every time i see a supposedly brilliant, scheming, revenge-fueled cdrama fl do something predictably stupid, i can't help but sigh and miss my girl xue fangfei. you know who wouldn't run off half-cocked into the night? xue fangfei. she'd put on her song-dynasty-punk yellow eyeshadow, think through her purposes clearly, accept her own limitations when necessary, set the board as she wanted it, and then put her jade-faced fake-cynic loverboy general to WORK

even after accepting their feelings and dating, segye still has his nasty temper and his rudeness/ego to 99% of people and seori still has her sharp tongue and refusal to not be her own savior. neither character has been personality-nerfed. they’re the same pieces of work, but just in love.

this scene was nothing less than perfection. it feels familiar on the surface, but it completely subverts the template. it's not a scene of distrust or conflict; it's a scene of mutual confession. a distillation of their crazy gift of the magi dynamic with both lives (sorta) laid bare, and the most honest they've been so far, even though not much was said out loud.

and boy, heo namjun is an ac-TOR™️. screenshots can't do him justice because there's no way to capture the multitude of things he does within a single second in a still. and EVERYTHING around him works too. lim ji-yeon is fantastic, even though when it comes to the romance she's given less to play with — although her newfound courage turning to shock and then abject guilt (when he brings up using him) and a rage that's FOR him? perfection. the character writing for both of them is great, as is the screenwriting — every scene is meticulous and rings true, emotionally and (sufficiently) logically. but truly what takes this show from great to top-tier is heo namjun. it's been a while since we've gotten something this good in k-dramaland and frankly it's going to be a good long while before we get something else of this caliber. finger crossed they keep it up till the end.

ashes to crown is style over substance but the leads have the ability to carry the madness and as much chemistry as chen duling can have with the y chromosome. the bizarrely red, architectural-digest-but-ancient-china sets are pretty and lend the whole thing a fantastical vibe that actually helps the crazy plot and pace feel less jarring. zhou yiran's eyeshadow is serving and chen duling is glaring at people vengefully 80% of the time. honestly, what more could i want? also, look at this poster because i can't figure out how to take netflix screenshots and i don't care to figure it out. they went hard and i appreciate it!!

ashes to crown is absolutely breakneck, oh my god. no complaints! but why the HELL would they dub chen duling and zhou yiran of all people? if there are two idol drama stars who can deliver their lines, it's these two! the dub feels like a downgrade :/

all done with lighter and princess. what an excellent showcase for chen feiyu! i've seen him in 3 other dramas — when destiny brings the demon, love beyond the grave, and love story in the 1970s. while he was objectively good in all of them, i think this is his strongest performance — i couldn't have imagined him playing a powder keg before i watched this. truly embodied the vibe of an unpredictable little psycho i'd be scared to cross paths with in prison.

as for the romance, i get it, even though it wasn't for me (which has nothing to do with being a "toxic" romance, as i've seen people call it — who's to say, and who cares?). the first half had some cute moments, and i thought the build-up was really organic. i believed they liked each other, and then i believed they'd been together for three years, and then in every scene in the last third their 6+ years of baggage was written in bold across every interaction. more praise for chen feiyu because boy did i feel, second-hand, the visceral and constant anxiety of dating someone like his character. however the writing in the last third was weak, and so much felt unresolved within the romance. zhang jingyi was okay in a cookie-cutter youth-drama sense, though her character wasn't for me (although from ep 10ish onwards the writing for her character started to come together).

the rest of the show — boooo. the external conflicts/antagonists were basic and boring and not well executed.

overall, high highs (chen feiyu), aggregate shrugs (the romance) and jeers (everything else). i can see why it has a devoted following amongst the drama twitter crowd (blond feiyu playing a domineering punk, what's not to like), but as a show on the whole it's objectively... fine. not necessarily something i'll come back to.

I am catching up on SS and oh god SO LOVELY. I kept thinking that when it comes out that Erkan lied about Derya's grave, it was going to be a huge rift and a disaster and Dicle would leave etc etc which I would understand but also felt awful towards him because he really was trying to figure out some way, any way, to prevent her from attempting suicide and like...

And he is so defeated...

But what totally floored me because it was so unexpected, was her reaction. I was expecting the usual storming off or divorce or who knows what else but Dicle is just - they are both just so GOOD. Because she reaches for his face and just... No wonder he can't move on from her because how else is he ever going to find such tenderness from anyone?
