The Old Gods

But where can you find the Gods now? Humanity has long since moved on from going to temples and praying for a good harvest or for more rain. So, where did all of the gods go?

Do they wait at the temples still while watching the world move on without them?

Do they one day realize how many years have gone by without anybody praying to them or bringing an offering?

Are they starting to fade from consciousness all while desperately trying to hang onto our world that has forgotten them?

Trying to avoid a fate worse than death because at least someone will mourn for you and remember you if you die?

What if instead they have simply changed their domains of power? They as well have adapted to the constant rapid change of humanity. You are still being followed and watched by the Old Gods. They have continued to help us even if most of us no longer believe in them. Nowadays, you don’t have to go to temples and give offerings in order to honor them. They aren’t there anymore. If you look around you you are more likely to find them. Pay attention to the small things in life and you will see them.

You will see Poseidon in a bath after a long day. In the way of the water being the perfect temperature and all of the tensed up muscles relaxing. Or you will find him in the way a cold shower wakes you up and offers the perfect refreshment in summer. Maybe you can hear his voice in the rain falling against a window and in the low rumbling of an incoming wave.

There will also be Athena and Thoth helping you study for your test and keeping your focus on the work. They are the seemingly random moments of brightness during an exam that offer a snippet of knowledge needed to get the higher grade. You can find them in the joy of learning something new and in reading a good book. Their voices being the rustling of pages being turned and the scraping sound of a pen on paper.

Aphrodite and Freya will be in the confidence you feel while wearing a nice outfit. They help you ask out the person you like and they are there to support you after heartbreak. You loving yourself and your body is one of the greatest offerings you could give them.

The fierce need to protect others when they can’t is Bastet lending you her strength. She shows you the fulfillment that comes with standing up for what’s right and defending your opinion. The cat that seems to randomly show up near you is her protecting you. When the need to pet a cat comes over you it is her asking for an offering of love and care.

The way music is your solace and your mood booster is where you find Apollo. You can feel his caress during a song that seems to wash over and engulf you. His voice being the people busking on the streets and a mother singing to her child. He is there for you with the one song that helps you heal mentally.

Raking in the sun and feeling its warmth spread through you is Ra making sure you have a positive mindset. Feeling the rays of sun hitting your skin and enjoying it is you showing him your love and appreciation. The freckles that come out of nowhere and the tan that comes with them is his gratitude in return. He takes care of you when you forget to put on sunscreen due to stress by encouraging only a tan not a burn.

You can find the Gods all around us. Maybe it is time to start giving them small offerings again. Taking care of ourselves and of our surroundings would already be a start. Leaving small presents like pearls and homemade food for them is also a way to show them honor.

They never abandoned us so maybe now we shouldn’t continue to do it either.

vii. she knew well how to alchemize distress into pleasure, so when his eyes drifted far from her face and his tongue dulled his declarations of love, she pretended not to realize. they left minoa behind, and she let her heart be eroded by the crash of the waves against the ship.

viii. it seemed to her that day that the princess was birthed from the sea as well: the storm that came was sudden and fierce in its rage, desperate to claim lives for the depths of the sea. she watched the princess disappear under the violent waves, only to resurface on the shores of amathous, her hair and face scrubbed clean with salt.

ix. her thoughts under the water had been fervent, almost joyous: at last they have come for me, at last i might slip away. the storm was unforgiving and wild, and she was alone in the dark of the sea. she closed her eyes and did not kick. for a few endless moments, she felt at peace—then the world rushed up to greet her anew, with sand coating her hair and a terrible pain in her shoulder.

x. a seaborn woman knew what others did not: the ocean was not a cruel and ungoverned world to bury the dark secrets of men. it was not a watery grave nor a place of absolution. it was a crucible for life, the birthplace of love itself. and above all, the sea was a mirror. its glassy surface reflected the sins of land and sky, and it buried only what it wished to bury; the rest would be delivered in time. she looked upon the face of the princess, and her heart said: this pain was born of men’s sin, and it ends here. so she stepped forward.

xi. the woman was so beautiful that ariadne might have thought she was dreaming, if not for the grounding of her pain and the sound of the waves. distantly she heard the call of her name, but she could not answer for having been overcome with a sense of longing, belonging. she could see calm waters in this woman’s eyes, and she was adorned with strings of beautiful pearls, woven through her curls, hanging from her throat. ariadne felt a sweet ache in her chest and wondered where that feeling had been all her life.

xii. aphrodite knew beauty and she knew love, whether it was in its bare infancy or of such a great age that it would soon fade from the mortal world. there was fleeting beauty and love extinguished too soon; there was love that spanned decades and beauty in the thousand-wrinkled faces of a woman who lived to see new generations. civilizations had risen and fallen, and rise and fall they would again, but aphrodite did not think she would be as moved then as she was by the princess ariadne—salt-covered and wounded but whole, whole in a way that she couldn’t stand to see that glory-hungry athenian wear away, not when the whole world had already tried so desperately.

xx. aphrodite watched and waited for her to steady herself. her dark hair was tangled, her dress had torn at the breast, and blood dripped slowly from the cut on her arm, but there was a look on her face that suggested rebirth, something blooming from the dark of the sea. somehow, she knew the woman would not leave.

You’re the only other person I’ve met in my adult life who uses the touch-point/dots superimposed on numbers method to count! I learned it in kindergarten and I still use it to this day!

i remember my mom being frustrated with this system. she was like “no don’t count the dots that’s stupid just remember that nine is nine” and i was like “that literally makes no sense bc ‘nine’ is just a word, and has no numerical meaning inside my head” (except in 1st grade terms, which basically came out to “but i caaaaan’t”)

I was never taught this, but my 6th-grade-friend’s younger brother was, and I happened to see it on his math homework one day when I was over at her house and I didn’t really read it but the next day I was trying to add 5 to something and used that and it was cool, so now I use this system for 3 and 5, but not for anything else because I can’t remember the patterns for any other digit.

For starters, if you don’t know who Crowley was (no, not the Supernatural dude), he was a 1900s occultist who coined a portion of what modern witchcraft uses today, such as the word “magick” which he, although did not ‘invent’, popularised. (you’ll learn why I denounce that term and try to educate people who use it in a second). He was, in a nutshell, everything modern society hates. Racist, antisemitic, sexist, you name it and Crowley was it.

Crowley wrote several books about the occult, some of them having slightly useful information and still are referenced today, but his occult books are not what I intend to talk about. Little known to most, Crowley wrote an essay entitled “The Jewish Problem”, that title is enough of a disgrace, but what is actually IN the writing is atrocious, which I will be going over in a second. In other writing, he refers to Jewish people as “parasites”, “a barbarous race”, talks about how Jewish people are their bad stereotypes, among other things. This article does a wonderful job of compiling some of his worst quotes and explaining how racist he really is, as well as explaining some of the undertones of the quotes.

“Christians and other troglodytes — but most especially the parasites of man, the Jews (The New Comment on Liber AL, III:11)“

“the Jews were an entirely barbarous race, incapable of any spiritual pursuit. (preface to 777, printed in The Equinox, Vol. 1, No. 8)”

“A similar case is presented by the Jew, who really does only too often possess the bad qualities for which he is disliked (Confessions, chapter 54)“

“But in America, the Christian elements have been removed so that wealthy Jews may reach the summit of masonry. (Confessions, chapter 72)“

“It has been said that every nation has the government which it deserves. I would add, the type of Jew which it deserves. (Confessions, chapter 61)“

“the Jews are a critically important factor in the social and economic problems of the day (Confessions, chapter 75)“

Anyway, he also used to throw slurs at his Jewish friend Victor Neuburg and admitted to being interested in fascism multiple times.

As for quotes from The Jewish Problem:

“Israel has corrupted the world, whether by conquest, by conversion, or by conspiracy. The Jew has eaten his way into everything.”

“The Jew, living so long on sufferance, by subterfuge, servility, and self-effacement, has taught his tricks to the whole world.“

And many, many, many more.

Some of his comments on other groups of people:

About Chinese people: “One cannot fraternize with the Chinese of the lower classes; one must treat them with absolute contempt and callousness“ / “The Chinese does not respect the white man as the Indian does — for his possession of high moral qualities.“

About Mexican people: “Neither the coyotes nor the turkey-buzzards will touch a dead Mexican. His flesh has been too thoroughly impregnated with chillies and other pungent condiments.”

About black people: “Where Islam and Christianity meet in open competition, as in some parts of Africa, it is found that only the lowest type of Negro, such as is accustomed to arrange matters with conscience by hanging a rag on a piece of stick, accepts Christianity”

About Indian people: “I am not fond of Benaglis at the best and he as the worst specimen of his race I have ever seen. He was fat and oily, with small piglike treacherous eyes.”

Crowley also heavily used the term “black magic” in reference to the “dark art” types of witchcraft, this term is now considered racist by a good portion of the community. Not to mention he was also a regular user of the N slur! I’m talking hard-R.

He was also heavily misogynistic and sexist, as if the dude wasn’t enough of a crapshoot. Here is a list of all the gross, sexist things he’s said!

Anyway,

I never much liked the usage of magic with a K to start with, but I’ve been learning more and more about AC as time has passed, I’ve started denouncing it entirely and educating people about it’s connections to him as best as I can, most people have no idea how awful he is. It’s scary to think that someone so despicable is still heavily referenced and worshiped in the Occult community, so I wanted to finally make this post. I am asked a lot about it and why I hate the term “magick” so much, now you all know. I hope you will consider using the terms witchcraft, or even just magic rather than adding the K at the end, because we all know what the K stands for now, and who it represents. This is not even the beginning of how awful he was, there is so much more that can be dug up. I encourage you to do it, research him and understand how absolutely terrible he was. Please.

I do know genuinely lovely people who are into such things but so many of them model themselves after Crowley etc and think what they’re doing is cool and edgy. Firstly magic isn’t meant to be cool, it’s not a game. But also there’s nothing edgy about racism etc. O.o I don’t know, I always liked the look of ‘magick’ but now I understand that the insinuations are related to a racist edgelord who wanted to make himself seem elitist, no thanks. This would also explain why I’ve been having creepy dreams with him involved. O.o

Yeah… I was reading up on Crowley for writing research, as I’ve been wanting to get some details right for a project. Anyway, just the historical foreword to his Book IV sent up about a dozen red flags, which it seemed as if the guest writer was attempting to gloss over—I just got a huge sense that there was much “in between the lines” that actually might make people less excited to read a Crowley book, so it couldn’t get published in one.

Lo and behold, a few minutes of independent research later, I found out that he tended to go through women like tissue paper, but at one point was married to one Rose Edith Kelly. She was who from which he received much of his guidance for The Book of the Law—she would go into a trance via ritual and would dictate knowledge for him. This was a role he often had women in his life fulfill—he would typically draw them into his circle, ply them with substances and with his noteworthy charisma, and before long, they would start spouting secret knowledge on his behalf, often enduring some very questionable conditions. Anyway, Rose and him had two children, and it is said she developed a drinking problem, but it is also fact he committed her to an asylum for “alcohol dementia” in her thirties a couple years after their divorce. Further research uncovered another noteworthy name: Mary Desti, who it seems Crowley met the same year he had Rose committed. She was the “seer” who revealed much of his seminal Book IV. Her son, the playwright Preston Sturges, was none-too-happy to recount that in her induced trances, if she stepped out of line in any way, including if she would start a sentence with “I”, Crowley would slice open her arm with a penknife. Some may start to wonder less why Rose started to drink. Mary would later leave Crowley as well, and Crowley would head over to another mistress, and the train of the world’s fascination with him would keep rolling.

I could go on for ages; this is an exceedingly small sample of how he treated those nearest and “dearest” to him. It honestly put me off using the term “magick” in my project and deeply put me off using many other elements of his work. The sanitized elements that trickled down and insinuated themselves into later traditions… I suspect there is good reason those survived, but lionizing Crowley himself is not an act I think I could look at without some suspicion.

✊ 36 Tisha B’Av actions

This Tisha B’Av, a Jewish day of mourning, we will gather to collectively mourn the tragedies happening today to immigrants in our country.

Organized by T’ruah, Bend the Arc, NCJW, the RAC, J Street, HIAS, and Torah Trumps Hate in response to a call for action by United We Dream, the largest immigrant youth-led network in the country: There are over 36 Tisha B’Av vigils currently planned around the country on August 10-11. Find your local event here, plus information on how to host an event in your community.

Our action together is working: After public pressure and organizing, Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe put on hold plans to use Fort Sill as a detention camp for over 1,600 migrant children.

This Tisha B’Av, we see destruction, cruelty, and senseless hatred in the United States: kids in cages, separated families, human beings being held in camps with inhumane living conditions.
