âAkerman was younger than Orson Welles was when he made âCitizen Kane,â younger than Jean-Luc Godard was when he made âBreathless.â The three films deserve to be mentioned together. âJeanne Dielmanâ is as influential and as important for generations of young filmmakers as Wellesâs and Godardâs first films have been. Akerman presented monumentally composed, meticulously observed, raptly protracted images of a womanâs domestic routineâJeanne (Delphine Seyrig) preparing cutlets in her kitchen, for instance. These images prove cinematically that the domestic lives of women are the stuff of art; that womenâs private lives are as ravaged by the forces of history as are lives lived on the public stage of politics; and that the pressures of womenâs unquestioned, unchallenged, and unrelieved confinement in the domestic realm and in family roles is a societal folly that leads to ruin, a form of violence that begets violence.â
â Richard Brody, âPostscript: Chantal Akerman.â
when i was younger i was so obsessed with being perfectly moral and now i've finally accepted i'm just as evil as everyone else is in the right circumstances
âI started painting in the madhouse, where I learnt how to translate emotions, fear, violence, hope, and joy into painting. It was through creation that I discovered the sombre depths of depression, and how to overcome it.â - Niki de Saint Phalle

âThe truth is that sexuality is everywhere: the way a bureaucrat fondles his records, a judge administers justice, a businessman causes money to circulate; the way the bourgeoisie fucks the proletariat; and so on. And there is no need to resort to metaphors, any more than for the libido to go by way of metamorphoses. Hitler got the fascists sexually aroused. Flags, nations, armies, banks get a lot of people arousedâ
