I couldn’t resist making more pride birds today, especially after I discovered that the scientific name of the red-tailed comet is Sappho sparganurus. Sappho, you guys!! This bird is named after her!!

An old charcoal and pastel drawing. I only had the foresight to save this one questionably blurry picture of it. The analysis I wrote to accompany this was...interesting. How could I justify my choice of subjects with “meaningful” analysis? I just really wanted to draw museum specimens.

The entrancing, magical fire known as kitsune-bi was the result of the fox-spirits rubbing their tails between their fore paws until it caught fire and generated the magic that allowed them to shift form. (At least that’s what I remember reading in one collection of folktales)

Art Critic: the skull in the corner is artfully placed on the periphery of vision to symbolise the omnipresence of death, important thematically to the artist’s conception of life and mortality.

Actual Artist: aw shit, I got all this negative space, guess I’ll stick a skull there that looks pretty rad.

2AM watercolor sketch. I was thinking about a book I've been meaning to revisit called The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. One of the few novels I've come across that mentions kelpie-like creatures.
