I like writing, fanfic, and a variety of fictional lesbians, not really in that order. I have strong opinions on programming because I was a programmer in a past life. I have strong opinions about Japanese and adult language acquisition because I learned Japanese as an adult. I have strong opinions about fanfic because I have spent a truly ungodly amount of hours both reading and writing it.

This blog is for reblogging everything I like enough I want to theoretically keep in an archive, but like, I don't actually use any tags with any coherency (aside from #nsfw?), so it's actually really bad at actually doing that, making it mostly just a way for me to afflict my friends with the various things I like.

Rocky on the trip back to Erid registering that Grace has defaulted to using he/him for him for sexism reasons and that they don't actually have to go by he/him. xe does some research on the human computer and spends several weeks cycling through different pronoun sets. starts switching so frequently Grace becomes convinced sie has started being difficult on purpose. after a while Grace is like omg will you just pick one and stick with it. The thing about Power Scaling is that IS a form of media analysis.

The ideal form of a power scaling debate is that you take as much evidence as possible from the presented mediums and try to find a pattern/level from examining that story/characters that compares another medium in the debate.

But as with all forms of media analysis, there the disingenuous and the egregious.

The former tends to fall under what most would call the "Blue Curtains" type of commenter: "The drapes are blue because the author likes blue hueueueue" tier arguments

So when you get people wanting to partake in Goku vs Superman, you get the people who are "clever" and go, "Silly powerscaler, don't you know they'd be friends! And that whoever wins is who the author wants!"

However, that literally does not actually engage with the question at all. And for the second half, we aren't talking about who the author would let win, we are asking "Based on the media analysis available, can we determine who could win based on the evidence presented?"

It's a thought-provoking exercise and should be treated as such.

On the other hand, the egregious. The type of power scaler that you'll see engaged with dishonesty for "agenda" and misunderstanding that "strong = better written".

Its the same sort of mindset that leads to some readers thinking that just because a medium has a lot to say, that inherently makes it good, rather than the quality of HOW it expresses itself.

And also leads to weirdoes harassing creators to fulfill their "agenda", such as the case where a God of War writer being asked multiple times online if Kratos was a "4D meta paracausal entity" (paraphrased on my end), only to be met with confusion by the writer, because that terminology is isolated to a niche part of the community

And is really cringe.

Also, power scaling does not only apply to debates, but also serve as commentary on the medium itself

If you have Ace Super Spy - who can bench press 350lbs and knows 250 martial arts styles AND can scan any room for threats - lose to Bruce the mildly fit barkeep, there’s going to be some sense of incongruity in terms of suspense of disbelief and stakes

Especially if you’ve had Ace defeat like, super soldiers who can bend steel or something

The Invincible TV show is probably the hot topic of the day when it comes into this, but the biggest offender that comes to mind is Dragon Ball Super.

You get Goku being so strong that planet destroying foes are seen as bugs, but a single bullet pains him

It’s all about consistency

I'd argue the more egregious exemple in Dragon Ball Super are some characters getting random power-ups because the writer wants them in the current arc, after years of being effectively side-lined due to the power scaling leaving them in the dust. See : Friezer doing like 10 push ups and suddently hes on par with Super Saiyan Blue, Android 17 randomly being able to spar with Goku in the tournament arc after getting Worf Effect'd all the way back in the Cell Saga by first form Cell of all people.

To me this shows that the main problem with medias like this is that every fight becomes an effective stat check. Previous established abilities will be entirely ignored or no-sold, because the opponent is "stronger" in a nebulous sense that isn't made all that clear to the viewer, but is clear in the writer's head. And that means that beloved characters fall to the wayside because they were already used to establish a bad guy as being way above anyone's league like 3 arcs ago, and theres no way they can catch up in the meantime without stretching suspension of disbelief. Your main character, by comparison , can grow so absurdly strong that you struggle to come up with much of anything that could realistically challenge them. And now youre stuck, and it leads to the wonky powerscaling you talked about, where you stil have to write stuff so what do you do now?

Its not necessarely a problem of consistency so much as a problem of planning IMO.

A well thought out story would account for the consistency of what characters can and cannot do, unless breaking that mold is part of the story itself

There’s untapped potential in fanart of Victoria unintentionally rage baiting Tattletale by just being a kind and considerate friend like she is by the end of the book.

I’m imagining a selfie submitted to the PHO wiki and the caption like, “Victoria and her best friend, the former villain known as Tattletale”

But it’s a picture of Victoria smiling happily at the camera, arm wrapped around Tattletale shoulders, while Tattletale is like… trying to bite her arm off
