everything (nothing) has changed

After Eddie gets shot, Buck confesses his love. From there, things get a little out of hand.

Buck breathes for a moment, then sets his shoulders. "Eddie, there's something I have to tell you."

"Do you?" Eddie asks flatly, still alarmed and doing his best to hide it. "I would've never guessed."

Buck swallows. "Eddie, I love you."

"Are you softening the blow, or buttering me up? Because, I've got to tell you, I'm still very worried regardless," Eddie tells him.

"No, you don't understand. I love you. I'm currently in love with you," Buck says as evenly as possible, and even then, his voice wobbles precariously there for a moment. He exhales. "You don't have to worry about it, though, because I've processed it and decided to—to find relief in telling you before moving on and moving forward."

Eddie stares at him. No response at all.

Well, at least he's not freaking out.

“Does this story have a point?” Eddie questioned, Lena narrowing her eyes at him.

“This guy, my sort of friend—what if he could watch Chris for you?”

Eddie furrowed his brows together. “You want me to leave my kid who’s halfway across the country with some—stranger?”

“It beats having him sent home to your parents, right?”

Well, she had a point there.

Eddie shook his head, overwhelmed with his thoughts.

“Look, I appreciate it Bosko, but I just—I don’t know. This is my kid we’re talking about.”

“I know that, and I know how much you love him. Hell, you’ve sent me ten plus emails when I was watching him for you.”

Eddie looked to where there was a line coming out of their commanders office. He turned to Lena, giving his full attention.

“Alright, tell me about this friend of yours.”

The one where Eddie’s in the army, Shannon gives up her rights to Chris, and Eddie needs a babysitter. Good thing Lena knows Buck, the guy having nothing better to do than help babysit until Eddie gets back. Eddie would come home, and he would leave; it wasn’t like they were going to build some lifetime friendship or anything.

The Best Lie is a Truth (My Best Mask is My Face)

The Buckleys are celebrating their 50th Anniversary, and Maddie and Buck are both expected to come. To take the heat off Maddie, Buck impulsively blurts out that he's seeing someone new.

Obviously, there's only one solution: bring Eddie as his fake boyfriend, pretend to be in love with him, and survive the weekend with minimal bloodshed. No problem, except for the, uh. "Pretend" part.

I’ll Eat You Instead of Chocolate (You’re Sweeter Anyhow)

When the 118 is called to deal with a "dog" that ended up in someone's house, Buck sustains a bite. It's fine, in fact it healed really quickly, and he doesn't see a need to make any fuss.

The fact that he's craving raw meat, wants to be taken on a walk, and has a crazy strong sense of smell now are completely unrelated. Definitely. For sure.

And- oh, maybe Maddie had been getting married? “Were you marrying tall dark and handsome down there?”

Maddie and the stranger blink, share a shocked look and both say, “No. We were not getting married.”

But- he remembers the man at the end of the bed in an olive green suit. He remembers the man smiling and laughing with him, coaxing him onto the dance floor. Which means..

“Oh, my god,” Buck blurts out, staring in wide eyed shock. “Holy fuck. We were getting married! That’s why you’ve been at my bedside all night! I can’t believe I scored you and I don’t remember!”

OR

Buck gets hurt at Chim & Maddie’s wedding, earning some temporary amnesia and thinks he was marrying Eddie. The doctor advises they let him believe it. Eddie is stressed from day one

Eddie frowned. "So basically, we'd be boyfriends, without benefits?"

"Yes!" Buck snapped his fingers. "Like platonic boyfriends! We'd get all the benefits of a relationship and none of the heartbreak."

And maybe Eddie had finally lost his mind, or maybe it was from all the alcohol clouding his judgment, but the idea of it didn't sound half as crazy as it should have. 

*** After Buck’s and Eddie’s dates both end with disasters – proving once again that maybe dating just wasn’t meant for them – they decide to simply settle for each other. If there was one person in the world they'd ever trust with their hearts, it was each other. And who was a better person to date other than your very own best friend?
