What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

I feel the situation with Alexandra is difficult. On the one hand they clearly don't want to announce anything which is par for the course and understandable and there's numerous conversations to be had about scrutiny of women's bodies. On the other, it's a choice to go to the paddock in the first place, but also to be seen. Trying to explain to my mum that the place we are staying in is literally so safe and old fashioned there is no need for my nana to close the door. Her house is also a sauna and she needs the fresh air. Please remember my mum has stayed here multiple times.

While I love my family, they are driving me nuts. Mum needs to stop lecturing people and remember not everyone is like her, my aunt has got so opinionated but I wish it were better informed and my nana has got a memory literally like a sieve and is so dramatic I see where the rest of my family get it from.
