Thanks š„°
Good luck on your interview!
Thanks š
so I got into grad school today with my shitty 2.8 gpa and the moral of the story is reblog those good luck posts for the love of god
okay so i just got my dream job??? a week after applying to it?? and now iām thinkingā¦.maybe this is the good luck post
ā¦..not even six hours later i got an offer of a well paying full time long-term job with free room and board in queens in nyc, allowing me independence and a way to escape an abusive situation and an unhealthy environment
likes charge reblogs cast, folks, this is the good luck post
i need all the help i can get for finals
Hey so
the last time I reblogged this post right before I got a great job, in a permanent work-from-home position, with benefits, retirement, and a salary literally 3x what I was making before, doing something I really like.Ā
So you know.Ā
This might be the real one, yāall.
More fantasy/sci-fi world that employ the Bumbling Foreigner Exception, please.
We have all seen the plot device: āoh you shared a plate of space-figs with her?? That was a proposal, youāre engaged now!ā Or, for conflict,Ā āwhat you have done is a grave insult in these lands, and can only be settled with a duel to the death!ā Please give me savvy villages full of people who understand the protagonist Isnāt From Around Here and doesnāt know the rules.
New guy walked into the temple without cleansing himself? No, of course we donāt imprison him, itās not an insult if thereās no intention behind it! Just yank him out of there and show him where the bathing pools are. Have him pick some blooms to leave at the altar as apology. Now he knows.
New guy smacked a royal guardās shoulder after telling a joke? Okay, okay, calm down, explain to him that touching that guard is read as an insult to his ability to protect the king. Did he mean to imply that? No? He apologized and wonāt do it again? Perfect, fixed. ā¦he wants to know if his joke was funny, though? Yeah, that tracks.
New guy offered the prince a bite of his otherworldly ācandied barā before solstice dinner had been served? No way the prince is going to take that as a romantic proposition, that would be ridiculous. (He did take some of the āKat Kitā though, and it was apparently very good.)
Okay now imagine the Bumbling Foreigner got acquainted in their costumes and still! keeps on doing romantic/courting behaviors towards a prince whoās absolutely as smitten and driven mad by how they seemingly donāt take the hint that prince is losing their damn mind thinking his crush keeps accidentally flirting with him!!!!
Until they see Bumbling Foreigner swiftly reject a similar act from another person and explain they donāt feel the same and realize A, theyāre perfectly aware of the connotations of their behavior, B, theyāre doing it INTENTIONALLY and C, oh my god heās such a fucking mess
And then they kiss
:: ponders::Ā I just may have to play with this idea for an upcoming fic or twoā¦..
Letās not forget to acknowledge Alexandre Dumas this Black History Month
The writer of two of the most well known stories worldwide, The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo was a black man.Ā
Thatās excellence.
Letās not forget that he was played on screen by a white man. And the fact that he was black is barely ever mentioned or the book he wrote inspired by his experiences.
Other things not to forget about Alexandre Dumas:
chose to take on his slave grandmotherās last name, Dumas, like his father did before him.
grew up too poor for formal education, so was largely self-taught, including becoming a prolific reader, multilingual, well-travelled, and a foodie, resulting in his writing both a combination encyclopedia/cookbook (which justā is fucking outrageous to me) AND the adaptation of The Nutcracker on which Tchaikovsky based his ballet
he also wrote a LOOOOT of nonfiction and fiction about history, politics, and revolution, bc he was pro-monarchy, but a radical cuss, and that got him in a lot of hot water at home and abroad.
even beyond that, he generally put up with a lot of racist bullshit in France, so he went and wrote a novel about colonialism and a BLATANTLY self-insert anti-slavery vigilante hero (which he then cribbed from to write the Count of Monte Cristo, the main character of which, Edmond DantƩs, Dumas also based on himself).
(ā¦a novel which also features a LOAD of PoC beyond the Count, and at LEAST one queer character, btw, bc EVERY MOVIE ADAPTATION OF ANYTHING BY DUMAS IS A LIE; seriously, at LEAST one of the four Musketeers is Black, y'all.)
famously, when some fuckshit or other wanted to come at Dumas with some anti-Black foolishness, Dumas replied, āMy father was a mulatto, my grandfather was a Negro, and my great-grandfather a monkey. You see, Sir, my family starts where yours ends.ā
for the bicentennial of his birthday, Pres. Jacques Cirac was like, āā¦sorry about the hella racism,ā and had Dumasās ashes reinterred at the PanthĆ©on of Paris, bc if youāre gonna keep the corpses of the cream of the crop all together, Dumasās more widely read and translated than literally everybody else.
and they are still finding stuff old dude wrote, seriously; like discovering ālostā works as recently as 2002, publishing stuff for the first time as recently as 2005.
ALSO IMPORTANT:
SWAG
I am absolutely ashamed to admit I had NO idea Dumas was black.
when this post first went around (a year ago apparently) I was like BUT WHAT ABOUT DADDY DUMAS THOUGHĀ because basically
daddy general dumas was an immense fierce french warrior who was a 6 foot plus, stunningly gorgeous and charismatic Black gentlemanĀ
he invaded egypt
the native egyptians saidĀ āis this napoleon? this must be napoleon. we for one welcome our majestic new overlordā
then napoleon showed up
napoleon has all the presence of yesterdayās plain Tesco hummus
the native egyptians were likeĀ ā⦠no⦠no, weāve thought very hard and weāll have General Dumas actuallyā
this did not make napoleon happy
in fact it made him jealous
napoleon felt so emasculated that he launched a campaign of revenge against General Dumas, including taking away his pension, that probably inspired a lot of Alexandreās rather satisfying scenes in which fathers are nobly avenged and the money-grubbing villains are rubbed in the mud
I was never taught that he was Black either. WTF.
General Dumas (aka Thomas Alexandre Davy de La Pailleterie) looked like thisā¦
ā¦and like thisā¦
ā¦while āNapoleon has all the presence of yesterdayās plain Tesco hummusāā¦
:-D
I suspect Alexandre Dumas would have laughed at that, because besides looking like someone who laughed a lotā¦
ā¦he was also a foodie.
He was also born in present-day Haiti. Back then, it was the French colony of Saint-Domingue.
work is sending me to french training, which i have been nervous about. had the first lesson this morning. teacher told me i had beautiful pronunciation, like i'd been raised with it (i was not). dangerous ego levels for someone who can only hold conversations that sound like tƩlƩfranƧais episodes
today's feedback was essentially that it's confusing to speak to me because instead of sounding like an anglo i sound like a francophone who is an idiot fhklgglh
you're like the real life version of that Paul Taylor bit

Tailoring your own clothes
So a little while back, I reblogged a post about tailoring your own clothes. The gist of it was this (IIRC):
Someone was wondering why even people on TV with non-mainstream-TV-approved body shapes always look so good in their clothes.Ā
The long and short of it is: their bodies arenāt better than yours. They just have people tailoring every single piece of clothing they wear to flatter their figures.Ā
Off-the-rack clothes arenāt made to look good on most peopleās bodies. The advice in the post was buy clothes that fit the largest part of you, even if theyāre too big elsewhere, and have them altered to fit.Ā
That post hit me like a lightning bolt. I have a curvy figure. Iām not plus-sized, but Iāve got a small waist and large hips. Which is great in certain types of clothes (dresses, mainly), but means that if I donāt wear fitted t-shirts or blousesāif they fall straightāI just look sort of⦠boxy. I need clothes that go in at the waist.Ā
My grandma was an amazing seamstress, so when I needed clothes fixed, she was around to tailor them. When she got into her 90s and her eyesight was too diminished for her to sew, we started going to a woman in our neighborhood whoād lost her husband and had started doing alterations to bring in some extra income. OF COURSE I looked good back then. I had a tailor.
Then I moved away from my parents without really knowing How To Adult and would go to Target to get clothes and just get depressed by them and never realized how much of an advantage having people who could tailor my clothes (and, you know, parents to pay for having them tailoredā¦) had been.Ā
So. I have a 1970s Singer Fashion Mate sewing machine that is designed to weather the apocalypseāI got it at Goodwill for $20.Ā
And I have begun researching how to tailor your own clothes. If anyone else was wondering about that after that last post, here are some helpful links Iāve discovered.Ā
When and Why to Get it TailoredĀ - This article is (annoyingly) set up as a slideshow, and focuses on getting a professional to do your alterations rather than doing them yourself, but itās got some good advice nonetheless, such as:
Basic alterations that can make a huge difference, such as adding lingerie loops to keep bra straps in place (SERIOUSLY MY FAVORITE DRESSES FROM HIGH SCHOOL ALL HAD THESE AND WHY DID THEY DISAPPEAR IN EVERYTHING I WEAR NOW?), adding snaps between the buttons on button-down shirts for larger-busted women (you know how sometimes they gap? thereās help for that), etc.
Average prices (at least on the East Coast) for basic alterations: replacing a zipper will run you about $20, while tailoring pants or a skirt to fit your hips and butt will be about $35.
If you want to get a garment made of special materials (leather, fur, beaded/embroidered silk) altered, go to someone who specializes in working with that material.
What NOT to try to alter.
How to find a tailor.
Having that perfect dress that you love so much duplicated and how much that will cost.
Learning Alterations - Great step-by-step tutorials on basic alterations like how to take in the waist of jeans (essential if you have a smaller waist and larger hips, because itāll stop them from riding down every time you bend over or sit down).
Tailoring Ready-to-Wear - A full-on online course from Craftsy (costs $24.99) with videos and individual lessons on everything from hemming pants to lengthening them to altering shoulders and armholes to adding hidden zippers.
Plus-Sized Fitting and Design - Another online course (this oneās $34.99) that looks like it focuses both on alterations and on actually making clothes that are flattering to plus-sized forms.
Alterations and Tailoring 101 - Not a how-to post, but this one has a lot of useful information and ideas, such as identifying which garments to alter.
Alterations Needed blog - A whole blog on this stuff, with a lot of detailed how-tos. It focuses on fixing things to fit if youāre shorter than average/petite, but contains a lot of great advice for anyone (like an entry on why button-down shirts often bulge in back and how to fix it).Ā
Pinch and Pin your Shirt - Super-quick video tutorial (aimed at gentlemen), but useful for anyone who wears button-down shirts on how to fix a baggy shirt.Ā
If I find other helpful tutorials, Iāll add them. If you know of any, please let me know!
All thing good and pretty to you! ā„
Awww thanks ⤠same for you sweetheart š
Designing clothes for wheel chair users!
Clothes are mostly made to be worn while standing or walking, with little thought put into how comfortable they are while sitting. This post has a bunch of things to keep in mind while designing and making clothes.
Designing garments for Wheelchair users Welcome to this resource page on designing knitting, crochet and sewing garments for wheelchair user
This blog post is from a wheelchair user, with styles and fabrics that she has found to work well and why they do.

Turns out that in order to post my fics, I have to write them! Shocked and upset.
For those with a permanent or temporary physical disability involving mobility impairment, cooking can present challenges as well as opportunities for creative problem solving. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/03/google-testing-its-controversial-new-ad-targeting-tech-millions-browsers-heres
For alternatives.
Firefox remains best in show in the category of ābrowsers that wonāt do this bullshit.ā Itās got a long, long history of trust, a sizable userbase, and a decent amount of privacy built in, with more extensions and customization options than youāll ever need. However, note that it can sometimes perform slowly, especially with a lot of tabs open.
Opera is a slightly lesser-known browser, and my personal main browser for day-to-day use. It has a built-in VPN (though this can be slow at times), adblocker, and anti-tracking tools, with more available via extensions. Operaās userbase is slightly smaller, so overall less extensions are available than Firefox, and (in my experience) it generally needs a few settings to be tweaked on first startup to make it comfortable to use (notably, the keyboard shortcuts are different from chrome/firefox).
DuckDuckGo is a privacy-focused search engine that also has (at least) a mobile browser (for Android devices). Iām not honestly sure if they have a desktop or Apple version, but the mobile browser provides many similar safety features to Opera. I find Opera more convenient for casual browsing, but if youāre very conscious of online security, DuckDuckGo might be the way to go.
Microsoft Edge exists. Donāt use it.
Please do yourself a favor and stop using Chrome!
Ecosia isnāt Chrome based, right? thatās what ive been using, for the trees, and it says it doesnāt save your history but i wanted to check
Iām afraid so. And based on many other Chrome based browser scandals, I donāt trust it.
dammit. ill download firefox then :/ thanks for letting me know
edit: how do you actually download it
edit edit: wHY does it send me to GOOGLE, IMMEDIATELY upon downloading it????? like i have the app and it says āfirefox browserā and itās talking all about how secure it is etc but the little rainbow G icon is right next to the actual browser and theres a link right to Google on the firefox homepage how do i stop that
So from my understanding Firefox uses Google but it blocks all the trackers
that makes sense! ty!! i ended up changing the default browser to duckduckgo anyway (and deleted google and amazon off of the browser options anyway) but i appreciate it!!! (im afraid this all becomes null and void with me using only gmail as all of my email accs but thereās not much i can really do anything about that. hopefully firefox will block gmail from seeing my searches through the gmail account i used to sign in :///)
Iād recommend Protonmail, as a substitute for gmail. Itās a Swiss based end-to-end encrypted email service that is expanding to Proton-calander and Proton-drive with their paid version. Their ProtonVPN also has a free version with limited locations. They also have apps for both android and apple.
To boost Firefox, Iād add-on-
Facebook Container- isolates your Facebook activity from the rest of your web activity in order to prevent Facebook from tracking you outside of the Facebook website via third party cookies.
HTTPS Everywhere- Many sites on the web offer some limited support for encryption over HTTPS, but make it difficult to use. For instance, they may default to unencrypted HTTP, or fill encrypted pages with links that go back to the unencrypted site.
Privacy Badger automatically learns to block invisible trackers. Instead of keeping lists of what to block, Privacy Badger automatically discovers trackers based on their behavior.
Privacy Possum monkey wrenches common commercial tracking methods by reducing and falsifying the data gathered by tracking companies.
uBlock Origin is not an āad blockerā, itās a wide-spectrum content blocker with CPU and memory efficiency as a primary feature.
Firefox Multi-Account Containers lets you carve out a separate box for each of your online lives ā no more opening a different browser just to check your work email! Here is a quick video showing you how it works. Under the hood, it separates website storage into tab-specific Containers. Cookies downloaded by one Container are not available to other Containers. With the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension, you canā¦
Sign in to two different accounts on the same site. For example, you could sign in to work email and home email in two different Container tabs.
Keep different kinds of browsing far away from each other (for example, you might use one Container tab for managing your Checking Account and a different Container tab for searching for new songs by your favorite band)
Avoid leaving social-network footprints all over the web (for example, you could use a Container tab for signing in to a social network, and use a different tab for visiting online news sites, keeping your social identity separate from tracking scripts on news sites)
Enhancer for YouTubeā¢-Ā Built to get the most out of YouTube, this extension comes packed with all sorts of features that allow you, among other things, to manage ads as you wish, control the playback speed and the volume level with the mouse wheel, automate repetitive tasks such as selecting the appropriate playback quality, configure dozens of keyboard shortcuts to control YouTube like a pro, and much more.
Decentraleyes- Protects you against tracking through āfreeā, centralized, content delivery.
Protects privacy by evading large delivery networks that claim to offer free services.
Complements regular blockers such as uBlock Origin (recommended), Adblock Plus, et al.
Works directly out of the box; absolutely no prior configuration required.
Bitwarden- A secure and free password manager for all of your devices. Bitwarden is the easiest and safest way to store all of your logins and passwords while conveniently keeping them synced between all of your devices.
Several of these also have companion versions in Firefox mobile.
If you are interested in other trustworthy add-ons, this icon shows that the add-on is an editorially curated extension that meet the highest standards of security, functionality, and user experience. Firefox staff, along with community participation, selects each extension and manually reviews them for security and policy compliance before they receive Recommended status.
Good luck! @ or message me if you need anything else.
Edit: Iād make a firefox account so you can log in and sync tabs/bookmarks across devices.
holy shit this is insane thank you so much!!!
