It's kind funny out of context that everyone is like "yay, they left the transphobia in the Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door remaster!"

The original game had a character that was trans, and getting transphobic abuse from her sisters. When it was released in English the first time, they cut out the "trans" element and just turned it into generic bullying.

Now Nintendo is releasing an HD remaster of the game, and for a month or two fans knew it was getting a new translation, but not if they were going to include her being trans, or cut it out again.

Now that the game is almost out and is getting reviewed, we finally know: yep, Vivian is trans. So the (in story, by a villainous character) transphobia is back on the menu.

It's just that "the game has a canon trans character" and "the game has a transphobic character" go hand in hand.

So really everyone is happy about the first part (Vivian is canonically a trans woman!) and that's good enough to outweigh the second part (her sister(s) are transphobic at her and this has plot relevance)

It’s really her transness is essential to the theming of the chapter in which she is introduced — during which time, Mario’s face and name are stolen, and he’s desperately fighting to get people to see him for who he is. He is fighting to have his identity acknowledged. For a trans person, that, that sounds awfully familiar.

To make his only ally during that time was a trans woman, who was, in parallel, doing very much the same? Trying to be recognized as herself? Was an important piece of narrative poetry that was left out of the first English translation.

And ultimately, the transphobes you fight against are the big bads. And the resolution of Vivian’s story is that she finds a new crew of people, who love and accept her for who she is, and together they can topple those who abused her and who seek to expand the scope of their abuse.

While sometimes transphobia in a game is pointless and unnecessary, in this case, it is CENTRAL to the struggle of both Vivian AND Mario. It’s arguably one of the more beautiful pieces of narrative poetry I’ve -ever- seen in a video game.

It’s genuinely fucking amazing. And I cried this morning when I found out they just had her come out and say it. That she realized she wasn’t her sisters’ brother; she was their sister.

It’s so important.
