Ability analysis on Tanizaki please~
Okay!
(Oh yeah this guy also doesn’t have the introduction ability panel)
Tanizaki Junichirou, sales clerk at ADA, whose Ability is Light Snow. With Light Snow, Tanizaki can project visual illusion to his surroundings.
Tanizaki never really goes to the battlefield unless forced or ambushed, so in battle his prowess aren’t as shown as to his scouting ability. With Light Snow, Tanizaki can scout to enemy hideout undetected. This makes him a very good spy/scout and his Ability is also incredible at support. In battle, he can hide his comrade’s true position and create an illusion that will fool enemies, thus creating opportunity for his comrade to attack the defenseless enemy.
Although not suited for offense, in battle Tanizaki’s support is tremendous. Any mere seconds of shock from the enemy can turn the tide of battles. His Ability can also help his comrades to escape, at least take a breather for a few seconds, or even saving/protecting someone else.
While his illusion is a great source of shock, it’s effect became less effective the more time he uses it. Just like magician’s trick, if it’s used enough times someone can uncover the trick. Also, while he can change his surroundings, Tanizaki can’t change reality. So while he can hide his comrades and himself, if the enemy attacked them with wide barrage of attack like Kajii’s bombs, Chuuya’s hail of bullets, and Akutagawa’s relentless spikes of Rashoumon, then his comrades would get hit nonetheless.
Tanizaki’s Ability is more suited for control. Meaning just like when he changed the environment so that a truck hit just where he needed it, he can fool the enemy into walking to where he wants them to be. Imagine if Tanizaki hide a mountain of explosives in one place and then his enemy, unaware of the bomb, will walk right to the range of explosion and Tanizaki can activate it from safe place. He can even make his enemy jump off a cliff, thinking there is a road there. Or he can hide the more frail people like Lucy and when the enemy walks by unaware of Lucy waiting for them, Lucy can drag them to her room for ambush.
Even so, Tanizaki’s Ability aren’t that powerful. While Tanizaki can fool the enemy’s sight, he can’t hide anything else. If the enemy possess enhanced senses like Atsushi or Jouno, they can depend on their other senses to track the true whereabouts of him and his comrade (sniffing them out, hearing any whispers or footsteps, etc).
No to mention that while Tanizaki can also fool electronic equipment such as camera, he can’t fool thermal detectors.
But this only means his Ability is severely limited against opponents that knows about him. Against people that know nothing, his Ability is super great.
Other than that, Hirotsu has commented that Tanizaki’s Ability is really suited for assassination. This is true, since assassination if succeeded will only happen once and the target won’t know anything about Tanizaki’s Ability once they are dead. He can sneak into the target’s home and unseen by the bodyguards, goes in for the kill.
Tanizaki is shown to be proficient with a blade. He can fight with it, although not to the extent of more experienced fighter like Kunikida. This, along with his Ability, will make it easier for him escape dangerous situations on his own.
Tanizaki’s greatest enemy will be Atsushi and Jouno, who can use their other senses to feel the world around them. He is also weak against enemies that can use wide range of attack such as Chuuya, Kunikida (with his bombs and maybe he can create a thermal visor too?), Akutagawa, and Kajii. He is extremely good against enemies that is better fighting one-on-one like Kyouka, Kenji, Fitzgerald, Fukuzawa, Mori, Hirotsu, and the others (he doesn’t need to defeat them. He just has to stall for time or escapes with his life). If Tanizaki is careful, maybe he can creates illusions woven to the environment that doesn’t touch Dazai and triggered his nullification.
For Tanizaki, his greatest source of strength is surprise and his weakness is that he can only surprise the enemy so many times before his tricks is used up. Since his illusion is only visual, he can’t actually harm his enemies with his illusion directly but he can do harm indirectly by creating an environment with his illusion that will takes things in his favor. That’s all I can say about Tanizaki!
I do feel the need to point out that the illusions of himself do carry mass. If you re-watch his fight against the black lizard closely and keep track of which Tanizaki is the "real" one it shifts. The original Tanizaki(the one who reveals himself and attempts to slit Gin's threat) is not the same Tanizaki who is later pushed into and dents a wall and later continues the fight as the protagonist of that fight. He himself describes his illusion as being transposed on to a digital space but the Tanizaki illusion that destroys the wall wouldn't have been able to if he isn't able to switch which one is the "original" Tanizaki or if they all had mass. If you re-watch all of his fight scenes(which I have) it makes less if you keep in mind his own description of his ability but if you look at his style of fighting it makes more sense if he can switch between which tanizaki illusion is him
