Okay because it's topical
In college I was walking home throught the library and I saw a flier on the wall for a class called "the American Musical"
And I thought WOW! I don't have room in my courseload, but I should audit that!
And I kept reading and it said taught by Miriam Ellis
And I thought WOW! My favorite French teacher! No way! This is gonna be awesome!
And I kept reading and it said and John Dizikes
And I thought WOW! He has buildings named after him! This is gonna be a big deal!
And I kept reading and it said and Tom Lehrer
And I didn't think WOW! I thought BUH!!! And I thought no.... unless...? And either way I was going to be at that class
So I left the library in this sort of dazed cloud of euphoria, and at roughly the same moment this older gentleman was puttering out towards his car, wearing a Greek Fisherman's Cap. And at that point in my life I was deeply into Greek Fisherman's Caps and, as I mentioned, feeling unwonted beneficence towards all mankind. So I was like "hey man! I love your hat!"
And he said "yours too! Very Fiddler in the Roof. " And ambled off singing "If I were a Rich Man"
And I thought WOW! What a fun guy! Santa Cruz people amirite? And tomorrow I get to meet Tom Lehrer!
And so the next day I go to the class and would you know it? The sweet older gentleman from the library is there too, sitting in one of the desks. I wave at him, he waves at me, and I look around wondering if I'm gonna recognize Tom Lehrer when he walks in. But the room fills up with students and no one I think could be him -
And then my buddy from last night gets up and starts teaching the class
