzin sucked air into his burning lungs and tears fell as soon as he exhaled.
"I can't—" Another harsh breath. His voice came pinched, strained.
Pressure built in his head, behind his eyes. Something wrapped around his throat— and invisible vice, the ghostly memory of a hand. Chains rattled taught when he tried to lift his hands to see if there was anything touching his neck, but he couldn't reach.
"What's wrong?"
Thick, worn-down leather, sickeningly soft on his skin as the edges of his vision turned black.
Tenzin shook his head, trying to dislodge the memory. "Nothing."
Worse than the terrified screams of his family was them slowly fading away to nothing— replaced with the sound of his pounding, rapid heartbeat in his eardrums.
"Tenzin. That fight is over."
"I can't do this again." Tenzin was surprised he could speak, considering he could have sworn someone was trying to strangle him. He started panting, sucking in short breaths that did nothing but make him lightheaded.
"Hey, look at me," Kya demanded.
Tenzin tried to blink the tears away so he could see her. She smiled that soft smile healers reserved for dying children and those with mental decline. He wondered what she saw in him. A scared child, or an old man losing his mind.
"Good. Pay attention to me." Her fingers curled under his as best as she could manage. Tenzin held her back with all the slack their chains would allow, a small crux of pressure was created between Kya's steady fingertips and Tenzin's shaking ones. "We're gonna get out of here. We're going to save Jinora. Stay with me so we can help everyone."
"But—" Tenzin's breaths came labored and shallow. He glanced around the tent trying to find the looming threat to their safety and closed his eyes tight when there was nothing lurking in the shadows. He pulled on Kya's fingertips as hard as he could, unable to tell if he was trying to keep her from slipping away, or himself. "Promise?"
"I promise."
Kya shifted awkwardly until the side of her body was flush against his. In the new position she was able to properly hold his hand. She rested her head on his shoulder and Tenzin doubled down on his efforts to breathe so that she wouldn't feel him shaking. The weight of her head on him and the warmth of her furs helped pull his thoughts out of the past and into the present.
"Thank you," he finally managed after a few minutes and rested his cheek on the side of her head.
Kya gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "I've got you. Just stay with me."

I’ve actually had many Korpal fics in my drafts, so actually forcing myself to post this was very fun. I love writing them, even if I don’t think I have Korra fully down as a character yet
