One time a friend told me that if she wanted to have a chill night she would come to me and ask for tea and a book to read. I didn’t like tea at the time, but I always made sure my cupboards had them in case she needed a quiet night. One time I told my boss that I loved oranges, but couldn’t peel them because of my nails. For a year he made sure to peel me one at least once a week. Once my friends gave me a made up superlative of “most likely to have a pen they could borrow” and ever since I’ve made sure I always carry a pen with me. A long time ago, my high school librarian told me that no one would care what my grade in my sophomore chemistry class was if I’m bringing them doughnuts and asking them about their day.

Sometimes friendship is about carrying pens and peeling oranges. But the point is, surrounding yourself with people who you want to do the little things for. The point of it all is bringing in the doughnuts because you’ve found the people who deserve the doughnuts.

My family pokes fun at me for being a walking emergency preparedness kit, but they know that if they need a painkiller, bandage, hair tie, pen, safety pin, etc I will most likely have one readily available for them. Honestly it's so gratifying for me every time. Oh, I can quickly and easily fix your problem and make your life a little bit better? Yay!

I was talking yesterday about how I should probably change the skin colour of a character in a not-yet-written book, because that character is a large, aggressive dragon-shifter and I was worried about her being read with unintentional and offensive subtext.

I haven't gotten my hands on Writing the Other yet (it's still in the mail!) but from reading my way through these articles and watching the Princess Weekes video, I now understand that 'white-ifying' a character you're worried about is a lazy and cowardly solution. so, if I do ever finish the book Eres loses Everything, I'll keep her as is, do my best to be thoughtful, and hire a sensitivity reader to pick out any blind spots.

The blog @creatingblackcharacters is about this topic and has a ton of helpful information, with several lessons in her pinned post on topics like writing about and drawing Black hairstyles, racist stereotypes to be aware of/avoid, AAVE, and more. I like that her content covers both written and artistic portrayals of Black characters, with examples (many from popular media) of both what to avoid and what to emulate. She also answers some asks about people's written and illustrated characters, and she posts/reblogs a lot of Black character art, all of which I've found helpful for seeing how Black characters can be written/illustrated well in lots of different contexts.

Some more resources for writing Black characters well, which can be helpful even when what you're writing is fanfic! It also helps that Mensah, Amena, Iris, and Seth are all great examples of well-written Black characters. I love how Martha Wells describes them so it's clear to us that they're Black without ever actually using that word in the far-future sci-fi setting.
