Really, it was Lena’s fault. She’d been the one to demand a video when Eddie had finally caved and sent an SOS to the group chat asking if anyone was willing to trade.

“Is anyone interested in trading jerseys with me? Preferably for a smaller size,” Eddie had said because knowing his coworkers, one of them would’ve been a smart ass and gave him an even bigger size. “I ordered an XL because I’m usually a XL but… the way it fits makes me look like I’m fucking one of the players.”

Eddie wasn't trying to go viral. He just wanted to trade his jersey. But then something called Booktok got involved.

“Chimney says that Eddie’s been moping,” Maddie said airly as she fixed herself some breakfast. 

He vaguely remembered a Chimney on the roster when Buck had maybe googled Eddie’s name after he couldn’t sleep. If it was because he couldn’t stop thinking about the way Eddie’s hands curved over the slope of his waist, then that was between him and his search engine. 

“Since when have you been talking to a hockey goalie?” 

“Since you and the hockey power forward went and drunkenly made out on the dance floor,” Maddie said as she settled a plate of breakfast in front of him. “Eat.”

Eddie leaves the 118. Two weeks later, Buck dies in a warehouse fire while Eddie and Chris watch the news coverage. That night, Eddie goes to bed, begging the universe for a second chance.

Eddie wakes up the next morning to find out that it's the day before he starts at the 118 - August 5th, 2018.

Buck dies and instead of letting Eddie mourn, the universe throws him three and a half years into the past to get it right this time.

I’ll Eat You Instead of Chocolate (You’re Sweeter Anyhow)

When the 118 is called to deal with a "dog" that ended up in someone's house, Buck sustains a bite. It's fine, in fact it healed really quickly, and he doesn't see a need to make any fuss.

The fact that he's craving raw meat, wants to be taken on a walk, and has a crazy strong sense of smell now are completely unrelated. Definitely. For sure.

Where the Light Enters

There's a beat of silence. A smile blossoms on Buck's face. It starts with a twitch at the corner of his mouth, then spreads inwards. He purses his lips, almost like he's trying to contain it, then gives up and lets it bloom into a brilliant smirk, crooked and devastating on his warm lips. He cracks open one eye, the left one. The smirk creases his birthmark. It's the same shade of pink as his lips, the same color as the lightning scar.

"Oh yeah?"

Eddie clears his throat and frees his own sandwich from its plastic prison. "Eat so you don't collapse. Save us both the trouble."

He can still feel Buck's eyes on him. "I don't break that easily."

Chris is 800 miles away, and Eddie's house feels emptier than ever. As always, Buck is right there, ready to have his back, to catch him without hesitation if he falls. This is familiar, this is normal, this is the way they've always been. This is fine, until it isn't. Until Eddie finds himself drawn to Buck in ways he never expected—ways that might not be so new at all.

It's Eddie centric and looks at his trauma (religious and otherwise) and it made me cry several times so you know it's good lmao

“Eddie? What’s wrong? There’s no way I missed something, look, we went over everything thrice—” Oh, god, Buck has retrieved his clipboard from wherever in Eddie’s house he’d stashed it last time. He’s waving it around as he speaks. “Information about my spouse,” Eddie says blankly. Buck looks confused. He flips through the pages on his clipboard. “No, look, we definitely-” “Not Shannon,” Eddie interrupts. “My current spouse.” Buck, understandably, looks even more confused. Then he seems to actually comprehend what Eddie is saying, and he shoots him a devastated look. “You’re- you’re married? When? To whom?” “I… I didn’t know I was married. I don’t. I don’t think I am? But they seem to think I am. And they think…” Eddie pauses. Wets his lips. “I think… I think they think I’m married to you.”

Buck and Eddie get married the night of Chimney's bachelor party. Buck and Eddie do not know they got married the night of Chimney's birthday party. At least, they don't until months later, when Chris' new school asks Eddie for documentation of his spouse: one Mr. Buck Diaz.

And- oh, maybe Maddie had been getting married? “Were you marrying tall dark and handsome down there?”

Maddie and the stranger blink, share a shocked look and both say, “No. We were not getting married.”

But- he remembers the man at the end of the bed in an olive green suit. He remembers the man smiling and laughing with him, coaxing him onto the dance floor. Which means..

“Oh, my god,” Buck blurts out, staring in wide eyed shock. “Holy fuck. We were getting married! That’s why you’ve been at my bedside all night! I can’t believe I scored you and I don’t remember!”

OR

Buck gets hurt at Chim & Maddie’s wedding, earning some temporary amnesia and thinks he was marrying Eddie. The doctor advises they let him believe it. Eddie is stressed from day one

Buck is fucking frozen. His mouth is dry, and his brain is blank except for oh no, oh fuckreverberating in his frontal lobe. He can’t answer. He feels the pressure against the metaphorical closet door, the hinges creaking against the weight of the boxes crashing down.

“Are those… hearing aids?” He registers Eddie's voice through the ringing in his ears.

It takes him a moment before he can finally whisper it out. He feels his head nod against his will.

“Yeah.”

The door gives out.

or: how a conversation about tardigrades results in buck grappling with a disability he's suppressed, getting hearing aids, and realizing that the family he craves has been there for him all along. in that order.

a straight guy and an ally walk into a bar…

He saw what Tommy must have seen, Buck who was so obviously jealous of them. Buck who always defaulted to Eddie’s side. Buck who asked Tommy to move in despite wanting Eddie to go to the stupid basketball game with him a few hours earlier.
