āKataang is one-sidedā
Just a reminder that Katara initiated all of these kataang moments:
since michael b jordan's nasty ass went on an imperialist run and stole a very important part of trinbagonian culture, here's a thread educating you on what's going on and the TRUE meaning/history of j'ouvert š¹š¹
if you dont know what's going on michael b jordan "created" a rum brand along with a co founder* with "trini roots" which btw isn't even being produced on either of our islands but manufactured in the US by bacardi
rum itself is WEST INDIAN** (the preferred term for caribbean people but imma get into that later). so the fact that these people making rum after all the years of calling our people rumheads and steotyping us as rum-loving caricatures living in huts and living off coconuts and bananas just doh sit right with me
in addition to this he named it "j'ouvert" and trademarked the word...how fucking disrespectful can you be to practically spit on our ancestors graves by stealing an important part of our culture like this?? FOR A RUM?
j'ouvert is the creole stylized version of the french term "jour ouvert" or day break/open. it originated during canboulay, which was when sugar cane fields were lit aflame and our enslaved african ancestors were forced to harvest the cane amidst the fire
(side note: he's giving out sugar cubes in his lil pr packages š might as well call us cane cutting blackies)
this, like every aspect of chattel slavery was insanely inhumane and of course the white slave "masters" would reenact this to mock slaves and laugh at our dehumanisation and pain, primarily enslaved men.
after our emancipation, however, these reenactments became a way for us to celebrate and in turn mock the vile oppressors my mimicking the way they viewed us, hence j'ouvert was born. it's a form of storytelling which has survived generations and is extremely important to us
modern day j'ouvert may look fun to you because of all the music and mud and paint but if you knew anything about the vitality of trinbagonian people or west indian people it's that through all we been through we celebrate our past and ancestors with jubilation
we're happy people despite it all. just because a festival or aspect of our culture looks fun and inviting does NOT mean it's yours to take. everything here has a dark past but we make due in honour of those who came before us. respect it and leave it alone
his justification for trademarking the word? he claims it has no real meaning....now tell me after this entire thread on it's history, how tf can a person say THIS has no real meaning? how evil can you be
do NOT call us no fucking "caribbeans" because you're basically calling us cannibals. don't use that colonizer term, we've reclaimed W.I. address
ending this with pictures from j'ouvert celebrationsš¹š¹ j'ouvert is sacred, let's keep it that way
The book is 1984, which is neither. It's anti-authoritarian, which tells you a lot.
Ya know, sometimes I wish the joke *didnāt* write itself.

Iām gonna take a moment to talk about the greenhouse link above. Greenhouses can be quite a bit of work, time, and money to build - and they take up space - so some thoughtful planning and research can ensure that whatever you build youāll get the most out of.Ā
Most people, when first approaching greenhouses, just build a generic shed that has clear walls and a roof. Thatās what you see in the blog post above, while the author kept mentioning how incredibly hot it is. The author is located in central Washington state, USA.
Greenhouse with no ventilation/cooling or heating or electricity or gas, in a hot climate summer climate, cool winter. While conventionally attractive, it is not particularly functional, and is only useful for a relatively short period of the year.
How best to design a greenhouse can depend on factors like climate and latitude.Ā
If your greenhouse is located someplace very cold, youāre looking at issues with heating it, or else not using it at all during that time. Thereās multiple ways to heat greenhouses, traditionally methane or propane gas, although in emergencies, and if it is wired for electricity, electrical heat may be used. Some people have even used wood furnaces (this is less than ideal) For any place with long winters this quickly becomes very expensive. Thermal mass is the clever trick to solve most, if not all, (depending on climate) heating issues in winter - no fossil fuels or deforestation required.
If your greenhouse is located someplace very hot, youāre looking at issues with cooling it, or else not using it all during that time. Thereās multiple ways to cool greenhouses - fans/vents and shade cloth being the most common. Thermal mass can also help with this issue too.Ā Ā
My favorite website on greenhouses (which longtime readers may recognize) is Penn and Cord. Heating and cooling greenhouses so you can use them for more than 6 weeks a year can be very expensive and very energy intensive - unless you start looking at passive solar greenhouse designs, such as those by Penn and Cord. You do sacrifice some space in the back greenhouse for the thermal mass aka giant barrels of water.
Can be built out of used or scrap material.
Above, barrels are on the left, hidden behind the plants. Below, this is what the wall of barrels looks like before plant beds are installed.
These 55 gallon drums filled with water and painted black, all along the north wall, are theĀ ābatteryā that keeps these greenhouses usable year round. The roof angles are designed so that these receive direct sunlight (hence why they are painted black) in the winter, the sun heats the water, and they help keep the greenhouse warm all winter long. Theyāre working at high elevations in Colorado which means 1) wild temperature fluctuations 2) itās pretty cold in winter there, down to -30F/-34C. The barrels also modulate the hot temperatures in summer. There are variations around this idea, but hopefully the concept makes sense. Sometimes people will create the northern wall out of concrete, and then put the barrels or bottles of water in front of it, for a similarĀ ābatteryā or modulating effect. The interiors are painted bright white, to reflect as much light as possible to the plants.
Granted, this extremely energy efficient and far more sustainable greenhouse style does not have the sameĀ āaestheticā, but the space is actually far more usable. Penn and Cord and their crew are growing 365 days of the year, in greenhouses mostly made out of used materials. None of these greenhouses obviously have electricity or gas installed, but they donāt actuallyĀ need it either, thanks to their clever and regionally-appropriate design.
Okay I am 100% behind people building up their ability to survive and growing their skill set. 2 things though.
1. Modern subsistence movements need to be aware of and careful about not creating laws which may inhibit the subsistence practices of the poor. https://www.google.com/amp/s/grist.org/food/are-trendy-homesteaders-clueless-about-class-differences/amp/
Gardening and sewing clothes arenāt just activities for hipsters. Theyāve long been practiced by the poor.
2. Homesteading as a term is a means of claiming land with āno ownerā by working it and making it yours. Unfortunately, at the time of homesteading laws in the USA the land did have an owner, the indigenous people who were then forced off their land and out of the places theyād likely inhabited for millennia to make room for more homesteaders. Not to mention that despite their new freedoms black people were not given land as easily as their white counterparts.
Consequently, the term āhomesteadingā has myriads of negative connotations not the least of which is racism. For this reason I propose those choosing to re-embrace this way of living use terms like subsistence farmer, self sufficiency, or slow living.

How can anyone still have these tired notions about Aang? Being an abuser? Not understanding pain?
See, this just breaks my heart. Aang goes through various low periods in the show, but one episode that might best illustrate how much grief he's carrying is The Awakening (S3, E1). Aang is so distraught over the idea of the world thinking he's dead, and the thing is that he's dealing with the memory of waking up in the iceberg and learning that everything and everyone he knew is gone.
In The Awakening, he relives that fear. He's alive, but imagine... Once again the world thinks he's gone. Once again he feels like he's failed. Once again, Aang is left to wonder what evil might happen if the Fire Nation thinks he's gone. He carries so much guilt, shame and regret for not being there for his people and for the world.
In The Storm (S1, E 12), we learn why Aang disappeared--he ran away. We learn that he was scared about being taken away from Gyatso and his life because he's the Avatar. This is something he carries with him. At the end of The Storm, Aang chooses to face any and all challenges head on, determined to do what he can in the present. He can't change the past, but he chooses the future. Again, allow me to point out some critical growth: Aang chooses never to run away again.
So fast forward to season 3, and he feels like he's running away all over again. He's so angry in The Awakening that he impulsively flies off into the storm to (probably) alert the world to the fact that he's still alive, and gods help anyone doing harm in his supposed absence. But he's stopped, and Yue comforts him/saves him by carrying him to safety on the tides.
Meanwhile, Aang is dealing with this mostly on his own. Not because he doesn't trust the others, but because he probably feels that it's his own burden to bear. He's likely applying the teachings of his people to let go of negative emotions and move forward. He chooses now. He chooses the future. Again and again. Aang chooses to do what he can to help. He grows so much.
And an abuser? Oh lord help me. Aang respects differences of opinion all the time (he never tries to convert anyone to vegetarianism, he never blames Zuko for what happened to his people, he never does anything underhanded to stop Katara in the Southern Raiders). On the last note: in The Southern Raiders episode, Aang lets Katara go with Zuko. He doesn't raise his voice or get angry. He gets worried. He's sad. Because he understands Katara's pain better than anyone, and he knows how angry she is. He understands why she'd want revenge. You know why?
Because at one point, Aang at least thought he wanted those things too.
When he goes into the Avatar state for the first time after finding Gyatso's body, that was pure, unadulterated anger and grief. It was raw power that consumed him. Imagine what might have been going through his head? He was losing himself to grief, and I'd bet everything I have on the idea that he was probably thinking about revenge right then. It's only because Katara tells him they're his new family that he calms.
And he never does this again.
Aang deals with his feelings so in the moment that we don't see this long drawn out tug-of-war the same way we see with Zuko or even Katara. But Aang's been there. That's why he can be a friend to everyone in the Gaang--because he can empathize, and he knows that being a person is hard. He knows what toll the war has taken on everyone.
The only time we see Aang being unquestionably difficult is after losing Appa. He blames Toph, he's generally snappy with Katara, and he shows little care for Sokka's cactus juice antics. And this really underscores how Aang's attachment to the last shreds of his old life is still so strong. Appa is all he has left, and he has no time to process that he's been taken. Again, he wasn't there. So you get this moment when he's probably taking out his anger with himself on everyone around him. Because every bad thing that happens to the people Aang loves happens when he's not there to help.
And then? You can guess where this is going. Again we see him come to the end of the arc (at the end of The Serpent's Pass, S2, E12), we see Aang come to the conclusion that he has to let himself feel again. He's moved by the birth of a child who lived thanks to the efforts he and his friends made to keep the couple safe. He's constantly reminded of the present. He's constantly choosing to do better. He learns from his mistakes and he grows.
Aang is a complex character with so much depth. He's so endlessly kind and understanding, but it doesn't come from the word go. He makes mistakes. But he always gets back up. He always chooses to look forward after he understands what he could've done better.
I think the reason Aang doesn't get his due from a lot of fans is that he's a kid. Audiences have been primed to like the edgier, grittier protagonist (an archetype Zuko fits into. I like Zuko, so don't think I'm bashing him at all). But Aang is younger and part of his personality is that he's a goofball. Plus, we see him grow up throughout the seasons.
I guarantee you that if Aang had been 16 like the rest of boys, he wouldn't be bashed as often as he is. It's unfortunate.
Remember that this show was for kids his age (and at a range 11-16). Aang's personality and journey are relatable to anyone, but especially a young kid. Aang was written to give viewers a role model--he shows kindness, wisdom, fun-loving, silliness and boyhood.
Aang isn't immature. Aang isn't an abuser. Aang isn't a flat undeveloped character.
Aang is a hero.
Because he chooses to be one despite everything he's lost and everything he's up against. He chooses growth.
Beautiful.
But, gentle reminder:
āHe was losing himself to grief, and I'd bet everything I have on the idea that he was probably thinking about revenge right then. It's only because Katara tells him they're his new family that he calms.
And he never does this again.ā
This most certainly happened dramatically when he merged with La in the first season finale in anger and grief at the idea of a whole culture being demolished.
(and likely he was also thinking of how Kataraās people were decimated, even though itās not stated outright)
And this action messed him up so badly that he had nightmares afterwards.
This is the kid that should be obligated to murder someone in cold blood?
You want a child soldier, fandom?
You know thatās against the Geneva Conventions, right?
(in a realistic scenario the way the spirit slung ships around would also result in peoples deaths, see here:)

This story is so refreshing and sweet. Itās called Koi Monogataries. No NSFW content. We follow the life of a gay teenager who deal with his sexuality, but the atmosphere is rather bright with scene such as the one above.

Iām probably beating a dead horse but fuck it, to this day, Fullmetal Alchemist still has the best cast of female characters Iāve ever seen in the shounen genre, period. In the years since its release, nothing has come anywhere close to the gold standard FMA set because either the girls are plot devices in disguise, fan service, or just flat out boring. And okay, maybe a good shounen will have 1-2 well written female characters while the rest are hot garbage but with FMA, every single female character hits and is nuanced, multi dimensional, just all the good stuff.
Marriage is good and weddings are great but I hate modern wedding culture. You donāt need to bankrupt yourself to have a nice wedding. Stop supporting the wedding industry, stop buying outrageously priced engagement rings, stop spending 10k on a dress youāll only ever wear once.
Coming from a professional event planner - weddings are egregiously expensiveĀ because companies openly raise prices at the wordĀ āwedding.āĀ
Pro Tip - Never drop the word wedding while planning if you donāt need to. Most things can be forĀ āan event youāre planning.ā This obviously doesnāt include things like the venue, DJ (who needs specific wedding songs),Ā and the wedding dress company if youāre going that route versus just buying a dress.
For my wedding I gotĀ ādiscountedā cupcakes, flowers, decor, bridesmaids dresses, groomsman attire, and invitations. I did thisĀ by either searching for things that arenāt marketed for weddings or not telling the companies I was working with it was for a wedding. Because honestly, most of the time they donāt need to know why youāre ordering.
These companies target people planning their weddings andĀ markup everything the secondĀ āweddingā is said. And itās said often because people assume the services change exponentially for weddings. They absolutely do not.Ā
The best example areĀ the cupcakes I had for myĀ wedding. I used a designer cupcake store in town instead of spending $1000 on a wedding cake.Ā If you place a large order of cupcakes with a cake tree for display - it costs about $150 for 100 (which is what I did). When you order theirĀ āweddingā package - the price raised to aĀ $700 base for 100 cupcakes. The only other perk includes aĀ ātasting.ā Forget that. Our tasting was buying a few cupcakes in flavors we thought weād like and picked three. It cost maybe $20.Ā
What these companies do isĀ scummy and targets people who donāt have information about the event industry.
I will yell it from the rooftops until people realize thereās a better way.
