I do wonder if we're going to get all three groups back at the table at the same time this convergence. I'm sure there's a way to check if I dig through the convergence trailer but I'm feeling a bit lazy and it's more fun to theorize lmao.

Because I could see both Team Spy (at least Kattigan, and maybe Tyranny if she goes and saves him, unsure if Wick is getting out of Dol-Makjar any time soon) and Team Birdwatching needing to skip town pretty quickly (a la the soldiers table in the overture).

I do also wonder if we will see someone (Tyranny probably) from Team Spy stopping by the theater to get help rescuing Kattigan? Maybe Azune? Or they run into Vaelus & Hannan (I also just don't think Vaelus makes sense staying around in Dol-Makjar to do scheming). So swap out Wick (& probably also Bolaire) w/ Azune and Vaelus and you've got your grouping of Kattigan, Tyranny, Azune & Vaelus? Although I don't see Azune leaving Dol-Makjar. Maybe Murray? I don't see Hal or Thaisha leaving the theater mid-show. Though I do see Thaisha taking the summons from her grandmother as an excuse for Aabria to go on maternity leave.

I could also see Team Birdwatching using Mara as their escape strategy from Obrimus Manor (maybe with her ability to travel from Aramán to the Underworld? Or with other cool druid shit) and that maybe leading them somewhere outside of (or on the edges of) Dol-Makjar. Either in the Underworld/Tenebral Reaches (if Obrimus Manor doesn't just lead them there, and I feel like there's a good chance it will) or somewhere else in Aramán).

But also I think I've convinced myself that Teor is not making it out of this combat alive, and so that means we'd have a trio (+ Mara, and maybe Cyd if he's still alive) until we're introduced to Travis' new character? To be so honest I would love a Julien, Thimble, Occtis trio that does sound very exciting.

So basically, group predictions:

Team 1: Hal, maybe Thaisha, Wick, Bolaire, either Azune or Murray

Team 2: Kattigan, Tyranny, Vaelus (or she somehow finds her way into Team 3), either Azune or Murray

Team 3: Julien, Thimble, Occtis, Teor (or new Travis character, though I guess this goes for all four of them)

Do I know where they're going or what they're doing? Nope, I haven't gotten that far yet. Maybe one team is going to Faerie or the Tenebral Reaches (Team 3?)?

I guess we have like 2-3 episodes for stuff to happen so we shall see.

My main question regarding Tyranny is who actually controls her "contract" or whatever it is that allows her to exist in the world with a body. She said that Wick can send her back to the pit whenever he wants, but considering how little he understood his family and his role within it, I don't know how involved he could have been in order to have that much control over her. And Yannessa was saying she basically saved her sisters and Yannessa had been reconsidering the whole demons thing, which suggests that she has the power/control to send them back or not.

If her continued existence is fully dependent on Wick, then *maybe* she can leave town. I don't think he's interested in sending her back to the pit unless he's somehow convinced it would be better for her. That actually just gave me the idea that, if/when she helps Kattigan escape, he can pretend to banish her to save her from Yannessa's wrath while also maintaining his cover. I'm just not sure how far away from Wick she is allowed to be. Or if she'd be comfortable being away from him - yes in a codependency way that would make separating them good character growth, but also does she continue to exist if he dies?

Tyranny *says* her contract is with wick, not his family, but we don't know how she knows that. If it's an inherent, intrinsic aspect of her being that she just knows, cool, great. If it's something the creed told her... I have doubts. Maybe whatever Yannessa has going on that even makes having the aspirants around as an option would overpower Wick's will in this regard.

I dunno, I just feel like these two can't be separated until the terms of the contract are settled, and we don't know what those actually are...

I've been having a bunch of conversations in private / on discord etc. about why Bolaire body sharing with people consensually has simply not been remotely feasible, and probably still is not feasible, even though it is theoretically possible as demonstrated by Tyranny wearing him in episode 29. So I thought I'd post this explanation publicly, because a bunch of people seem to think that Bolaire could have been sharing bodies consensually this whole time and simply chooses not to because he likes torturing people.

Obligatory disclaimer: Bolaire has never done anything wrong in his life ever, and I explicitly morally condone every choice he has ever made. You should go ask your best friend to homoerotically stab you right now so you can follow in his excellent example. Hope that clears up my stance on the matter!

The Life Force Drain

The number one reason this option for Bolaire is not feasible is that he has a draining effect on the life force of people who wear him, and the longer they wear him, the worse it gets. It is a common misconception that Bolaire's hosts die due to starvation, but this is not the case. In episode 4, Taliesin describes the condition Bolaire's previous host: gray skin, eyeballs so flaccid and desiccated the eyesockets appear empty, and chunks of flesh missing around the mouth so you can see the teeth beneath. These are not symptoms of starvation. What's more, one of the soldiers in the episode 13 cold open said that wearing Bolaire for even one day "wreaks havoc on the body."

Given that Bolaire drains his hosts like this, the only way he could get people to voluntarily agree to wear him would be to exploit mentally ill people who wish to self-harm (which is not really any morally better than just straight up body snatching), or to find a group of people who are willing to pass him around, as we saw in the episode 13 flashback with the soldiers. Which brings me to my second point.

Trust

Let's say Bolaire approaches someone for some consensual body-sharing and they say no, or they say yes but then later change their mind and back out. What happens then? Can Bolaire trust them?

The thing is, as I explained in this post, some of the options on the table for Bolaire are fates worse than death, not just for him but for the world at large. Imagine someone turns Bolaire down and then thinks, "Hey, I wonder what House Tachonis would pay me for the knowledge of a secret god-killing weapon that I now have." What do you think would happen if Bolaire were in the hands of an Ethrand? The Tachonis would find some horrific use for him that would cause far more death and destruction than anything Bolaire has ever done personally. Bolaire is a murderer, but he does not want to cause the mass systemic suffering that the Sundered Houses do; indeed, he ideologically opposes it. It's clear that Bolaire has thought about this possibility, because in episode 22, he begged Hal that if he didn't want to put Bolaire on a new body, that he not leave Bolaire to be found. After all, Bolaire was used as a weapon of war, effectively as a slave, for decades before he saw a fateful play and struck out on his own, so he has a pretty clear idea of how bad it could get.

It isn't exactly easy for Bolaire to find someone to approach for potential body-sharing who he trusts enough not to sell him out to a fate worse than death. Of course, he does now have some allies that he does trust that much. But that brings me to my third point.

Autonomy

Even if Bolaire were to, for example, be rotated among his current allies the way he once was shared out among the soldiers in the Falconers' Rebellion, such that he trusted everyone involved and he wasn't draining any one person's life force too much, this still isn't much of a life, either for Bolaire or the people in the group who are wearing him. He could ride along with their lives as an observer or a peanut gallery, but he could not make his own life choices or maintain a consistent persona for the world to interact with. He could not be Bolaire Lathalia, because if he rotated among all these people with a consistent identity, then his nature would become obvious, and then he would be probably be hunted by the Sundered Houses to be used as a tactical nuke.

And on the host side of the equation, how long could any of them keep up with letting Bolaire "wreak havoc on the body" for a day every X days, having him observe their every action and thought? Could they really do that for years on end?

Where does this leave Bolaire?

Well, it leaves him a totally dogshit situation where his only actually feasible choices are to body-snatch and murder people, or to try to find a way to be destroyed or flung to the bottom of the sea forever, if that's even possible. Maybe the latter is the only option that is morally defensible. Maybe that's how this campaign will end for him. I don't know!

I just want to make a quick note about this before people get too silly about the situation. It's very important to remember that Robbie is Native American, and is putting a lot of work into making sure that Kattigan has indigenous cultural touchstones as part of his characterization. And that is the appropriate lens through which we should view his missing and murdered wife and daughter, I think.

I would be reluctant to use fridging in this exact context, because this isn't some imaginary scenario to generate manpain for a white hero, this is a much more common experience of Native American and First Nation people, having their wives and daughters and sisters (in particular, but not exclusively) go missing. And never getting answers, never learning what happened, and not being believed that there's a problem in the first place.

This is like how being rescued from a tower by a prince is not particularly empowering or affirming to cis physically able straight thin perisex white women and girls, but can be for basically anybody else. Particularly black girls and women, who do not get a lot of cultural messages that treat them as people who are so valuable and precious, who may not have the strength to save themselves, or may wish that they didn't fucking have to save themselves (and everyone else) all the time.

White men have this story so often happen that we have a trope name specific to one specific and particularly egregious version of this, but you don't often see men who look like Robbie dealing with this type of story in fictional settings, even though it happens for men like Robbie in real life with horrifying frequency.

Sometimes stories that are old can be new again in different hands, from different point of views, so just... mind how you step here.

Someone else pointed out the whole, sure, his words may be true in a "letter of the law" sort of way ("the deva was not intended to kill anyone here," yeah, but you could have them killed other ways/if it destroys a city you happen be in and you happen to die, *whoopsie*), but I think there's another angle to this too. He wants to be emperor, but keep the people he's been rivals with for generations as his vassals instead of wiping them out?

I think it goes back to his argument for unity against the commoners. He wants the other houses to be meat shields between himself and the people. Maybe I'm wrong, but historically aren't the people at the most accessible level of power the ones who get attacked first? King too powerful and scary and far away, but this local lord is right here!

I’ve seen a couple people compare Julien hating thjazi to Bolaire hating thjazi, and also how Matt is playing it vs how Taliesin is. And they’re bringing up some valid points, but no one is talking about something that feels fairly obvious to me?

Which is that Julien hates Thjazi because he hurt Aranessa, and because he rebelled against the sundered houses. Julien talks a big game about how his station makes him better than others (how much he actually fully has internalized that is up for debate, but it’s an easy way for him to feel superior when he needs to), so Thjazi challenging that felt like a personal attack on him, even though we know it was the right thing to do. Also, my read on whatever the hell happened when Julien “took him down” is that thjazi let him do it? For whatever reason. And a lot of his hatred for Thjazi seems to be from a place of misdirected issues he has with himself. Julien isn’t aware of that thought process, but Matt obviously is.

Meanwhile, Thjazi pretty clearly did not see Bolaire as a full person. Now, his treatment of Bolaire was based on the knowledge that he is a freaky manipulative object who took over and killed at least one member of the Torn Banner so I don’t exactly blame him for that. And we only have Bolaires side of the story to go off of, since Hal got those two nat one insights, so it’s definitely a more complex situation than he’s leading us to believe. But Bolaire does have a unique insight into how Thjazi treated people who he didn’t respect or see as people. His anger towards Thjazi is based on actual ways he was shitty to him personally.

So of course when everyone else is talking about Thjazi as a charming rogue and a thief with a heart of gold who played fast and loose with the rules but always made the right choice for the Greater Good, Taliesin is going to push against that. Because Thjazi being flawed is more interesting to the story! And he’s kind of the only character who is in a position to speak up in a way that doesn’t come across as projection.

I didn't think so originally, though I think some people have been calling it from the beginning. I thought it was something less... Formed? More ephemeral? -that was created when unspoken laws of respect for the dead/hospitality/etc were broken, that would get stronger the longer he went without absolving himself or it getting dispelled. But now that he's not showing up where anyone, good or bad, is expecting him? It seems like the kind of thing nobody could have anticipated that throws all involved for a loop.

Hoping this is how you put in a cut, waaaaay too much aimless theorizing and possible spoilers for the schemers arc below.

I'm wondering what happened that Mara was back "too soon." Thjazi didn't expect to see her then. Maybe he started rushing his message to Hal b/c he was surprised, and it distracted his train of thought. Maybe he said "anyone but you" b/c he *did* plan to die, but figured his people would try to plan something, and knew Azune would take it the hardest when he "failed" to save Thjazi. Maybe the plan was Mara would get back to the city after the heat from his execution died down, visit his body, and from there meet him on the path to hide him from the Tachonis (since he had to have gotten that scar before being captured and she can travel btwn the realms of life and death) and it was too risky for her to be there so early. And it sounds like she got caught before they buried him, preventing her from reaching his body. Perhaps what Julian did (due to the violation? the bodily fluid (not blood or anything more unsanitary, but I believe spit technically still counts)?) acted as some kind of conduit or component to allow the connection, and Thjazi, sensing the situation had changed, decided to take the opportunity to do something no one would have expected.

Because who would assume Julian, of all people, would go to Thjazi's farrah? And if they considered the possibility he'd be there for the sake of his liege lady, who would think he'd get the opportunity to be close enough to the body to do anything to it, much less that he would take it. And on top of all that, who would think a *noble* would do something so crass as to *spit* on the *body* of the *husband of his lady*, during the *farrah*, inside the *home* of the dead man's *family*.

I'm not even sure Brennen expected Julian to do exactly that (unless before the start he asked Matt, "hey, so what do you think Julien's vibe would be at like a funeral for Thjazi, or if he got to be near the body if the execution went through, would he be sneering, would he wish he got to-" "oh he'd straight up spit on him." "... Really?" "I mean, I wouldn't go out of my way to do it, but if there was an opening... Yeah.") but he anticipated *someone* doing *something* with the body that would be a chance for a connection. If it had been someone friendly to Thjazi, maybe instead of a curse it would be a surprise blessing, maybe sporadically the player gets told to add a d4 or advantage to rolls they wouldn't normally get that for and brennan won't explain why. But for characters who are not friendly, or create the connection through a negative act, it manifests as a curse.

Why didn't he latch onto Azune, Thaisha, Hal, shadia, Arranessa, Loza Blade? For one, if the tachonis figured out enough of the plan, a druid of the old path, his wife, and/or family members would probably be the first places they'd look. (I'm also not sure Hal or Shadia actually touched Thjazi's body in game before Julian spat on him) If Thjazi still had some measure of agency in this part, I think he would have chosen not to attach to Azune, b/c he rightly expected him to be in the thick of whatever transpired, and Thjazi wanted distance from it. Or, maybe one of the rolls Luis did during this point was actually to determine if that happened, and he passed/failed (whichever applied for a positive interaction). ((Also imagine if Thjazi *did* connect w/Azune and the mirror/Alter Self lvl up happened, and brennan says "you look at the reflection of a man who could have been Thjazi's son... and for a moment you think you can feel his eyes peering at you, over your shoulder... But when you turn around, it's just you in the room. You and your shadow..."))

And Loza, the other character I can recall touching Thjazi? Well, if it happened before Julian's thing (can't quite recall now, hopefully someone who's been reviewing the transcripts will confirm/deny anything I've said here as accurate or not), then either she passed/failed the roll or my though that some kind of action or component is necessary for the opportunity to come up. Maybe Mara would have had to use her blood, or feathers. Julian happened to spit - "whelp," says dead!Thjazi, "not what I had in mind but something had to pear-shaped for Mara to show up at the hanging, I'm not waiting around where I could *definitely* be found when I could be where no one would look for me. Connecting with my estranged wife's playboy vassal won't be uncomfortable or awkward *at all*... " Or maybe it was the violation - Brennen was betting on someone who didn't like Thjazi taking something from the body, or trying to touch disrespectfully (flicking his nose, head, elsewhere, grabbing his face roughly, etc) and spitting definitely fit the bill.

Julien's shadow being Thjazi could also be a pretty good explanation for the lack of effect it seems to have had on the game. Could be b/c Thjazi is lying low to avoid attention, or is weak from his death but will get stronger as Julian lvls up. Maybe for some rolls against Julian, Brennan has been adding dice or advantage against him without telling the table/explaining why, and no one's called him on it b/c a) Brennen kept rolling like shit even with advantage in all of the situations where people would have freaked out had Julian died or something if Brennen rolled well and/or b) Brennan's the DM and hadn't brought attention to the fact that he could be doing things like faking roles until the end of the schemers arc, so no one thought to challenge it. So the shadow/curse *may* have been influencing things all along and we didn't know.

guys. i thought this was why we liked him. hello?? i genuinely don't understand the urge to say "he didn't do anything wrong!!" because well, he did. he's actively doing it. i ALSO don't understand the callout posts saying "this thing he's doing is morally bad. this means i don't like him as a character." like are those not completely seperate issues.

i genuinely don't think taliesin is playing him with the mentality that everything he's doing is morally correct [even if he is, intention of the player is also a separate issue, and the character's role within the story remains the same]. that's what makes him so interesting! instead of arguing that he's a good person (undefinable attribute + he's not even a person), why don't we instead think about how he's justifying his own actions to himself. is that not way more interesting?? to consider why he kills the way he does? to consider the way he was, ultimately, created to be a character in a play, and has probably never quite shaken the habit of seeing everyone (except a select few) as inconsequential and unimportant? to think about how hal now has to grapple with this realization, trying to maintain basic moral decency while circumstances force him even closer to his utterly amoral murderous best friend? is that not more interesting? is that not what we're all in it for?? sometimes characters do bad things. is that not what makes it fun?????

I’m far from the first person to point this out but after last episode I’m very stuck on the fact that Azune is not only a major crier, he willingly cries in FRONT of people. He grieves actively with Hal, he breaks down into overwhelmed tears with Murray and Thimble, because these are his friends that he loves and trusts to be vulnerable around. Even if he spends most of his time bottling up how he feels and putting the mask on in order to get the job done, he still allows himself time to let it out around the people who will be there for him while he rides it out.

Meanwhile, Julien was in the Schneffenkeep with the one character that he’s been shown to be closest with, who’s known him since he was a child and was there right in the thick of it during his darkest moment, and he still waited until Lady Aranessa left him alone to finally begin to weep over his father’s death.

Is anybody else….seeing the potential there……….

So ok look. The point is not the flared leg by itself. These cannot be yoga pants. These are, and you have to understand this if you are too young to have worn them, BLUE JEANS. And this was the last years before all jeans were 70% spandex.

They were denim, and they weren't bell bottoms. They hung loose from the knee in a way that would make a wizard envious. We all walked around like we were wearing hakama. And they dragged on the ground. That was important. Ragged cuffs. If your jeans weren't so long that they had ratty cuffs, they were embarrassingly short.

And the thing about denim is that it's a twill weave and it's cotton. So not only does it hold a lot of water, it wicks. Walking around in these suckers on a wet day could get you wet to the knees even if you never stepped in a puddle.

Then you'd go inside and take off your shoes and try to avoid letting your freezing, wet, filthy pant legs touch your skin.

The visceral memory of that time is something that never leaves you. Everyone's jeans were many inches higher in the back than the front because you kept stepping on the hem and ripping it off. Your lower legs were so very cold. Every new pair of jeans literally enveloped your entire foot, they were so so long re: leg-to-waist ratio. Walking on a rainy day was a legitimate workout. You have no idea.

At 1 PM on a Friday I get an email from my boss. I'm busy as hell so I don't check it immediately. Then I get a phone call from my boss, which has almost never happened before. I'm a white collar worker, a historian. There's never a 'historical emergency' requiring a phone call to kick me in the ass and get to work.

The request is so urgent my boss needs it by the end of the work week. Which, y'know, is 5 PM on a Friday. So I have four hours to do it.

It's a forwarded request. Somebody contacted a member of the donation team asking for help, "I need a map from the Vietnam War to use for a presentation." It's somebody she's trying to coax into giving a five figure donation to the museum.

The request was asked to the donation team member, who then emailed my boss, who then emailed and called me urgently.

This map required:

North and South Vietnam in it

All four areas that South Vietnam was divided into for military purposes ('Corps') clearly delineated

Four cities, all of them horrifically misspelled, and only identifiable because I know what battle the requester is asking about (it’s in III Corps on the border with Cambodia) (the requester danced around the battle but I’m knowledgeable enough to identify it)

Has Laos and Cambodia in it

Has the Ho Chi Minh Trail in it

So. I was mad about the 'you have literally four hours to find a map with a lot of requirements.'

I was then mad at myself about finding a copyright free map from Texas Tech University within half an hour, proving her right for asking me to do it.

Then, after I found a map that perfectly met the requirements, I was equally amazed, baffled, and horrified when I read further into the forwarded email chain.

The donation team team member they were speaking to used AI to generate a map.

The above put half of North Vietnam in South Vietnam, made the Ho Chi Minh Trail a country, made 60% of Cambodia part of South Vietnam, put the DMZ extremely high up in North Vietnam, completely disconnected the southern tip of Vietnam, misplaced all of the Corps zones, etc etc

At the very last second the donation team member had a moment of divine clarity, remembering there's three historians on payroll to ask for this kind of thing from. So she contacted my boss while saying, "I had fun with this, but I decided I should check for accuracy before I send it to the donor! I need a fact check by the end of the day, then I send it"

My boss, while not the most knowledgeable on the Vietnam War, does know her geography. She took one look, and knew it was so off she called me to tell me how urgent it is that I look at the email and respond
