Since this is relevant to this blog (...in a way, shhh), I wanted to add something to this.
The thing with webcomics is that... The most memorable ones are the ones made by independant creators.
There is absolutely a problem between looking at the work of tens of hundreds of people, working full time on said work, and expecting the work of a small time creator to be able to be at that same level of quality. However, the work of professional teams is also never going to be on the same level of originality and creativity that an independent creator's is going to be.
Sure, the art may be a lot more polished, but who here considers the "Batman from Webtoon" comic a standout, memorable comic? Hell, I didn't even know it was a thing. The latest Marvel, DC, Disney, IDW, etc etc comics haven't been as timeless or as memorable lately. That's not to say that they're bad, far from it! There are some great comics being published from these houses! But, compare these to comics like:
Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson (Not a webcomic, but here as a comparison. It was serialized in newspapers and made by just one person, as was the case with many other newspaper published comics.)
One Punch Man by ONE (This is a web comic that was originally only in Japanese... Now, the comic and its TV series are available in many many many more countries!)
Homestuck by Andrew Hussie (Do I need to even mention how well known this comic is? Of course, not as well known outside of the internet as others but still very influential)
XKCD by Randall Munroe (Again, more internet oriented in its reach, but still huge, and it's just stick figures!)
These are all just comics I could think of off the top of my head, so there are probably a lot more that I just can't think of at this point. These are also (mostly) influential in English speaking spaces, there are surely many many more that dominate the field in other spheres, like, for example the Brave Comic Series by Yellow Book, which is HUGE in Taiwan, but completely unheard of over here! (yeeah it's a shameless self plug but w/e
My point is, is that it doesn't matter whether your comic is big and shiny or small and comprised of stick figures. It's important as it is! It is supremely disheartening to know that Webtoons is going to have more and more professional series on it, but that shouldn't push you to stop creating/not even start! Without independant creators, the webcomic scene wouldn't be anywhere near what it is today.
Your work matters, and so do you.
