Thanks to Azula in the Spirit Temple NOBODY can seriously, in good faith and convincingly argue that she's an irredeemable psychopath.
The evidence of her humanity is plain for anyone to see, the case is blunt, open and shut.
How long it will take for her happy ending is another matter but something tells me it's just a matter of time.
5'4 18 year old Azula looking up at 6'4 16 year old Aang lmao
Azula: "I hereby decree you are not allowed to get any taller! How are you only 16 and 6'4!"
Aang: "How are you 18 and looking shorter is the better question!"
It’s interesting to think about what difference a canon azulaang would make in legend of korra.
1. Korra gaining Azula as a firebending teacher is the equivalent of typing /killall everytime somebody acts up
2. Book 3 wouldn’t be much of an issue. Since the red lotus tried to oppose azulas boyfriend, i dont think there is much red lotus left anymore.
3. Katara might have had enough understanding of the importance of bringing the air nomads back that she let aang have free reign, but azula would slap the shit out of him for an ounce of favoritism. Bumi, Ursa (formerly kya) and tenzin would be the ultimate trio.
I find the idea of azula getting a found family ark very interesting. Like ursa, zuko, and the gaang are looking for azula and they meet the found family, who are also looking for azula. Azula is off doing something dangerous for one reason or another (maybe its a job to deal with something or someone)
And the FF mom tells the person who assigned azula that job "You sent MY daughter to do (x-activity)!?" and the chaos issues
Oh, definitely, Azula getting a protective FF mom is something I would like to see:) I remember once reading a fanfic with a similar premise. Azula found a woman who became like a mom to her, but then Zuko, the gaang and Ursa showed up, Ursa wanted to make amends with Azula and she basically started fighting for Azula's attention with the FF mom😂
Actually, I think the idea of Azula getting FF can not only make for an interesting story, but it also has great comedic potential.
ATLA - Bring it
Azula: Be warned. If you marry my brother, you'll be at the center of so much backlash from my people.
Katara: What did you do when you were warned that you'd have backlash for marrying Aang?
Azula: I said, "bring it."
Katara: Then you should be glad to know that I'm saying the exact same thing. Bring it.
Azula: That's the spirit, dear sister.
Katara: Wouldn't be the first time I challenged the norms of a nation.
Okay. So if I were to ever write Zutara, Azulaang or Tokka fics...I would 100% throw LoK Canon out the window completely.
NOT because I do not have a fondness for LoK, I very much do. And anything Kataang I did would 100% use what LoK has given us. But I have lurked enough to know I really don't love these three ships when an attempt is made to like. Fit them into that framework? Something about it being done that way just doesn't scratch the itch when it comes to how I see these ships.
Tokka I think is the best example. I avoid tokka sadly because a lot of fandom goes along with fitting it into canon with Lin and Su, and with Kanto. As well as all the inherent angst that comes with it.
And let me be clear: this is GREAT. Do not take this as me knocking when fans do this. The creative ways fans take things between the lines and make them work is so awesome. The way it turns out in fanworks just does not tend to be what I enjoy.
And I would love to come up with my own post-canon story for these ships, too. But that is almost a problem all it's own cause that would be WHOLE lot of writing.
“B-but! Azula isn’t shippable! She’s crazy and incapable of love!”
As if all the evidence in the show and comics wasn’t enough, here’s some storyboard panels Bryke showed at a con once.
Yes. That is Azula x Haru.
Source:
Do you want Azula to have kids of her own?
Yes
No
the comics have a lot of bad things but i think this is not one of them.
Thinking up fun AU's > Actually taking the time and using the effort to write them
About the last panels of Azula in the Spirit Temple, do you think Azula concluded that her former team abandoned her to focus on one of their own that was missing and that is why she decided to look for new followers? Do you also think the narrative is trying to force the readers with the idea that Azula will always be alone no matter how many followers she finds?
To me it felt like Azula's experience in the spirit temple made her think about how she treats people, and that it is indeed a flaw that she needs to work on, and that was why she decided to leave them alone in the end. Even though she never outright states this as being the reason as to why, that's just how I interpreted it. As far as the narrative goes, it's hard to say. The writers have always been wishy washy when it comes to how her character in particular has been handled in the comics, so who knows.
Serious question: Why is it that so many people assume that Azula must give up her ambition in order to heal or evolve?
Why is Azula's ambition deemed a corrupting influence while male characters are allowed to have big dreams and go after them?
In a way she should. her ambition stems from the imperialism she was taught and her desire to be loved by her family (read; be seen as useful). Those are things she should unlearn to heal as a whole because they're unhealthy and bad.
I don't however think she should give up her ambition and drive as a whole and the idea that she should while not expecting the same of men in Avatar is a double standard
Me: Azula kinda got screwed over. Here's why
Randos like clockwork: she needed to be restrained, though, she was a danger to herself and others. I know asylums have a bad wrap, but they couldn't let her walk around. She had to go down. She did bad things and couldn't be trusted. There was no other obvious option. Zuko also had it bad too, and that's why it's all reasonable in the end
Oh my god. It's like not even a conversation with these people. They just want you to agree she was "crazy" and needed to go down, lmao
Okay. Gotta know.
Which Is The Truth-
Yes I multiship Kataang and Zutara or believe it's possible.
No. Never. Just one or the other.
Results please.
I think what makes me even sadder about Kataras live action portrayal is how I've yet to see many people talk about what is actually my issue with it. Like a LOT of people have said something is wrong and off, but it boils down most often with wanting her to be more angry. And that isn't inaccurate. She SHOULD have more of that rage. That IS a part they also completely erase.
But as far as anyone concerned any feminine side of Katara- that mothery, nurturing side she canonically DID have in the orignal- I've yet to see anyone really touch on how that is the core of the issue. The rage went just as quickly as that nurturing side when they decided Katara needed to be more warrior...and less of anything else. And that is putting it generously. Mind you, I have not looked for a whole mountain of opinions and maybe I am missing something. But it feels like everyone would be completely happy with this Katara if she was just more angry.
And as someone who ALWAYS has related to Katara far more for her nurturing and loving side, that really is a bummer. If we want to talk about representation, if we want to talk about making woman and girls see themselves in the characters they were watching, like it or not that facet of Katara did that for a lot of young girls and woman. At least, she did for me which is why Kataras characterization in the live action does sting so much for me personally.
And let me be clear again: This is not to say I'm saying that everyone is wrong about this and I'm right. It is 100% fact Katara loses out on so much not being as angry as she should be, and they messed up with not exploring that. I'm just pointing out it goes deeper for me. If you think I am wrong that's fine. Just getting these thoughts out.
Okay. With that off my chest and a rewatch under my belt I do promise to get on talking about the positives of the live action now XD.
you know what would really defeat ozai? both of the kids he abused having redemption arcs and finding a better path to walk than the one he tried to break them to
