Queer unity has been trying as hard as possible to downplay any possible transfem issue. Pay gap adding up to thousands a year? Not a big deal. V coding? Never mention it. Trans women are much more likely to be sent to an early grave than their male counterparts? Stop bringing that up. Trans people collaborating with kiwifarms? Just internet drama.

You know what IS an important issue? Getting called a fucking birthday boy. They get all hands on deck about it. They will write VERY long posts about how important it is you not use it, and that anyone who does must be punished as severely as possible

There's only one explanation. The lives of trans women are so worthless to them, so fucking disposable, that a trans man getting invalidated is actually more important to them. That's how these people, who demand we view them as family and allies, who think we should be ready to die for them, view us.

some people seem to think aotearoa new zealand is just fields and hills and grass. maybe some mountains. maybe a fjord or two. which is so fascinating to me because we have so many different biomes and landscapes it's bonkers.

I love you aotearoa. this isn't even all of it these are just a few examples man

unfortunately one of the main reasons people think we only have mountains and fields and european trees is because of the LOTR movies. smiles. those movies are fun but the reason they were filmed here is because a lot of aotearoa's native landscapes were destroyed and replaced with idyllic european landscapes 150 years ago. which made it the perfect place for a european fantasy film series. so yes there are hobbits! but at what cost!

To add onto this, back in the late 19th and early 20th century the primary goal of the colonists was to create an idyllic paradise, or an image of an imagined pre-Industrial Britain. They saw Aotearoa as a prime candidate for this project, and art that highlighted Aotearoa's natural beauty was very popular. Paintings such as the one below were used to help New Zealand's tourism industry and get Europeans to visit or migrate over here.

Tolkien lived during this time in British history, and Lord of the Rings is written with this same nostalgia for English pastoralism. The Shire is an idealized version of pre-industrial England, and many of the themes of Lord of the Rings are rooted in this early 1900s nostalgia for a pre-industrial society. So the fact that Peter Jackson's films merge these two elements is unsurprising. Compare the above painting of the Aotearoa with the following painting of Edoras, and then the film version of it.

They're all very similar in style. Now, was Peter Jackson being nefarious with this? No, I don't think so. But he is filming an adaptation of a book rooted in nostalgia for a pre-industrial Britain in a country where that very same nostalgia was used as a carrot to get British people across the world and help terraform Aotearoa into the very same image that allowed it to be the perfect setting for the films. Settlers who displace and disempower the Māori in the process of this project.

the thing is like. if you see someone complaining about “tmes”. like as in everyone who is described by the term tme (transmisogyny exempt). and the place your mind immediately jumps to is “this person is criticizing an entire demographic of queer people!!” then well. idk. that says to me that, at best, you still just don’t get what tme/tma exist to refer to. that you haven’t been listening to transfeminists when they talk about this. tme is just simply not a descriptor of any one particular queer identity. tme is not a descriptor of any queer identity at all. I can’t emphasize this enough. in fact, the vast majority of people who could accurately be described as tme aren’t even queer. it’s just like really telling to me when people try to turn discussion of transmisogyny into a matter of “queer infighting”. i get that that’s, like, the easiest route to take to try to make transfeminists look divisive and unreasonable. but that, you know, sucks. and it’s wildly intellectually dishonest. these are terms that exist to describe axes of power and oppression.
