Like, he didn't pull that move of lifting Shane onto the countertop just to kiss right? It was Step 1A of his grand plan, titled: "suck him off while in a half-squat." Anyone else think he made Shane come like three times so that by the time he asked Shane to stay the night Shane was like 90% sex hormone, 5% Hockey on TV later, 4% hungry guy, and 1% thinking brain? The urban fantasy show I actually want to see is a hospital drama with a dedicated wing for supernatural illnesses.

Vampirism. Lycanthropy. Cheap spells gone wrong. A woman brought in for her prenatal has to be told her baby is a lindworm. Someone is literally being followed by the anthropomorphic personification of the Black Death.

Someone somewhere out there is having their perception of the world irreparably shattered by the knowledge that magic is real, and at the other side is a team of doctors who have to roll their eyes and pull out Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales because some high school kid tried to go Carrie with a cheap spellbook and turn all the kids at prom into frogs, and the doctors have to wrangle a couple dozen teenagers into admitting if they have a true love who can break the spell.

I want the hospital director to be some dark entity that feeds on human misery but figured out that if you successfully treat the source of the misery then instead of hunting you down as an abomination the humans start bringing more miserable people to your house en masse and things kinda got out of hand from there.

I don't know how much this has actually been discussed in online spaces, but when I talk to other aros irl it's pretty widely agreed apon that being aromantic is both an orientation and a political identity. By which I mean that being aromantic requires a massive shift in world view, including the dismantling of amatonormativity, the deconstruction of what the word 'love' even means, and the realization that you have control over what your important relationships look like.

All of those things can have a major impact on your political outlooks, social outlooks, and simply the way you view the world. I've said before that even if I did experience romantic attraction some day I would still identify as aro because being aromantic has shifted my view of what relationships even are to such a degree that like... romantic relationships barely make sense as a category to apply to myself anymore.

Everyone I know who identified as aro or questioned if they were aro before experiencing attraction and identifying as allo has ended up poly for what I suspect is this exact reason. Polyamory is one of the only relationship models out there currently that allows for romantic relationships outside of the typical amatonormative model and once you've done some work dismantling how society views relationships slotting right back into traditional monogamy doesn't have a lot of appeal.

So anyways op, I know a lot of folks in the notes are taking this to simply mean 'not wanting to date' (which is fine, that is still a radical notion in our society that I'm glad the aro community can make space for) but I think your tags are absolutely right about pushing amatonormativity out of our spaces as an aro value that people can (and should!) believe in and benefit from even if they're not aro.

i think it's so cool how black sails' ending shifts with the perception of the viewer. like it's not dissimilar to a video game where the ending changes depending on how you interact with the world, if you do 'good' or 'bad' things, you might get a slightly different ending. With black sails, depending on how you view the characters and their relationships, the ending changes. Silver killed Flint, but wait, no, he didn't! Flint's with Thomas and he's happy now, no Flint's with Thomas and they're miserable and in prison, no they're both dead. Silver and Madi are together again, wait no, that's not right Madi left him. Jack Anne and Max are all together again and Nassau is theirs, but wait Jack isn't ever going to stop going back to the account and Max and Anne are going to be torn apart again aren't they? I think black sails manages to avoid the issues with having 'good' or 'bad' endings by refusing to choose (or make the viewer) choose a ending that's 'canon' or 'true' (or even which one is truly good or bad).

Seeing a depressing number of social media posts from teachers leaving the profession this Christmas. People in their first year, their 5th, their 12th, their 20th. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern to this, beyond the fact that teaching in England has become unsustainable and is destroying people’s mental health.

Recruitment is down, and it will get worse for 2024, because the government have reduced the number of training places.

I’m not even sure that a decent pay increase, achieved by striking will save us. I think there needs to be a fundamental realisation across the profession that agreeing to do one more thing “for the kids” is slowly breaking people. Papering over the cracks left behind by Covid and over a decade of Tory rule is destroying people’s mental health. The pressure teachers are under, it’s too much.

And yeah, I’m sure it’s the same in loads of other professions- but I can’t speak about them with the same authority, because I’m not involved.

But I do think it’s also worth pointing out that right now, schools are providing a limited safety net to many children in poverty, or in mental health crisis, as other services are really really stretched. However, as the shortage of teachers gets more acute, it’s less and less likely this safety net will continue to exist.

So even if you don’t care about education (and you should), care about the kids who get helped by the teacher who collects and gives out second hand winter coats. Care about the kids who will lose their pastoral support sessions, because now the person who runs them is covering lessons. Care about the schools who used to provide low cost holiday clubs, including a hot meal for kids in poverty, but don’t have the staff willing to get involved now. These are the sort of things we lose when we don’t have a stable staff body in schools.
