yeah I think it’s tough to pick the high point of a long lived institution that has peaks and troughs across the centuries, especially when you might say that it is at its strongest before it reaches its biggest size, and the institutions that enabled it to do so might not work as well later.
same issue with the Qing Empire, once it reaches maximum size it “declines” in the sense that it stagnates and the contradictions increase and the institutions wither, and that continues for a while before it falls apart.

I think the fact that we used to kill people over insults and society was okay with that is something that gets less attention than it deserves; modern life is really fuckin’ weird by historical standards.
I mean people still kill each other over insults today, but back then everyone looking on would just nod and be like “understandable.”
not even like, real insults. this is discussed at length in historical sword manuals where they’re like “you just better carry a sword at all times in case you happen upon the cousin’s cousin of a guy you slighted” or “if you said you didn’t like nuts, another guy might want to duel you because his eyes are hazel”

Lately I’ve been thinking over just how weird it is that as recently as the 19th century it was considered normal, even classy, to agree to duels after one man insulted another. And obviously I don’t know what the verbal exchanges of two duelers back in the day actually sounded like, but whenever I read descriptions of these duels it sounds like they were conducted in an incredibly civil way even in person, with the duelers greeting each other and agreeing on parameters in what I understand to be a perfectly courteous tone. It’s like two men have effectively agreed to literally be mortal enemies and are attempting to kill each other and are treating it like just a very competitive game.

It is interesting to hear so many voices on the political Left argue that the almost unprecedented job loss and economic displacement we have seen is “just money” when for decades (at least) they have contended that poverty was a Pandora ’s box responsible for virtually every social evil in existence from crime, to psychological maladies, to poor nutrition, drug addiction, premature death etc.

you wanna know something that fucks me up when i think about it. what really fucks me up. that the west coast of the us has different butter than the east coast. like it’s an entirely different shape. when i learned that my brain metaphorically exploded. something as fundamental and constant as butter is completely different based on whether you grew up in oregon or south carolina. where is the divide. why doesn’t anyone talk about this. oh fuck i’m thinking about the east/west butter divide again i gotta calm down
i’m from massachusetts. when i first learned that not only is the bottom butter common in the western part of the us, but it’s the only butter that some people know, i lost my goddamned mind. i had never even SEEN any butter other than the top butter until i bought some at trader joe’s and was like what the goddamned hell is this. now every time i see tj’s butter in my fridge i have a minor exestential crisis. that first time i googled the history of butter. east coast butter is called elgins and west coast butter is called west coast stubbies. i need to stop talking about this because it makes me fall into a butter-fueled spiral if i think about it for too long
