went to a new optometrist today wearing my squid facts ‘save our freaks’ shirt from @sarahmackattack that has a strawberry squid on it. and i wasn’t even thinking about it but the optometrist walked in and he was like ‘oh what does your shirt say’ so i showed him and he was like ‘oh that’s neat!’ and then i thought he might like to know about strawberry squid eyes since they have weird eyes and he is an optometrist and all. so i was like ‘yeah it’s actually a real kind of squid called a strawberry squid, their eyes are really cool because they have one big yellow-green one and one small blue one’ and he kind of gasped and went ‘oh my god that’s so interesting i wonder why they have that. do you know what their retina composition is like?’ and i watched as he minimized my chart on the computer and started looking up images of strawberry squid and then he googled ‘strawberry squid retina composition’ and he was like ‘sorry we’ll get to your eye exam in a moment i just really want to find out’ LMAO 10/10 optometrist experience will be returning

It's not done yet, but it's the facing, collar, and cuffs for the patchwork dressing gown I'm working on! It was less than half a metre of silk/rayon velvet that I dyed in college because the sample we did of that colour was so nice I wanted a bigger piece. (It was PRO MX fibre reactive dye in the colour Marine, and I don't have my dye sample book with me right now but I think it was at 4%. It shows up more green on some fibres and more blue on others, but is always gorgeous.)

I had no specific plans for it at the time, but eventually the perfect project came along, and there was just enough!

I've been working on this thing (intermittently, in short busts) for a few years now, and am finally done the patchwork and on to the construction. I've posted occasional updates on @vincentbriggs and will post photos there when I'm done.

I've also been filming the whole process, so I'll have a video about it up on my youtube channel eventually, but that'll be a while after it's finished because I have so so so many clips and it's going to take a horrifyingly large amount of editing.

It's based on this c. 1835 original, which is a good 50-100 years later than what I usually sew, but I like it and I wanted one.

If anyone's wondering how many triangles mine has, it's 6,957.

Since I've got the time consuming part out of the way I'm hoping I can get the construction done before winter officially ends.

Edit: Why does everyone think I had a bad time working on the triangles?? I loved working on them, it was so satisfying to put lots of little bits of colour together. The reason I worked on it intermittently is because I could not put it down once I got working on it, and would work on it all day for several days straight until I was very tired and sore, and then I had to put it away to stop myself, and then I'd forget about it for a few months.

Also, they're machine sewn. Most of the actual garment construction will be by hand, but the patchwork is all by machine.

For those who don't know, for most of the history of written language existing, we've taught people to read by having them sound out words. (Yes, this goes for logographic writing systems too, at least to some degree.)

In the 70s, a vibes-based and deeply flawed method was developed. It has been infesting US public schools ever since despite being completely debunked by subsequent research.

The reasons this crap is so insidious are twofold:

First, the vibes are right. The method sounds a lot like how people who taught themselves to read at 2 describe the feeling of the experience. The description Just Makes Sense when thinking about how reading feels to a highly literate adult who knows what it's like to read now but doesn't actually remember much about learning.

Second, the method is fast. Little kids just starting to learn make quick gains.

And then they plateau.

Forever.

Current research shows that this wishy-washy "Teach both!" "Multiple learning styles!" shit is a lie. If you provide both options, kids pick the one that feels easier in the moment, not the one that produces long-term skill building. Real shit takes effort, dudes. Effort is exhausting.

When you offer both, kids fail to get good at reading. Period.

This trash caused me problems in the 80s, but it really got famous during lockdown when a lot of parents noticed how shit their kids' education was and this famous podcast blew the lid off the whole thing.

second of all because as romantic and sappy as they are, these two men do not care about performing Correct Wedding, they care about putting rings on fingers and getting to make out in front of their friends and family. they don't have to justify or seek validation for their relationship beyond signing the paperwork.

third of all because it's funny if everyone roasts them about their kinda shit wedding for the rest of eternity
