To be quite honest with you all I do think that aro/ace-spectrum fans in fandoms where people are desperately inventing crossover ships and humanizing non-human characters in order to have a conventionally attractive guy to ship the main character with, instead of possibly having to enjoy a story with no romance in it, have the right to refer to everyone else as cowards.
I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;
The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.
And I am not going to mince words here:
A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.
That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.
"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.
So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.
#imo the potluck analogy applies- it would be rude to critique someone's icing technique at a potluck bc it wasn't as good as at the bakery #but if they had decorated their cupcakes w hate symbols it wouldn't be rude to tell them that's gross and gtfo #in fact it would be inappropriate to NOT say anything in that situation #or to complain that another guest who did point it out was 'ruining everyone's potluck' #and pointing out racism in fan works is 100% the second thing not the first! You know what's wild to me? Just how... Tame the canon Zutara dynamic actually is.
The way Bryke and antis describe it, it's some toxic barrage of arguments where both parties treat each other horribly. And that's just... Not true? If anything, that's closer to canon Maiko. Or even Kataang considering that Aang's technically lashed out at Katara more than Zuko has post-redemption.
Zuko and Katara admittedly did have a rough start, but they worked out their differences and she forgave him. After that, I would argue they're actually fairly close. Katara felt comfortable teasing him multiple times. She confided in him during TSR before even forgiving him. They were close enough to the point where she was the one he trusted to take down Azula.
As far as enemies to lovers (or shipping in general) goes, they're pretty mild
dustin, max, and jane do girls nights every other week
i don't care what those tiktok and instagram influencers tell you, have three meals a day!!! have a snack!! have that sweet treat!! have food that makes you feel good!!! especially if you're a woman!! starving yourself to look "desirable" will only make you desirable to people who want you to stay malnourished forever. it's a cycle of misery!!
Not to sound like a broken record but does it make anyone else viscerally angry how we realized in the very recent past that we can successfully eradicate devastating human-specific diseases (smallpox) yet now there's a million people telling you not to vaccinate your kids against measles. I know I know "everyone will not just" but also for real we could never have measles again if everyone would just be cool
When people justify using gen AI by talking about how it allows them to do (insert creative hobby) it sends me into a blind rage. The whole point of the creative hobby is to use your brain. Having a machine do it for you defeats the purpose. Thatâs like saying youâre getting into running marathons then just driving the 42km
make your newsies people of color. make your newsies women. make your newsies immigrants. make your newsies different ages. make your newsies smart. make your newsies disabled. make your newsies gender diverse. make your newsies have agency. make your newsies strong. the thing about the broadway show that i love so much is that ANYONE can play these characters and still do them justice.
in past productions weâve had a black jack kelly, a latino jack kelly, a black katherine, an asian david, a racetrack who isnât always happy go lucky, a crutchie whose actor is a disabled in real life. newsies have been genderswapped because gender doesnât dictate the character- take uksieâs spot, who is a black woman, for example; spot is the same powerhouse of a character regardless of whoâs playing them. these characters are who you make them and you do NOT, and should not, follow the path of making every newsie White Guy #17. this is fiction these are characters you can give them diverse identities! diverse cultures! diverse religions and diverse countries of origin and diverse lived experiences!
also stop making them stupid. for the love of GOD stop making them stupid. maybe most of them donât have a âformalâ education but theyâre street smart and quick on their feet and resilient and they should not be reduced down to an accent for shits and giggles. not every newsie has to be a white cisgender man. get real with it. you agree. reblog.
I will always care more about the supportive cishet boyfriend at pride than i will about the wannabe cop queer person interrogating every âstraight lookingâ couple to make sure theyâre âqueer enoughâ to be there btw. Donât worry about your cishet boyfriend, heâs sitting with me eating an ice cream wearing a homemade little pride bracelet around his arm and he is the happiest heâs ever been in his life :]
people of colour deserve to be able to enjoy fluff and escapism and transformative media and silly fandom stuff the same way that everyone else is allowed to, i think. thereâs a lot of unexamined hostility toward anyone who isnât white; sometimes itâs subtle, and sometimes itâs not. there needs to be far more love and support for poc, and far less defensiveness and tolerance regarding racism in spaces like these.
people will go onnn about how a manâs flaws makes him so nuanced and interesting and then act genuinely confused when u feel the same way about a womanâŠ
i just donât get it. where are all the women. where are all the women in your fanfictions. are they all out of town? did they all go on vacation together? do they all have a dentist appointment at the same time?

thats it, thats the post
Two things this website hates and thatâs women and gay people who are gay in the âI have sex with other gay peopleâ way and not some sort of thinly defined yearning and homophobic joke based system largely applied to brothers and male coworkers in early 2000s television shows. Three things this website hates actually sorry silly me but this website does hate black people.
Yeah
