This is going to be my last post on Tumblr for a while. My mental health is acting up, and Tumblr Discourse is contributing in its own way. I need to get away from this website.
Only fair then that I end with some Discourse. I just don’t see the problem with ace people being in our community. I don’t. All the arguments make no sense to me. The resource argument least of all - there are rich ace people who could contribute plenty to the LGBTQ+ community. We in the LGBT side of things were even more broke in the past than we are now. One reason we banded together was to collectively help ourselves out of poverty.
Instead of ace people draining our resources, I see us throwing away the contributions of people who could really help us and denying help to people who really need it. That’s not who I want this community to be.
I don’t get this “collective experiences of homophobia, transphobia, and gender based oppression that asexual people don’t share” stuff either. Ace people violate gender roles just as much as any of us.
The worst argument, though, is “cishets invading our spaces”. Have any of you ever actually met a cisgender straight person? Why on earth would they want to be one of us? They’re sitting pretty in their ivory towers of privilege, happy to oppress us to get what they want and throw us away once they get it. I have seen cis, straight allies use their privilege over me unconsciously, despite years of actively trying to get rid of it. You really think straight people *want* to climb down and get in the mud with us and throw away everything they’ve taken from us? To throw away the privilege that’s so ingrained in them that they couldn’t stop themselves from using it if they tried? I don’t see it.
If ace people want in, it’s because they need in. The “cishets” can do plenty of damage to us from the outside.
This ace discourse feels so much like the first gay man I talked to after I came out, and how he told me I “wasn’t queer enough” and smothered in “straight-passing privilege” and needed to “sit [my] ass down and listen to someone who’s really struggled.” Even the nicest people on Tumblr feel like that, with the contempt they throw at each other. Ace discourse, fandom wars, it doesn’t matter. I can’t do this right now. I’m out.
