Some rational thoughts about The Prequel after initial shock

CMP is a baby baby baby production company that currently has done nothing

There is no way Renee Reiff who is loudly promoting the need for LGBTQ+ writers in Holywood would sign on to this baby production company from DC without some guarantee of quality LGBTQ+ content with representation at all levels of production

I imagine there will be a lack of LGBTQ+ rep in this prequel as it is set in the 60s/70s so I can only guess there will be more coming down the pipeline

CMP getting the rights to produce a spn prequel is massive. This could be a test for getting Team Free Will in future if they have been granted spn rights for this.

Jensen said right there in the article “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story.” FIRST people, this is a man with a plan. 

He is still so invested in Dean “I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.” His motivation for this is literally that Dean would have wanted to know more about his parents. This is not a man who is done with Dean Winchester.

This is maybe tinhatting but after filming the ending we got, Jensen went and started his own production company and the first member of staff announced is Renee Reiff who has a history of doing lots of LGBTQ+ work. That doesn’t seem to be a coincidence. The man who held a silence for months, barely spoke about the finale but would wax lyrical about 15x18 at any opportunity. I can’t help but think Destiel and his hope for Destiel in some continuation helped power that decision.

Okay okay. I’m so excited right now. I know some people are going to be crabby because we want a continuation with our boys and we really just do not like John Winchester for the most part… however… here’s my counter. 

1) This means CMP is able to test the waters in the SPN universe. They were given the rights to play around a little bit with the characters. Yes, not THE main characters, but characters nonetheless. So — getting the rights to SPN in one way or another. 

2) Along the same lines, to me this is testing. This is ‘how well can you do with a SPN story before we give you the pop culture lead characters everyone has a pulse on’.

3) As @youchangedmedean​ pointed out, in the article, Jackles is quoted as saying “the first story we wanted to tell” which makes it sound like they got others in the brainstorming session. 

4) It will bring back some SPN alumn which is fantastic. 

5) From a storytelling perspective, it’s going to help expand the universe. We only got the TINIEST peak into their lives. We know John was a Vietnam Marine (a duty that caused a lot of trauma in a generation of men), thought his father left, has no knowledge of the occult or supernatural, and yadda yadda. We know Mary came from a long line of hunters and has a hunting past. Do you know how awesome it’s going to be seeing more of her and her family and what they did and their priorities — and what knowledge they have? The Winchester side is tied to the Men of Letters but we can explore the Campbell side as well. But ALL OF THIS TO SAY: If Jackles is really like saying there will be more stories in this universe, then this is going to help expand that, add more lore to it, add more things to play with for an eventual continuation. 

So in conclusion:  We know he is looking at a ‘reboot’ (continuation, bless him), and he’s always wanted to do Wayward Sisters. So — my thing is basically this is the first of what will probably be at least three or four stories he’s looking to do in this “universe”. He’s helping to expand it. I know the fandom isn’t a big fan of John but this is a John pre-Mary’s death, pre show. 

He’s expanding this story. He’s getting rights to SPN. This is like a test run because he’s still a smol producing company — so yeah.

Yeah I know the concept of the prequel series is not as appealing as the predicted sequel series. and like i’m hoping we don’t get a John winchester redemption arc bc he doesn’t deserve that...

but Mr. Jensen Ackles surely knows I cannot resist the pull of Supernatural and therefore I will be watching no matter what and hopefully in his, danneel’s, and Robbie’s hands it’ll still be interesting... I have hope? I hope I'm not wrong to have that hope. maybe they’ll bring in some other characters who would have been alive at the time to make it better (would kill for rowena and Crowley to come back pls my loves)

Okay so for people asking if this is real, yes it is. It’s from the same day we got this picture, when Misha (and Jensen apparently) visited Suzanne (you might know her as Chico) who used to handle PR and social media for SPN (as well as several other CW shows) at the hospital right after her baby girl was born. Jensen’s ear looks weird in the pic because the person who shared it edited the patient board behind Jensen to remove confidential infos. You’re welcome ;)
