Hope this isn't a silly question but how exactly do tiara's stay on someones head?

It’s not a silly question at all.  There are a few different ways to secure a tiara.  The method can depend on the tiara or the person’s preferences and usually multiple methods are used together.  I would like to preface this by saying that I know next to nothing about styling hair but I’m going to try my best.  I recommend checking out @royal-hair who knows much more about this stuff than me.

Velvet -  Some tiaras have velvet wrapped around the base to make the tiara itself not be slippery but the velvet alone is not going to keep a tiara on someone’s head.

Elastic - Most tiaras have little loops at each end.  The elastic is attached to the loop and then goes around the back of the head, hopefully hidden by the hairstyle, and then attached to the other end.

Hair Pins - The pin is pushed through the frame of the tiara and into the hair holding it in place.  You can see a couple pins here on Queen Maxima and also notice how she doesn’t have the frame of her tiaras wrapped in velvet.

Braid - A little braid is made across the top of the person’s head right behind where they want the tiara to be and then the tiara is either sewn or pinned to the braid.  I was having trouble finding a picture that showed this clearly because the braid is usually placed behind the tiara but Lady Gabriella helpfully placed it in front of the tiara so we could see it.

Comb - A comb can be attached to the middle back of the tiara and then pushed into the hair.  Queen Margrethe particularly likes this method and she’s had combs attached to several of her tiaras.

If the hairdresser is good at her job (i.e. Swedish) then we shouldn’t be able to see any of the attachments and it will look like the tiara is just magically staying on the person head.

That being said, let’s get to the amazing world of tiara placement!

@tiaramania did an amazing job trying to explain how tiaras stay in their place. The velvet base will prevent it from slipping down their head, but the tiara needs something more to not move, and that’s when some tricks make an appearence.

The royal hairdressers usually make an amazing job hiding the elastic bands, bobby pins and combs, and that’s why I can’t tell you wich one is the most used, but I think that its the bobby pins. They’re small, in different colors and really easy to hide with a little bit of volume just before the tiara. The elastic band is harder to hide because you need enough hair to be above it and a low bun or updo to hide everything. For the combs you just need to have enough hair for it to not slip. So yes, I would totally use the bobby pins because you can use them in every part of the tiara to secure it.

As I told before, the hairdressers are pros and hide everything perfectly, but there where times when we could see their tricks:

hey! i’m back with some more writing tips! this time it’s for character development! when i’m developing characters or procrastinating actually writing i like to make these fun visual charts! 

they look cool, theyre great reference points, and they tell you a little more about the characters! for this tutorial, i’m going to be making some for my new WIP Eye for an Eye! here’s how to start:

1. 6 Traits

Start by writing a list of 6 traits. They should be ones that act as themes in the story, and then other ones that you know will come up. For  EFAE, I know humor, responsibility, loyalty, and honesty will come up often, and that my two main characters are opposed on these! cecily is very funny and takes nothing seriously, will lie to get her way, and isn’t really loyal to anyone, and alistair is very serious and responsible, incredibly honest (he’s a faerie) and very loyal to his court. so, i’ll include these in the chart because it’ll show the difference in them! i also included strength and intelligence (like in D&D) because those are just important stats to know for writing. are they whip smart? can they fight? You can pick as many traits as you want, but just know you’ll have to make room for them in the chart (aka more sides). i stick to 6 because it’s a good solid number.

2. Drawing the chart

I made my chart on Photoshop, but here’s a blank one for you to use!

Put the categories/traits on the flat edges of the hexagon, and use a fill tool (or a pen if you print it out!) to color in the boxes. More boxes = the more they embody that trait. If Cecily has a lot of humor boxes filled, it means she’s really funny!

3. Filling it Out

Pick one character for each chart set up. I’m going to use Cecily for the example. I try to make sure each character will have at least one trait on the lowest setting, and one on the highest. The rest can just be filled in wherever. Anyway, here’s Cecily’s completed chart:

It’s a fun little exercise you can use to get to know your characters better! I’m a visual person, so this is pretty fun when I need something to do! Also, having to pick which 6 traits helps me make sure my characters are different while also recognizing which themes will be important in the books.

Seriously, a couple hours with this and my first chapter is so much better. It helped me see problems I KNEW I had (passive voice, showing vs. telling, adverbs) but was having a hard time sussing out. It has made editing so much more fun and easy because now I know what the hell I’m doing and what to look for instead of stumbling around blind shouting “adverbs? adverbs?” like a town crier. I can already tell I’m getting better at seeing things without the program having to show me too.

I officially worship this thing.
