breaking my silence. it is insane that a marriage is more celebrated than earning a degree.
Don't leave your friends and even acquaintances to go to the hospital alone. If they don't have someone already going with them and don't explicitly tell you they don't want you there, go to advocate for them. Outcomes for sick people change dramatically when they have someone else there to observe doctors (making them know they can't get away with negligence) and note symptoms from an outside perspective.
Going to the hospital is scary and even someone totally unprepared to be a medical advocate or physical support will be better than nothing, purely from their presence. You can grab food, be there with your phone to search if theirs dies, go in search of a doctor, distract them from pain or discomfort... go with them.
I keep thinking about the stargate sg1 team somehow finding themselves like 1000 years in the future on some planet they freed from the Gua'old.
They've been immortalised as heroes but its been so long they've fallen into legend. They're the King Arthur of this planet, said to return when they are needed most.
The sg1 characters have been bastardised beyond belief. Jack is an Odin figure. A wise leader but also a trickster. Sam is said to contain the knowledge of the universe. Teal'c is said to be able to lift mountains and, perhaps if his age came up originally, be as old as the universe. Daniel is said to be a kind a generous soul who can speak to all things, people, animals, rocks, everything.
Idk where I'm going with this but I just couldn't get the idea of SG1 becoming immortalised in myth and legend, their adventures told to children as bedtime stories.
And then they just kinda...appear haha
It's always "stop harming yourself or we'll have to lock you up!!!" and never "what do you need to change to want to harm yourself less and how can we help you make some of these changes?" and that's why we're not getting anywhere
um actually there's nothing wrong with letting cats be outdoor pets. your cat is depressed locked inside forever. it's animal abuse. let it outside. more cats should be let outside more often. especially overnight.
ive invented (note: dubious claim) something i call the bear diet which is mostly fruits and vegetables with fish as the main protein source and something like once a month you eat a few hyperprocessed foods of your liking because that is when you, the bear, raid a dumpster in the suburbs

in 2026 i am wishing for all of us the energy of bilbo baggins, who was headhunted for an extremely well paid role he had no qualifications or experience for, blagged the interview, and within his first week found a magic ring that does the job for him

Maybe this is an unpopular hot take, but I think a good monster girl design should struggle with day-to-day life in a human world. If your monster girl can live a normal human life where her greatest inconvenience is wet dog smell or people assuming her tail is fake, you need to mix more monster in your girl.
Harpies who can't write or type or open most containers with their wings. Werewolves who worry about hurting someone if they get overstimulated at the wrong time. Minotaurs with digestive systems and metabolisms which require grazing throughout the day, not the three big meals humans are used to.
Lamias who have to stay home in the evenings and during cold months to stay warm, otherwise their muscles stop working right and they get stranded. And they're sick of their human friends suggesting they get some kind of tail sweater. It wouldn't help, the problem is that their body doesn't produce enough heat to begin with, and anyways a tail garment would get in the way of their rectilinear locomotion, and there's no way a sweater would survive being walked on in the first place. It feels like they don't actually care about you being stuck at home whenever they go out, they just want to feel like it's not their fault they never see you.
If your monster girl can't be read as some kind of disability allegory, you're doing something wrong.
yes!
there's a lot of grievance i have over monster girl design philosophy/exploration and this is one of them. i feel like another grievance i have toward monster girl designs is that the human dimorphism far outweighs + undermines monster girl part. the monster part is an afterthought (girl with dog ears and tail AT BEST).
harpies can be explored greatly based on whatever bird they're designed off of. lammergier girls who break jars in their talons by dropping them from great height since they don't possess thumbs. werewolf girlies who are debilitated by the sound of the vacuum cleaner. or monster girls who can 'recognize' their partners and peers by smell, but not faces.
there is so much that can be done with proper exploration of monster girls and it aggravates me why this isn't done more.
FINALLY A POST I CAN INFO DUMP ON!!!
I have watched SO MANY monster girl anime's and they never get creative with the world!!! Everything is just so boring or just ignored! which ruins the point of having a bunch of unique creatures, and very few actually do something to an interesting degree!
Like, Centaurs are a much bigger creature then your average person, and they're going to weigh a lot more. Thus stairs and elevators have to be taken into account. Places need to be accessible for all races, Zootopia kind of does something like this, with the mice in transit tubes (not monster girl related but proof of certain races needing or having unique travel)
Mermaids live in water, you can have so much fun with the architecture and the only one where I've actually seen some semblance of world building is Monster girl doctor (which I don't really recommend personally, i find the writing.. lacking.) In MGD, mermaids live in a sort of Venice type place, where the waterways act as their roads, which is great! But outside of that, nothing much else is done.
Harpies are also a unique case with their lack of fingers and hands. I once saw a very interesting manga where the writer actually addressed this, with specifically desks. They made it to where Harpy chairs are angled into a V-esque shape, where harpies use their elevated talons to write. That's a fascinating and great idea on how to make them work! and one of the most clever ideas I've seen based on monster girls!
Both architecture and socially, monster girls can be played with in such a unique fashion, but sadly they're mostly used for pornographic reasons. Which is fine! I love a pretty lamia woman. However, I would also love a deep exploration on what it's like to be a monster girl in a world not adapted to you and slowly have it fixed, or being one in a world where everything is catered to everyone.
Another thing to keep in mind is technology. Phones and keyboards work for the average person, but again, someone thats a harpy, pawed or wet may have issues, thus technology must adapt in that way. Additionally, because of how varied like and society is, there may be more unique technology to take advantage of or improve certain things.
Additionally, and this is coming from a raging bisexual here, I WANT MONSTER BOYS TOO!! Stop making them ugly as fuck monsters, or not exist at all. (Bonus would also to embrace the diversity of actual humans and not just make them twinks/femboys) That could also lead to some very interesting stories! Like a male/trans-man calico cat. Being a male calico would likely have a lot of societal annoyances, peoples assumptions of gender. Or even a orange catgirl that has to deal with the stigma that orange cats are stupid.
In conclusion, monstergirls are such a fascinating topic and they're rarely explored outside of pure sex. I would love to see a city of harpies that have homes in the sky. Or have a city of mermaids on the coast of a beach, maybe even have their own water filled transit tubes so they can exist in the city. The possibilities with them are so vast!!
this has been weighing on me in terms of monster girl design grievances far before these posts were even conceived but listen a sec:
remember when i said i know why monster girls aren't explored further? when we do often get monster girls in popular media, especially horror, sexuality is a central theme. sexuality and how she weaponizes said sexuality against men. society fears and demonizes women with any flavor of autonomy, especially when it involves sex. hence the recurring angle of the monster girl when she's a villain.
even when she's not a villain, we have the appeal to men angle that follows often in monster girl design philosophy. you can have a dragon girl but with the caveat that the audience knows she's Indeed A Girl.
an approximation to men is a common denominator. and not just that, but society 'validates' women if they're deemed pretty.
girls and women aren't allowed the same spectrum of design philosophy as guys. they're not often allowed to be imposing or gross often (hence why i think designs like jenova or anima from final fantasies 7 and 10 when i was younger were pivotal to my eldritch tastes). women aren't allowed to exist in a way which challenges men. monster girls exist but they 'have' to be pretty. the other stuff comes later (if later ever comes). it's why we hardly get clever metaphors or explorations attached to monster girls.
part of the appeal of being into monster genres is that you have an interest in the grotesque. i personally love adolescent body horror metaphors as a metaphor for monster exploration. the fact that bodies are capable of that. the grotesqueness and overall endearing weirdness should be part of the fun, not an afterthought. we can have sexy monster girls. the issue comes when they permeate a vast part of people's design philosophies to a point where grotesque-ness is nonexistent.
that's where we lose much of the plot.
The main issue is that very often people add monster to a girl - instead of adding girl to a monster.
