Hereās the thing. Refusing to accept a compliment can be mildly insulting to the person youāre refusing the compliment from.
Itās like you donāt believe them or donāt respect their opinion basically.

Friend: Don't you want to have a romance?
Me: I'm good, I have romance at home.
Romance I have at home:
Nobody talks about how the "morally grey" love interest is usually just a normal guy having a bad week and everyone's acting like he committed war crimes
blonde people are so scary why cant u have a normal hair color like black or brown or green or green
OKAY OKAY OKAY so when I realized I was going to have to write a lot of space battles, I did two things. The first was put a sticky note on my laptop that said THE ENEMY'S GATE IS DOWN (which, ugh, fuck OSC into the SUN), to remind myself that direction is both 1. important, and 2. relative, and then I watched approximately a billion hours of bait ball footage in David Attenborough documentaries, which helped me write battles in which all directions are possible.
(A bait ball, btw, is when teams of predators work together to eat small fish like anchovies, sardines, or lantern fish. Tuna, seals, sharks, dolphins, etc corral the fish into a ball at the surface, and then pick them off. Sometimes rays get involved. It's like a toothy, toothy dance. Gannets and boobies dive down from above. They can go 20m down! And then sometimes a whale comes up from the deep and swallows the whole thing. It is my favourite part of any nature documentary.)
I consistently get compliments on the clarity of my space battles and my number one trick is just to stay in close third person, as tight as I can get it. I may know all or most of what's going on, but what I'm telling you is very much just what this one person is seeing and thinking -- I'm going there, I'm shooting this guy, I'm noticing that my squadmate said or did this.
(My number two trick is that I think of a lot of the action in terms of hockey games: this character is always three steps ahead of the action, that one hangs behind ready to cover an opening, and so forth. Probably any sportsball that ranges all over a field would work: basketball, soccer, etc. The point is to differentiate out how each character relates to the battlefield, which gives me a lot more ways to be specific instead of just "he's evading their shots and shooting back".)
the neurodivergent experience:
20% of the time: wowwieee!!! i love my passions and interests!!!!! they make me so happy i want to jump up and down!!!!! weee!!!!!!! :3333333333
80% of the time: this mind is a prison

In hindsight it's very insulting to be told that flunking out of college due to adhd is actually "quite common"
just like, if there's a history at your institution of disabled kids not being able to make it you realise that's your fault right. like why don't you fucking do something about it. i guess they tried to do something about it with me and it failed so they let me go. crazy. nice work. why should we try to do any better.
only 5% of people with adhd who go to college finish a degree. FUCKING. FIVE!!! PERCENT!!!!!!!!!!!
that should disgust and enrage you.
if any other demographic of students had a 95% failure rate, we would be demanding reform and studies to understand why thatās happening
when i was at my first university, trying to get accommodations for my ADHD, they just kept asking me what accommodations i wanted, and refused to answer when i would ask what was available to me. how the Hell am i supposed to know what i can have? whatās available???? also, i donāt know!!!! iām an adhd sufferer, not a fucking disability expert for the fucking college, unlike you, DISABILITY EXPERT WHO WORKS FOR THE COLLEGE.
but because the us is OBSESSED with making sure no one gets anything āāfor freeāā, she literally would not tell me what my options were until i broke down in tears and asked her why she was refusing to help me. and then she did a big sigh, like i was fucking up her entire career by *checks notes* asking the disability center in my university to help me, a disabled student
at the second uni i went to, i tried to explain to a dean that i was literally two gen eds that had nothing to do with my degree away from graduating and that i was burnt out and broke and exhausted and suicidal and i just needed to be able to finish my degree without the gen eds. and this. fucking. guy. looked me right in my face and said in the most patronizing tone he could muster āif you canāt handle it, then maybe college just isnāt for you.ā keep in mind that up until that semester, i had been an honor student who made Deanās List every semester and didnāt get below Bs. if it hadnāt been for my mental breakdown, i would have graduated cum laude, maybe even summa cum laude.
but this dean of students looked a disabled person right in the face and said well i guess you just canāt do it, short bus
Pulled these from a couple articles really quick but yeah the statistics are not kind. I remember writing a scathing essay about my issues with ADHD and college as part of an assignment for academic probation. I got back an email calling me entitled and lazy. Somehow, this thread helps me feel a lot better. I still have about a semester of school unfinished that Iām unsure if Iāll finish but⦠yeah. Makes me feel better to know itās not just me.
PSA: The Job Accommodation Network maintains a searchable database of accommodation suggestions for a wide variety of disabilities.
The full database can be accessed here and the ADHD page is here. The full database can be filtered by disability, by limitation, by work-related function, by topic, and by accommodation. Many of these accommodations are applicable to academic settings as well as the workplace.
Here are the section headers for ADHD accommodations ideas to give an overview of what the page contains - this post would become Do You Love the Color of the Accommodation if I attempted to list them all here
The ADHD page linked above also includes case examples and strategies for determining what sort of accommodations might be necessary. More broadly, the JAN website as a whole is a treasure trove of information related to the Americans with Disabilities Act and resources for both individuals and employers.
Oh fuck that's really nice, I will read it
Also just heard a podcast interview with a software developer who had good suggestions
Do you feel like ADHD is holding you back? Maybe you don't personally have ADHD but you work with folks who do and you'd like to support the
The head of disability accommodations at my college just kept ablesplaining to me that āaccommodations are to level the playing field, not give you an advantage,ā and that her job is to āprotect the schoolās rightsā rather than help disabled students. The only accommodations they would offer me were 1. extra time on tests, and 2. an alternative test-taking location - neither of which I needed. I ended up getting (most of) what I actually needed by unofficially asking the individual professors, but it should have been legally protected.
Job Accommodation Network?! Filters to find what might actually help? Shit that organization rocks.
Helping people is certainly @wholesomepostarchive right?! This makes my day.

Dang. I feel better about spending 9 years knocking about college. Admittedly, I emerged with many degrees instead of just one, but the one I needed for later work life was the one that I struggled to get.
At this point I'm pretty sure the only reason I got two master's degrees is that I was early admissions and lived at home for the whole time
I wish there was something like this when I was at uni. Even knowing that I *could* ask for help wasn't something I knew when I was 18.
I got the idea that the struggle was the point but āļø looking at that list, I was rawdogging the "executive functioning deficits" with panic and anxiety.
Fuck me. Help with Managing my Time, help with Organizing/Planning/Prioritizing (exactly what I never learned to to at school or home)?
I grieve our misused, misdirected, underutilized potential.
What we coulda done with just a little goddamm help.
Iām going to the grocery store does anyone want to sublet my apartment for 45 minutes

He's so handsome. You'll all be sorry.
Cody watched Mitch pretend to be a pile of trash and was bewitched body and soul. That seven foot tall monster curled into a ball on the floor and pretended to be literal garbage and Codyās response was, āI canāt not fuck him.ā
I remember one time I was doing an ADHD evaluation with a kid who had asked to go to the bathroom like 3 times during the 30-ish minute part of the interview where we asked his mom questions, so I knew that was his go-to excuse when bored. We get started on the WISC-V after the interview and within 30 seconds of vocab starting he asks if he can go to the bathroom, and I say:
āNo.ā
And this kid rolls his eyes because DUH and he says āWhy not?ā all cranky-styles, so I said
āBecause you donāt need to go to the bathroom, youāre bored and you need to move. If you need to move, tell me and Iāll let you know if weāre at a part of the test where we can pause. Like, for example, we can pause right now if you wanna race me around the building.ā
And this kids face fucken LIT up. We did three laps around the outside of the building and came back in and he finished like 3 subtests and asked if he could move so we got up and tried to see how high we could jump for 3 minutes and the finished the rest of the assessment with one bathroom break. And that was all it took tbh, this kid was SO capable he just needed to move and hadnāt been allowed to do so before. I also like making people mad by pointing out that I know what theyāre up to, then just giving them permission to do the thing they were sneakily trying to do in the first place. Itās like being affectionately annoying and itās part of how I connect to others.
