I saw a man giving birth on the news when I was, like, 7. I was pretty sheltered, so I had to have a long hard think about how this was possible. I came to the conclusion that he was born a girl and somehow became a man (ha? almost there for a kid?) and I was convinced I was going to grow into a man, too. I had heard of trans women before so I knew the opposite was possible.

I asked my mom if it were possible for a "girl to become a boy." She immediately told me it wasn't. I said, "but it's possible for a boy to become a girl so why wouldn't it be possible for a girl to become a boy?"

"It's easier to poke a hole than it is to build a pole," she said. I was devastated.

My years going forward filled with wanting a penis so bad I dreamed about it and getting gender euphoria from short hair and neckties was a question that could have been answered if she didn't lie to me.
