It’s reverse, I think. All worker bees are females.

it gets a little crazier. Male bees (called drones) are ‘specially’ made by the queen from unfertilized eggs (haploid, half the chromosomes). Drones have no stingers and are pretty much just kept around to help the queen fertilize.

Eggs the queen decides to fertilize are born diploid female and become workers, and move through a complicated caste system within the colony over their lifetime, with jobs ranging from feeders, foragers, and defenders.

Sometimes too many males are produced, and they are selectively eliminated to tailor to the needs of the hive. So basically, bees only keep as many dudes around as they see fit.
