The note inside a bullet.
B-17 bomber is riddled with German anti-aircraft fire but miraculously survives. Later they discover the explosive shells were all inert; sabotaged by Nazi slaves working in armament factories.
Inside one empty shell is a written note: it's all we can do for you now.
The most important part of all this is that these small acts of bravery and noncompliance cannot be known as long as the enemy still stands, and might never be known. Just because it doesnāt seem like anyone is doing anything doesnāt mean itās true. The best malicious compliance or subtle sabotage is the one thatās never detected, but makes ravages nonetheless.

"there comes a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to throw your bodies upon the wheels and upon the gears. Upon the levers. Upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop!"

Hi if you somehow weren't able to study raccoons what would your animal of choice have been?
Sorry if you get asked that a lot
Coyotes.
A lot of my interest in raccoons has to do with their existence within anthropogenic landscapes and how they interact with humans. And also how they are deeply misunderstood. That can apply to coyotes too. And they are very cute!! They just arenāt as smart and they can be harder to find for observational studies (aka Iām lazy as fuck.)
Anyway, here is a coyote I grabbed by hand while the cops and animal control watched

"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.

My flu isn't all that bad, but I had a super weird flu dream about a world where if you died and your body hadn't been found yet, all your online accounts would keep posting in a mildly annoyed tone from the pov of the corpse. None of the posts were creepy, just stuff like "Stuck laying facedown in my bed forever #mybedforever," and because it happened somewhat regularly it was all treated pretty normally, some kind of āthe spirit hasnāt moved on yetā schtick. And it'd be a little tragic to find out grandma died from her facebook post "the cat is sniffing my face... he can tell I'm not breathing but is so very polite and not eating me yet... š¤£ššæ" but it'd kind of be last words in a way and at least more personal than hearing she died over the phone from some coroner.
The main awkward thing was sometimes the person behind a big tumblr would die and their tumblr would start corpse posting, but none of their mutuals know them irl to recover the body, so you're all stuck waiting as days pass and their account keeps corpse posting, with the knowledge that nobody from real life has checked on them, and that when someone eventually does they'll find a decaying corpse
- cherry wine is about domestic abuse. itās now called a cute proposal song.
- too sweet is about seizing the day and ignoring healthy habits in favor of having more fun with unhealthy ones. heās actively critical of himself in the song. itās now called a song about thinking youāre superior for drinking black coffee.
- take me to church is about worship as a metaphor for sex. itās called a religious song.
- eat your young is a song about war and political greed. itās called a song about sex.
- now, the strongly political message of nobodyās soldier is being ignored in favor of calling it a metaphor for hozierās relationship with his fans.
when are we going to stop simplifying hozierās music down to cute little cottagecore bogman forest music? maybe you dont want to hear this but i donāt care. quit listening to hozier for the aesthetic. thereās a reason why empire now, foreignerās god, butchered tongue, etc. songs with unignorable political messages are among his least popular songs.
I was honestly shocked when i found out how unpopular Empire Now is. Really? The song that gives me goosebumps every time i listen to it? The song that made me want to scream its lyrics in broad daylight? The song with the line "Future's so bright it's burning"? And most people have no fucking idea it exists?
I dunno, maybe it's just the place i've lived in for the majority of my life both being rich with greenery and nature and having its citizens live in constant fear of being killed/losing their home in a political conflict, from natural disasters, or deathly diseases spreading so fast here that made me resonate with hozier's music so much.
What i wanted to add to the original post, and what, in my opinion, every hozier fan should understand, is:
It's perfectly fine and nice for a hozier fan to go for a forest walk with Would That I playing in their headphones, but do not ignore the hozier fans who blast Nobody's Soldier in their room to stop hearing the siren wailing outside.
It's really cute and romantic for a hozier listener to dance to Work Song with their significant other, but do not forget the hozier fans who listen to Nina Cried Power after their government gives them another reason to be killed or arrested.
Hozier pours his soul and mind into his every political anti-oppression song, but people choose to ignore it for their own comfort.
There's so much more to Hozier than romance and forests, and i need more people to understand that
I think this is an important point, but I'd add one nuance: the existence of multiple interpretations doesn't erase the one Hozier intended.
People falling in love to Work Song or proposing to Cherry Wine isn't the problem by itself. Art inevitably becomes personal once it's released. The problem starts when the original context is forgotten entirely, or when songs that are explicitly about abuse, colonialism, war, oppression, or resistance get flattened into "cottagecore forest vibes."
One of the reasons Hozier's music resonates so deeply is because he refuses to separate beauty from brutality. He'll write a song that sounds tender while describing horrific abuse. He'll wrap political anger in gorgeous poetry. That contrast is intentional, it forces you to sit with uncomfortable truths instead of looking away.I think the best way to appreciate his music is to allow it to be both.
Dance to Work Song. Walk through the woods to Would That I. But also listen to Butchered Tongue, Empire Now, Foreigner's God, Nina Cried Power, and Nobody's Soldier with the same attention. If we only celebrate the romance and the aesthetic while overlooking the songs asking us to confront injustice, we're missing a huge part of what makes Hozier the artist he is.
Imagine if politicians actually cared about the health and well-being of the people, instead of feeding corporate greed.
All our lives would be better.
