this is it. this is the most boyfriends thing i've ever heard from them. you don't feel like communicating with words so you respond with random sounds? boyfriends.
my wife draws two tarot cards a day and todays were 1 related to "ingrattitude" (forget which) and 1 called the king of wands. who she interprets most routinely to be our landlord.
so she said that the cards were saying that we needed to be more grateful for our landlord which was kind of sort of relevant because he was coming that day to fix our fridge. our powerbill went up about $100 over the previous month and i was pretty sure it was from the seal on the fridge door failing which i was slightly salty about.
anyway i teased her for literally being such a weenie that she was going to basically tip our landlord. but hes honestly a good guy and im in general favor of making friends with people. so when she asked if she could buy him a little gift basket from the bakery down the street i was like. okay. you can get our landlord a gift basket. i guess. if you reaaaaaally want to. you wimp.
but now i have come back from work and hes comped us for the previous months power bill AND hes fixed our fridge AND hes said hes got a spare weekend up at his cabin next month and hes given it to us because he likes us. like as a freebie. and my wife is possibly the smuggest person in the entire world. i am very skeptical of her tarot cards and shes like hey. hey. guess what just saved us $100 and got us a weekend getaway? hm? was it common sense? was it practical budgeting? was it being standoffish with our landlord? no. it was my tarot cards. kiss my mystical ass you arrogant nerd.
i still dont think i can recommend this as a rule. i have a very weird and friendly landlord. our lease with him is 1/3 of a sheet of paper long and has multiple typos in it. he is both very trusting and very trustworthy. mormon in the martin harris sense.
I turn 30 next month so hereâs what I learned in my 20s:
âdonât work for startups, theyâre always one âinnovative ideaâ away adding âsell your kidneys on the black marketâ to your job description.
âkeeping a collection of basic OTC medicine on you will save your life one day. I recommend Advil, Imodium, and TUMS.
âthose little single-use glasses cleaning wipes are 1000% worth the money
âoverly self-depreciating jokes just make people uncomfortable, wean yourself off of them
âyou can buy dehydrated mini marshmallows in bulk online and theyâre a godsend for hot cocoa
âpeople donât care if you have fidget toys on your desk they just want to play with them
âtry to go to bed BEFORE the existential ennui kicks in
Also drink water and eat a plant
This is all GREAT. I turned 40 last week, so permit me to add what I learned in my 30s:
keep on not working for startups
sometimes there comes a point where the thing (fandom, hobby, friendship, romantic relationship) you loved no longer brings you joy. And that's okay. Try to mourn the loss, take joy in the memories, and don't burn any bridges in case ten years go by and you find yourself back in that fandom/hobby/relationship again
it turns out that (ugh) moderate regular exercise is (spit) good for you. The sooner you make it part of your life, the easier it'll be
related: if you throw yourself into a new exercise regime too hard and too fast, without stopping to rest or consider whether a particular move is good for you ... well, shoulder injuries are painful and consults with orthopedic surgeons are expensive
knees are bastards too
don't even get me started on ankles
there may come a time when your digestive system is too fragile for ibuprofin. I'm sorry
one day you're gonna wake up and realise you no longer give any fucks about some things that used to bother you
on the other hand, you might be alarmed to realise what you still give a fuck about
never get down on the floor without an exit strategy for getting back up
I turn 50 this year. what I have learned in my 40s:
"loving yourself" is less of a feeling and more of an action. you can start doing it any time and it will make your life better and better as you go on
this will happen incrementally - be patient
along those lines, if you haven't started making an active effort to quit shit-talking yourself, suck it up and do it
no, shut up. do it. "but it's haaaaard!" don't care. do it.
whether you like it or not, you are mortal and you need to go to the doctor for an annual checkup
stretch regularly - your future self will thank you
at some point you will encounter people much younger than you arguing passionately and incorrectly about history you personally remember and experienced
this will be infuriating and annoying
otoh, most other things just... will not matter to you as much
at some point you will shift from wanting to go out to being like "eh" and deciding to stay in. this is okay.
you will have absolutely no idea what The Youth are talking about and you will not care
but if you keep your mind open to new ideas you'll never be irrelevant
your company still doesn't love you - don't give them more than they pay you for
get a fucking hobby, especially a hobby that involves physically creating/handling something and/or moving your body in physical space. it will do you more good than you can imagine
Just turned 60 and let me say:
Find joy, every kind, it's always worth it
I'm talking that massive, never-ending Discord chat with your bestie? The one that makes you giggle through the day? It's not a "waste of time," it's what time was made for
If that's fanfic for your favorite characters who never even met on screen celebrate that!
If that's building a tiny fleet of snake villagers for your snake town and they just cover your mantel hell yes!
If that's collecting pillows and making a fort of them every weekend I'll be right over
Feeling and sharing joy is the whole point
This is too temptingâŚ, so, Iâm 74, and: donât fund startups
Please keep stretching and exercise enough NOT to need an elaborate strategy to get up from the floor. IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE
Say bye to your employer as early as you possibly can, unless you really love your job. You wonât be sorry.
Keep doing the annual checkups đđź
Enjoy that fucking hobby youâve acquired in your 50, or find something new. Do try new things & adventures.

#Please little bird
I love that the modern-day tumblr post equivalent of chain emails only requires me to reblog a relatively pleasant image instead of forward an email to a bunch of my friends and family members to quell my raging anxiety.
Do your thing, little guy.
i can no longer take any description of a male protagonist seriously if the writer describes him as âbroodingâ
because i used to think âoh, thatâs sexy and mysterious, etcâ
and now i think of this
once youâve been loudly cussed out by 2.5 lbs of feathers, that word only ever means one thing
This is the kinda brooding i WANNA see
#so this behavior basically translates to nonstop cuddling of offspring and vocal aggression towards anything that tries to prevent that #tbh i would be delighted to see male protagonists do just this sort of thing (via starfoozle)
I just had to explain what I was cackling at to my roommate. It automatically passes the Laugh Rule.
She found her reluctant fiance, Erstad, brooding out on the rainy moors.Â
âIs that a baby rabbit?â she asked, observing his huddled form.Â
âITâS SIX BABY RABBITS AND YOU CANâT TOUCH THEM,â replied Ernstad, contriving to look twice his usual size and at least three times his usual fierceness.Â
âWhoah okay damn,â she said, and backed away.Â
iâd read the gothic romance novel of ernstad and his baby rabbits like right now
This means that Batman, obsessive hoarder of orphans, is the only dark mysterious character that can be accurately described as âbroodingâ.
idk who needs to hear this rn but suffering is not noble. take the tylenol
One time when I was younger I was refusing to take headache medicine and my mom said âthe person who invented that medicine is probably so sad you wonât let them help youâ and now every time I find myself denying medicine I just imagine the saddest scientist making those big wet eyes like âwhy wonât you let me helpâ and whoop then I take the medicine
scientist when you don't take the medicine they developed to help your pain
As long as you are taking a SAFE dose of it, then it's *good* for you. Pain is bad for the body. The inflammation from prolonged pain can worsen chronic issues and make it harder to heal.
Ibuprofen is best for pain that has inflammation, while acetaminophen doesn't help with inflammation but is more broadly effective on other types of pain. As long as you are taking the recommended dose, you can even take them TOGETHER, since they have different mechanisms of action.
You do need to be aware of how much and how often you are taking any pain medication. Overdoses can be very painful (even lethal.) And if you are in chronic pain often enough that you need more than the safe dose, then you need to look into other medications to manage that pain.
(Also, if you are specifically taking Acetaminophen/Tylenol for your go-to pain management, getting some NAC and taking that with it reduces the risk of overdose AND may strengthen the effect.)
One other thing: NSAIDS (ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen being the three big ones) can cause digestive issues with chronic use, including stomach ulcers. That doesn't mean "don't take them," it means "if you're at the point where you're on them all the time, every day, constantly, you should talk to a doctor about either reducing that risk or switching to another medication that doesn't have those side effects."
I donât have the source for this table anymore but I felt it should be added to this post.
Also please please please consult your doctor if you are on any other type of medication that put large strains on your liver or kidneys before taking any kind of NSAIDs as they can recommend alternatives.
Yes Chronic Kidney Disease and liver disease prevent the use of NSAIDS entirely. Please remember this. Tylenol is the least harmful to these organs. If migraines are your problem, ask neurologist about the triptan drug family. Downside with these is nausea.
I feel that it is worth bringing up again:
As a scientist, this is the way I feel when people in pain don't take the medication that was developed to help with pain:
Especially because as a scientist, I know that pain sensitization is a thing, and that experiencing pain for long periods of time can even train your whole nervous system to be even more reactive to potential pain. So if at all possible, I want my friends who are experiencing pain to try to control that pain as much as possible.
So if you are in pain, and you do not have any massive kidney and liver strain that prohibits you from taking a NSAID or paracetamol/Tylenol?
Please take the pain medicine. Please. Pleeeaaaaaase. I'm a scientist.
yeah i'm a scientist who specializes in designing new pain meds. suffering is not noble, this is exactly how i look when y'all don't manage your pain:
take the meds! i became a scientist in this field explicitly to help people! i became a scientist because i too experience chronic pain and i failed out of literally all pain meds on the market. those of us in this field, we make these things to be used. be safe, follow doses, and if you have questions, ask your doc and pharmacist!

also, its sister tweet:
How could you forget:
Had to add this gem
If the vampires from WWDITS would meet the vampires from IWTV (TV-show):
Lestat and Nadja would instantly have beef. About what? No one knows.
Lazslo would loathe Lestat bc he's french, but otherwise he's a nice chap.
Louie would have beef with Guilliermo because Lestat seduced him, which in turn would make Louie and Nandor try to hook up to make them jealous, but they simply couldn't.
Nadja, The Dolly, and Claudia would be instant Bff's. "With those two as fathers? Poor child." They would give Claudia a proper vampire makeover.
The Dolly would want to sleep with Lestat.
Claudia would threaten to disembowel Collin the first time he would try to feed on her.
Louie and the Guide would spend a lot of time together, not because they like each other, but because everyone else would be too busy to hang out with them. They'd give each other art advice.
Claudia wouldn't give a shit about who Nandor was, which would make him pester her with all his acomplishments.
Armand would try to sneak into the house, and Guilliermo would accidentally hurt him, causing Armand to want revenge, but be too chickenshit to do anything about it.
Gulliermo would think Armand is a wet paper towel.
Claudia and Lazslo wouldn't trust each other.
Lestat would leave the room whenever Colin would try to feed from him.
Armand would start unloading all his issues on Collin, which ironically would drain Collin.
Baron Afanas and Lestat would sleep together because it would be ludicrous not too.

how to find literally any post on a blog in seconds (on desktop)
there are so many posts about ~tumblr is so broken, you canât find any post on your own blog, itâs impossible, bluhrblub~
I am here to tell you otherwise! it is in fact INCREDIBLY easy to find a post on a blog if youâre on desktop/browser and you know what youâre doing:
url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant. every single post, every single time. in chronological order starting with the most recent post. note: it will not find #croissants or that time you made the typo #croidnssants. for a tag with multiple words, itâs just /tagged/my-croissant and it will show you everything with the exact phrase #my croissant
url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant/chrono will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the exact phrase #croissant, but it will show them in reverse order with the oldest firstÂ
url.tumblr.com/search/croissant isnât as perfect at finding everything, but itâs generally loads better than the search on mobile. it will find a good array of posts that have the word croissant in them somewhere. could be in the body of the post (op captioned it âlook at my croissantâ) or in the tags (#man I want a croissant). it wonât necessarily find EVERYTHING like /tagged/ does, but I find itâs still more reliable than search on mobile. you can sometimes even find posts by a specific user by searching their url. also, unlike whatever random assortment tumblr mobile pulls up, it will still show them in a more logically chronological order
url.tumblr.com/day/2020/11/05 will show you every post on the blog from november 5th, 2020, in case youâre taking a break from croissants to look for destiel election memesÂ
url.tumblr.com/archive/ is search paradise. easily go to a particular month and see all posts as thumbnails! search by post type! search by tags but as thumbnails now
url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio will show you every audio post on your blog (you can also filter by other post types). sometimes a little imperfect if youâre looking for a video when the op embedded the video in a text post instead of posting as a video post, etc
url.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/croissant will show you EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant, but it will show you them in the archive thumbnail view divided by months. very useful if youâre looking for a specific picture of a croissant that was reblogged 6 months ago and want to be able to scan for it quicklyÂ
url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio/tagged/croissant will show you every audio post tagged with the specific phrase #croissant (you can also filter by photo or text instead, because I donât know why you have audio posts tagged croissant)Â
the tag system on desktop tumblr is GENUINELY amazing for searching within a specific blog!Â
caveat: this assumes a person HAS a desktop theme (or âcustom themeâ) enabled. a âcustom themeâ is url.tumblr.com, as opposed to tumblr.com/url. Iâve heard you have to opt-into the former now, when it used to be the default, so not everyone HAS a custom theme where you can use all those neat url tricks.Â
if the person doesnât have a âcustom themeâ enabled, youâre beholden to the search bar. still, Iâve found the search bar on tumblr.com/url is WAY more reliable than search on mobile. for starters, it tends to bring posts up in a sensible order, instead of dredging up random posts from 2013 before anything else
if youâre on mobile, Iâm sorry. godspeed and good luck finding anything. (my one tip is that if youâre able to click ON a tag rather than go through the search bar, youâll have better luck. if your mutual has recently reblogged a post tagged #croissant, you can click #croissant and itâll bring up everything tagged #croissant just like /tagged/croissant. but if thereâs no readily available tag to click on, you have to rely on the mobile search bar and its weird bizarre whims)Â
the archive/tagged trick is a lifesaver!!
a caveat on opâs caveat is that if your blog/the blog you want to search is older than [whenever they forced everybody into the tumblr.com/user change], most of these tricks will still work whether or not they have enabled âcustom theme.â
tumblr works itâs just a closely guarded secret
Important addition - they have changed the way they incorporate multi-word tags in the url.
blogname.tumblr.com/tagged/two-words will bring up posts tagged â#two-wordsâ
to get posts tagged â#two wordsâ you now must use blogname.tumblr.com/tagged/two%20words
this is better because itâs more in line with how literally the entire rest of the internet represents things in URLs but if you donât remember it, it WILL get you.
if youâre on mobile use your mobile browser. youâll need to log in separately (and may need to choose desktop view to really get the most out of the site) but archive and blog search work on a mobile browser.
There is one more trick that can be helpful when you are looking for a post but donât remember what blog you saw it on or donât have the time to sort through the results you get from one of the above methods. In the Google search bar, query the following:
âa phrase from the postâ site:tumblr.com
You can also omit the quote marks if youâre not sure you remember exact phrasing, and use site:blogname.tumblr.com if you want to search a specific blog.
I'm just saying, if there's a curse that runs along your family line and you don't tell your kids about it, how the hell are they supposed to go on a quest to stop it?
Tell your children about your medical history.
