OCEAN SAGA

The saga begins with Storm.

Odysseus and his crew set sail to Ithaca, and get caught in a violent storm. They find a floating island, which Odysseus claims to be that of the wind god, Aeolus. With the support of his crew, he goes up and asks Aeolus for their assistance.

Keep Your Friends Close

Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag of wind that contains the storm, telling him not to allow anyone to open it. Odysseus returns to the ship and the winions claim that the bag is full of treasure. Odysseus decides to stay awake in order to keep it closed.

Polites and Eurylochus convince Odysseus to sleep on the ninth day with the promise that they will keep the bag closed. Odysseus goes to his quarters and leaves the bag with his friends, trusting them.

And then…

Luck Runs Out

One of the crew members begins to argue against Odysseus’ command.

Elpenor is still furious, grieving the death of his friend, Perimedes. Elpenor claims that Odysseus is a liar and cannot be trusted, since he cannot even be trusted to keep his men alive. Polites argues in defense of Odysseus and Eurylochus attempts to mediate.

Elpenor opens the bag.

Odysseus bursts from his quarters to see the bag open. He attempts to close it and Eurylochus helps him. Polites pulls Elpenor away.

Ruthlessness

Poseidon rises from the water.

Only one ship is left standing by the end of the song. Odysseus is wracked with grief and guilt.

They keep going, and soon come across an island..
