Struggling through half a dozen abortive posts to explain this so just the thesis: I think that an inability to imagine yourself adapting to and maybe even finding satisfaction in a wide array of living situations weakens your ability to make decisions about your life. i really want a database that cross references like geographical regions (NOT just by state, by environment, like. eastern and western Colorado are completely different ecosystems) with native plants with which plants are historically used for dyeing fabrics.

The PANC movement is a latin-american based botanical movement (started out in Brazil) focused on researching and cataloguing non-conventional edible plants, and man. There are so many straight up ornamental plants that just. are edible. you can eat them. you can grab a daylily and eat it. You can grab a begonia and eat it. Hibiscus, lavender, dandelions. And those are just the flowers. So many little herbs out there that are fully edible (Shout out to lamb's ear, that one tastes really nice imo).

Like straight up there is free food out there. foraging is so cool but it's so hard to find actual sources not made by either some AI fucker that's gonna end up killing you or by some crunchy "eating grass will cure your cancer" influencer. PANC is made by actual scientists that specialized in botany that have fully researched and found out that These Plants Are Fully Safe to Eat.

And not only that, but they're legitimizing native knowledge. They're taking the plants that our native populations have been eating for centuries and are proving, in a lab, that yeah, these plants ARE safe to eat - which is incredible. It might sound stupid (like ooo NOW you're willing to believe the native people) but this is so, so important, because having ACTUAL SCIENTIFIC PROOF of their knowledge is a way to combat the still pervasive idea that natives are "stupid savages", or that their traditions are just "wacky spirituality nonsense".

Most sources are in portuguese, but you can still use a translator. Here's a link for a giant PDF with a shit ton of edible plants. This particular one has pictures of said plants, along which parts are edible and how (some you can eat straight up, others are edible after cooking, etc). Most of these plants are native to Brazil, but a lot of them are exotic plants that have been brought here as ornamental plants - and a lot of them have been shipped out to other countries as ornamental plants too, so you can still find some species near you.

Since "apocalypse" is kind of a Christian concept, I don't define Jewishness by it.

Judaism is absolutely post-catastrophic, though. Post-cataclysmic, perhaps.

And yet we persist. Truly, our greatest gift (other than linear storytelling, but that's a different post) is the ability to pick up the pieces of our traditions and rearrange them to suit the circumstances in which we find ourselves.

Also I feel that the idea of an impending apocalypse is VERY Christian in that they think the rapture is coming and that generally explicitly means the death of all “non believers” i.e. Jews. Idk if this makes sense but that’s why the wording makes me uncomfortable

I'm actually using Christian language on purpose here, because I am trying to convey to gentiles, particularly culturally Christian onea, what it means to be continuing on as a people, and as an individual after the world has ended for you and your people, which unforunately leaves me limited to Christian language.

While there are other events in Jewish history that qualify as cataclysms and wiped away the Jewish world that was, when I wrote this post, I was thinking specifically of the Holocaust, and trying to convey to a culturally Christian audience what it means to be a Jew after the Holocaust, and what that feels like. And unfortunately in the culturally Christian English I have at my disposal, the only way to convey what it means to be rebuilding after the world that was has ended, is to compare it if not to the apocalypse of the Christian bible, then at least to the literary genre referred to as post apocalyptic literature.
