I was today years old when I learnt about what those symbols in Aboriginal art represented I honestly can't believe we never got taught that, even when I was studying art. I always assumed they had meaning but no one [no white person] had ever bothered to mention it. I'm glad I learnt something new today.
Yeah, I think a lot of people tend to look down on Aboriginal art because they think it's a form of abstract art that is just lines and shapes but almost all of them tell a story. Sometimes it's a very obvious story, such as the emu dreaming where the waterhole flooded, and sometimes it's more symbolic.
the circle in the middle is a waterhole/dam or billabong. The squiggly lines coming out of it are small rivers. the dots represent the earth but because they are in neat lines, it almost feels as if they have been flattened by the flooded water, especially as the vector lines draw out from the waterhole in the middle. the emu tracks are heading toward the waterhole, and the three lines in the middle are marks left by their tail, implying that they are wading through the mud to get there.
It's a birdseye view of a moment just after the waterhole floods and afterwards the emus go looking for food.
It's Interesting, because the original artist D. J. Ross was from Yuendumu which is in central australia, so this would have been a rare time that there was enough rain to flood the waterhole.
Dreaming stories, kinship links, sacred rites, keeping track of biodiversity and songlines are some other topics covered by Aboriginal art.
In the same way monet painted the middle class and the local landscape in the late 1800's/early 1900's Aboriginal people also paint the average lifestyle of our people. It just looks different.
For example, this picture shows a LOT of activity. The men at the top left of the picture are doing a cultural burn near and around a sacred site, the women at the bottom left are digging for food. across the river, on the right the people are preparing food and in the center, two people (presumably elders) are preparing for a ceremony.
I wouldn't say these all happened at the same time, more that this was a common undertaking over a set of time.
it takes time to understand and not all symbols are the same in all areas, but once you do understand them it becomes easier to see the story being told.
So yeah, I hope this gives you the chance to look at Aboriginal art with new eyes
The Liberty Bridge in Budapest, Hungary. by Alexander Riek
saw a woman comforting her sobbing child saying “i already told you, you have to keep looking forward, looking back just gets you hurt” and i thought she was sharing a beautiful life lesson about the importance of letting go of regret and resentment. but it turns out the kid just wasn’t looking where he was going and ran into a wall
I love the term “loanwords” because it implies that you intend to give them back.
*dumps a box full of words on French’s front porch* You never came back for your shit.
Loanwords, loaned to the British Museum so
Would everyone like to know the best thing??? There are two types of borrowed word - loan words and calques. Loan words are words taken directly from the language i.e. tattoo, sushi, guillotine. Calques are words literally translated from the language before being borrowed i.e. beer garden, scapegoat, killer whale (incorrectly calqued, the original actually means whale killer which is a whole other post).
Did anyone notice the fun thing?
Loan word is a calque (German lehnwort lit. Loan+word) and calque is a loan word (French calque - tracing or imitation). Have a good day!
I find it fascinating that people who choose not to have children are generally assumed to feel really strongly about not having children (or even to feel really strongly against children, anyone’s children, in general). I am probably not going to have children, not because I REALLY REALLY HATE the idea of having children, but because I don’t really really love it. Out of all the major decisions I will make in my life, this one is the only irreversible one. I can sell a house, quit a job, divorce a spouse, whatever. I cannot unhave a child. I cannot opt out of being a parent once I become a parent. I can’t even take a step back for the sake of self-care or whatever, or else my child will suffer.
So for me, having children is fuck yes or not at all. The default will be to remain childfree. Having children should be an opt-in decision, not an opt-out one. Until/unless I develop really strong feelings about wanting to have children, I won’t have them, even if that means I never end up having them at all.
Sometimes you just come across something that puts into words what you have yet been unable to.
u ever look at a shade of green and think "yes."
Yes!!! There was this lounge I saw ages go in TK Maxx that was this amazing forest green colour. **Chef's kiss**
I just realized why Wednesday works so well for me as a high school show and a big part boils down to the dance:
The dresses aren't sexy.
They're pretty, they're cute, they're stylish. But I NEVER felt like any of the dresses for the girls - or the dances - were meant to be 'hot' or 'titillating' to an adult audience.
They're teens at a school dance. They look GORGEOUS but not 'sexy' for an adult gaze.
The school uniforms are LONG skirts, not micro-mini shorts with stockings that so many boarding school things go for. Even the costumes for the Poe cup - The Black Cats could have gone super sexy kitties, but while the jumpsuits were tight, they weren't catwoman tight. Wednesday's outfit was the tightest of all of them, but even that looked more athletic than sexy.
By and large, these teens aren't sexualized. Which, unfortunately, is so so rare for media. Shows have been sexualizing teens since like, forever I guess, so it was just really nice to watch a show where the kids are in 'high school', but they're allowed to be KIDS
saw new users saying they don't block bots bc "they inflate follower count 😌" and "what's the point" like who's gonna tell them (1) Noone cares about follower count and you can't even see it and (b) You have to bc they are using you to legitimize their dodgy links. They don't care about your aesthetic cat pics and lightning mcqueen fanfiction. They are using you.

I'm reblogging this again because since reblogging it, I've been getting a lot of bots again. Why is this happening?! Aaahh

i love this old man and his cat (ID in alt)
I'm not even a cat person but this is some wholesome content.
Genuinely can’t stand the new favouritism towards video format. You want me to spend a whole two minutes listening to someone say out loud a paragraph I could read in 20 seconds?
(This is about tiktok. I hate tiktok.)
It’s not just tiktok, it’s everything. I’m tired of clicking on news articles and instead finding it’s a video I have to watch. I’m tired of being sent to a video when I want to learn about a new thing instead of an article I can skim in less than a minute. You mean you want me to sit through an entire video, listening for the one kernel of information that’s buried in there that I’m interested in? Nah, man, life is too short to waste it like that. I don’t know why any of you like videos lmao.
OH MY GOD I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE. It’s almost a clinical avoidance at this point. I really hate video when I am just trying to read or look at pictures. Unless it’s animals doing something cute in 15 seconds or less I don’t want it. The sound irritates me. The movement bothers me. I get irrationally angry. If I want to look at videos I will go do that later on YouTube or some shit
I read so much faster than people speak. And that’s true even if they were as concise and organized as an article, which they generally aren’t.
We spent the first ten years of the internet figuring out how to shut off auto-blinking banner ads and now sites are throwing those at us and claiming they’re content.
I think videos have a time and a place.
I like videos for some things but sometimes just don't feel like watching a video or aren't in a location where I can listen to audio.
While some things are suited to video format, some things are just better suited to text format.
