The core conceit of Lord of the Rings is pretty funny. You are a twenty three year old in a suburb of Maine. The little bracelet in your grandpa’s attic has an inscription on it that is the password to the world’s entire nuclear arsenal. It is up to you to walk to the only hydraulic press in the world, located in Arizona, before the FBI finds the bracelet, kills you, and enslaves the suburb of Maine you currently live in
Also the 90-year old hobo that your grandpa beat in a rap battle for possession of the bracelet while hiding from the Romanian secret police really loved the bracelet because it was coated in small amounts of LSD and tried to hunt and kill your grandpa to get it back. He was then apprehended by the FBI and instantly gave them your grandpa’s address. Seal Team Six is about to break down your door and shoot you, says your local congressman who can also do cool magic tricks
There's a guy in NY who MIGHT be capable of destroying the codes but won't coz he simply wants to spend time with his wife. So it's up to your grandpa's old friend in rural Ohio to get you the friends capable of finishing the task.
And we must not, at any point, remember the existence of aircraft and ask aloud why we can't just fly to Arizona

The children's show villain is a figure who sadly is not seen outside the children's show. There are few stock characters who as succinctly declare, from sheer stage presence, "the world is unloveable and it is painful to live here; that which delights mankind is like ash on my tongue" without being too fucking whiny about it.
maladaptive suicidal ideation: "i'm going to kill myself"
productive, growth mindset: "i'm going to steal all the instruments from Musictown!"
Places where reality is a bit altered:
playgrounds at night
rest stops on highways
deep in the mountains
early in the morning wherever it’s just snowed
trails by the highway just out of earshot of traffic
schools during breaks
those little beaches right next to ferry docks
bowling alleys
unfamiliar mcdonalds on long roadtrips
your friends living room once everybody but you is asleep
laundromats at midnight
• any target • churches in texas • abandoned 7/11’s • your bedroom at 5 am • hospitals at midnight • warehouses that smell like dust • lighthouses with lights that don’t work anymore • empty parking lots • ponds and lakes in suburban neighborhoods • rooftops in the early morning • inside a dark cabinet
galeries in art museums that are empty except for you
the lighting section of home depot
stairwells
•hospital waiting rooms •airports from midnight to 7am • bathrooms in small concert venues
I just got the weirdest feeling I swear
OK LISTEN THERE ARE REASONS FOR THIS!!!
A lot of these places are called liminal spaces - which means they are throughways from one space to the next. Places like rest stops, stairwells, trains, parking lots, waiting rooms, airports feel weird when you’re in them because their existence is not about themselves, but the things before and after them. They have no definitive place outside of their relationship to the spaces you are coming from and going to. Reality feels altered here because we’re not really supposed to be in them for a long time for think about them as their own entities, and when we do they seem odd and out of place.
The other spaces feel weird because our brains are hard-wired for context - we like things to belong to a certain place and time and when we experience those things outside of the context our brains have developed for them, our brains are like NOPE SHIT THIS ISN’T RIGHT GET OUT ABORT ABORT. Schools not in session, empty museums, being awake when other people are asleep - all these things and spaces feel weird because our brain is like “I already have a context for this space and this is not it so it must be dangerous.” Our rational understanding can sometimes override that immediate “danger” impulse but we’re still left with a feeling of wariness and unease.
Listen I am very passionate about liminal spaces they are fascinating stuff or perhaps I am merely a nerd.
I, for one, appreciate your passion for liminal spaces and thank you for explaining it to the rest of us.
I get the playgrounds at night because I walk to one that’s near my house at night sometimes and hang out. I always feel like I’m being watched or followed, or rather something out of the ordinary is happening

The most PATHETIC lil baby sounds...
I love when little creatures who are entirely loved and well cared for have the BIGGEST baby reactions to normal things. Like yes sweet pea, you DO have the hardest life of anyone ever, for sure, and you’re SO BRAVE about this minor inconvenience of *checks notes* having some water touch you
There is nothing sadder and more pathetic than a baby marine mammal having to get into the water. They are suffering the most out of any baby animal ever. How dare they be introduced to their natural environment.
"I don't want you doing that, please. No, let's not. Let's no-I SAID STOP FUCKING TOUCHING ME, STEPHANIE."
"here's my original character, Man Who Sucks But Loves His Daughter Very Much" and it's a guy who worships at the altar of patriarchal violence and the woman he uses as an excuse and an effigy to absolve him
well i think his daughter should tell him to kill himself
im fucking crying

godtiers are so frustrating because i find them a legitimately useful and fundamental tool of how i make characters but they're made entirely out of vibeposting and explaining them to a non-homestuck makes you sound delusional. your character reminds me of pajamas
i tried showing the official aspects to a non-homestuck friend and asked them to pick the one they felt worked with their character, and the choice they made felt so wrong (for their character) (the one that they made) that i became overwhelmingly and irrationally irate. and when they ask why i cannot explain it
See what you do is don't even lead with the pajamas. You'll know in your heart the pajamas are there. You can explain almost anything to a non-homestuck if you twist it till it sounds completely normal. Hell, convince them its a standard "literary technique" if you have to. "Would you say your character is more focused on the people around them or more preoccupied with their own inner world" is a normal ass sentence for normal people but you're already thinking of the color of the pajamas and so am I and we're right to do so.
but, but, jr!! jr, you have uncovered a dangerous trap!!!! one made by the very devils at work!!!!!
a godtier aspect isn't just a series of personality traits. i don't care what the extended aspects say and for this i deserve my karmic punishment. a godtier aspect tints the very mechanic of the powers you have access to, the stuff that happens to you, and the axis that your character teeters upon.
when i say something like 'your character is doom-aligned', i'm not just saying whatever the extended canon says the series of doom player traits are. i'm dictating the entire course of your story, which is what SBURB actually does with that information! it makes you a story!! its primary function is generating mythology!!!
classpects are unlike any pop culture box sorting system in that they are primarily used to describe a trayectory, a line of motion-- past, present, and future. the issue is then you have to explain character trayectory to someone, but all the official homestuck material on it as of today is, again, just myers-briggs.
whuch ends up causing the issue. your character isn't just 'doom aligned' because you're 'good at comforting people'. your character is doom aligned because the shadow of laws and death chases you around like a dog. i am then forced to explain all of this like how one might [backrooms voice] explain a dog to someone who hasn't seen one
We are definitely in agreement here, lol I love the narrative interpretation of classpects.
What is your role in the story, what is your arc. Its all so delicious to me.
I still say you can explain it without trying to explain pajamas. At least some of it seems to be getting through in my branch of Zampanio.
Maybe. Hopefully.
I think more than homestuck it gets even harder because a lot of the narrative stuff I think came from replay value au? Maybe? Hard to remember...
