I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, Ari Notartomaso has phenomenal talent!!
The whole cast is incredible but Ari’s voice in particular AND their acting just always stands out to me. They bring such beautiful queer representation to the screen and it’s so heart warming to see all the non-conforming Grease fans have someone to idolise.
I really hope we get a season 2, everyone in the show deserves it. But if we don’t, I can’t wait to see what comes next in Ari’s career and I wish them every happiness and success for the future.
A/N: First, my sincerest apologies for not posting on Day 18 or 19. I had no WiFi and found out I had a bad router; I got a new one, and things are working okay now.
I was going to work on Day 18&19 and post them today, but that's not going to happen. So instead, I will be editing them and using them for Days 21 & 22. Doing this will put me back on track, and I can work on my Secret Santa Pitchmas gift.
I still plan to do something for Days 18 & 19 AFTER Christmas.
Day 20 - Secret Santa Crush
From Tumblr User Anonymous: Beca and Chloe are coworkers with huge crushes on each other. They get each other for office secret Santa and use it to tell each other they like them.
"Nothing," Beca said, settling back in her chair. "Um, have you seen Chloe?"
"She had an appointment this morning," Stacie said from behind Beca. "I heard her telling Aubrey yesterday. She'll be in later."
"Oh," Beca said.
"Are you finally going to ask her out?" Stacie whispered.
"No," Beca scoffed. "Why would you ask that?"
"Because your toner for her can be seen from space," Stacie said.
"I do not have a toner for Chloe," Beca said, looking around to make sure no one was listening.
"Good morning, Chloe," Beca heard Aubrey Posen say and straightened her posture.
"Good morning!" Chloe called out. As she passed Beca's desk, she said, "Hey, Becs!"
"Hey, uh, good morning, Chloe," Beca mumbled.
"Listen up, everyone," Aubrey said, clapping her hands to get their attention. "You may have noticed that the office Christmas tree is up, which means it's Secret Santa time!"
A few light cheers went up; Chloe was excitedly clapping and bouncing in her seat. Beca smiled at her. Chloe grinned back, causing Beca to avert her gaze and look at Aubrey.
"You know the drill," Aubrey continued. "Envelopes will be placed on the tree with a name inside. Then, you pick an envelope from the tree and buy that person a gift. We will have the gift exchange at the Christmas Party on December 23rd."
"What if we won't be here for the party?" Jesse asked. "I'm leaving that morning for Pennsylvania to spend Christmas with my family that morning."
"Then don't pick a name," Aubrey said. "The envelopes will be put in place on Friday, so let me know before then if you won't be here to participate. For everyone else, the gifts should be no more than forty dollars, and you can place them under the tree anytime before the party. Any questions?"
Aubrey looked around to see everyone shaking their heads.
"No?" Aubrey said. "Great. Get back to work. Chloe, may I see you in my office?"
"Sure," Chloe said, standing and following Aubrey.
Stacie rolled her chair over to Beca's desk.
"You should try and get Chloe's name for Secret Santa," Stacie said.
Beca looked at her. "How do you propose I do that? I mean, if I wanted to do that, how would I? No one knows whose name is in the envelope.
"I'll find out who got Chloe's name, and you can offer to trade with them," Stacie said. "I can always figure out who got who."
Chloe came out of Aubrey's office, and Beca watched her walk over and stop in front of her desk. Stacie smirked and rolled back over to her desk.
"Can I help you, Chloe?" Beca asked.
"I hope so," Chloe said. "Aubrey just asked me to head up the party committee, and I need some people to help with food, decorating, and stuff. I'm having a meeting in the conference room at two today to get things started. Would you be willing to volunteer to help?"
"Um, sure," Beca said. "I can do that."
"How about you, Stacie?" Chloe asked. "Could you help as well?"
"Sure," Stacie said. "I'll help."
"Great!" Chloe said with a beaming smile. "I'll write down some ideas I have, and we can discuss them at the meeting. Later, girls."
Beca couldn't help but smile as she watched Chloe practically skip back to her desk.
~~ 25 Days of BeChloe Christmases 2022 ~~
Chloe sat at her desk and smiled when she saw Beca looking at her. She smiled, and Beca quickly looked away, causing Chloe to frown.
"What is it about Beca that makes me so nervous about asking her out?" Chloe thought. "She seems to like me, too."
Chloe sighed, woke up her computer, and got lost in the weekly report she needed to run.
Chloe was so engrossed in her work that she lost all track of time.
"Chloe, are you coming to the meeting?" Stacie asked as she walked past Chloe's desk.
"What?" Chloe said. "It can't be two o'clock already."
"Afraid so," Stacie said.
Chloe stood and looked around. "Is Beca already in the conference room?"
"She went to lunch late," Stacie said. "But she said she'd see us in the meeting."
The two women entered the conference room to find Fat Amy and Jessica waiting for them.
"I'm sorry I'm late," Chloe said. "I got busy and lost track of time."
"Can we hurry this along," Fat Amy said. "I still have to finish my report."
"Right," Chloe said. "First, I want to thank you all-"
"Sorry, I'm late," Beca said as she hurried into the room.
"It's okay, Beca," Chloe said. "We just started."
Beca stood nervously to the side.
"Is everything okay?" Chloe asked.
"I, um, I saw you were busy and hadn't eaten lunch, so I brought you a sandwich from the diner," Beca said, holding a bag out to Chloe. "It's your usual."
"Aww," Stacie said. "That's so sweet."
Beca glared at Stacie.
"Thank you, Beca," Chloe said, hugging Beca. "This is very sweet of you."
Beca blushed and patted Chloe on the back. "You're welcome."
Chloe pulled back from the hug and looked at Beca. "How much do I owe you?"
"Don't worry about it," Beca said. "It's my treat."
"I'll get yours next time," Chloe said.
"Um, okay," Beca said.
Beca smiled as she went and sat down. She blushed and glared at Amy when Amy started making kissing noises at her.
"Okay, ladies," Chloe said, getting everyone's attention. "We don't have much time, so let's get started."
~~ 25 Days of BeChloe Christmases 2022 ~~
It was the day of the party, and Chloe was excited because "her party team" did an excellent job with everything. She called everyone over to her desk and handed them each an envelope.
"What's this?" Beca asked, looking at the envelope in her hand.
"It's just little something from me to say thank you for all your hard work on the party," Chloe said.
"You didn't have to do that, Chloe," Stacie said.
"But, I'm glad she did," Fat Amy said, holding up a gift card to the diner next door to their building.
"Did we all get the same thing?" Jessica asked, opening her envelope and looking inside. "We did."
"Let's plan to use our cards and have lunch together after the holidays," Stacie said.
The other girls agreed.
"As the party team's leader, Chloe should come with us," Beca said. Then, at Fat Amy's glare, Beca quickly added, "I'll pay for her lunch."
"In that case, you should join us, Red," Fat Amy said.
Chloe smiled and said, "I'd like that. Thank you, Beca."
Beca blushed, and Stacie grinned at her.
"Let's go, ladies," Chloe said, standing from her desk. "The party will start soon, and we need to do one more check to ensure everything's perfect."
The team made their way to the conference room where the party would be. Aubrey came in behind them.
"Chloe, you and your team did a great job," Aubrey said, looking around. "I'm impressed."
"Thank you, Aubrey," Chloe said.
Aubrey took Chloe's arm and led her to a corner where no one could overhear them.
"Are you ready for the Secret Santa?" Aubrey asked.
"Yeah, I am," Chloe said, grinning. "I just hope Beca likes it."
"I'm sure she will," Aubrey said. "Especially when she learns your part of the present."
Chloe was kept from responding as the rest of the employees started arriving for the party.
An hour later, Chloe was making the rounds.
"Amy, stop adding liquor to the punch," Chloe chastised the boisterous blonde. "We want to make sure everyone makes it home safely."
"Aye, aye, Cap'n," Fat Amy said with a two-finger salute.
Chloe then made her way over to Beca, who was providing the music.
"Hey, Beca," Chloe said, smiling. "I love the music you've put together."
"Thanks," Beca said.
"Aubrey's waving at me," Chloe said. "I think we're going to do the Secret Santa exchange soon, so after this song, cut the music."
"Okay," Beca said.
Chloe squeezed Beca's arm before walking over to stand with Aubrey. The song ended, and Beca paused the music.
"Okay, everyone," Aubrey called out. "Gather around; it's time for the Secret Santa exchange."
Everyone gathered around the tree. Amy handed Beca a drink as she joined her.
"Thank," Beca said, taking a sip. She grimaced at the amount of alcohol in the drink. "Sheesh, Amy, are you trying to get me drunk?"
"Shhh," Amy said, causing Beca to look at Aubrey and Chloe.
"First, I want to thank Chloe and her team for putting together such a wonderful party," Aubrey said, lightly clapping.
The partygoers clapped and cheered as well.
"Okay, settle down," Aubrey said. "Chloe will now explain how were are going distribute the Secret Santa gifts. Chloe?"
"Thank you, Aubrey," Chloe said. "I'll call you up one at a time and hand you your gift. You'll open it and see if you can guess who your Secret Santa is. Okay?"
"This is going to take forever," Bumper Allen said. "Let's just get our gifts and open them. Then our Secret Santa can tell us who they are whenever they want."
"Yeah." several voices call out.
"Okay," Chloe said, chuckling. "If that's how you want to do it. Go for it."
Everyone rushed to the tree and, amidst laughing and shoving, grabbed their gifts. Beca stood back to wait for an opportunity to find hers.
"Out of the way, flat butts," Fat Amy said, pushing her way to the front. "Aha! Got it."
Fat Amy pushed her way out of the crowd and returned to the drinks table. She opened her gift bag and pulled out a bottle of Tequila. She waved it around, cheering.
The partygoers finally moved away from the tree, and Beca found her gift among the last few still under the tree. She picked up Chloe's as well and walked over to her.
"Um, I know we're supposed to wait until you open your gift," Beca said. "But, I, um, I'm your Secret Santa."
"You are?" Chloe asked, genuinely surprised. "I'm your Secret Santa."
"Really?" Beca asked.
"I'm excited to see what you got me," Chloe said as she gently removed the paper from her gift. Once the paper was removed, she held a box. She opened the box and took out what was inside. "You bought me a ticket to the New Year's Eve Party at the Hilton?"
"Actually," Beca said. "I bought two. I was hoping-" Beca swallowed and ran a hand through her hair. "I like you, Chloe, and I was hoping you would allow me to be your date to the party."
"Open your gift, Beca," Chloe said, smiling.
Beca furrowed her brow and opened the gift.
"You got me the same thing," Beca said, holding up the single ticket.
"Yeah," Chloe said. "I like you, too. And I also bought two tickets, hoping I could be your date."
Beca laughed and pulled Chloe into a hug. "I'd love to be your date!"
"I'd love to be your date, too," Chloe said. Then, she pulled back from the hug and asked, "What are were going to do with the extra pair of tickets?"
Beca looked over to see Stacie flirting with Aubrey. She doesn't know how, but she guessed they had something to do with her and Chloe being each other's Secret Santa.
"I have an idea," Beca said, taking Chloe's hand. "Come with me."
Chloe let Beca lead her over to Stacie and Aubrey.
"How would you two like to go on a New Year's Eve double date with Chloe and me?"
"That's a great idea, Beca!" Chloe said, kissing her on the cheek. "What do you say, Aubrey? Are you finally going to grow a pair and ask Stacie out?"
"Yeah, Aubrey," Stacie said, smirking. "Are you finally going to grow a pair and ask me out?"
"Stacie," Aubrey said. "Would you-"
"Yes, I would!" Stacie said, pulling Aubrey into a kiss.
"We should-"
"Don't mind if we do," Chloe said, crashing her lips against Beca's.
Beca put her arms around Chloe and returned the kiss. Their kiss broke naturally, and Beca smiled at Chloe.
"I was going to say we should leave them alone," Beca said, causing Chloe's face to fall. "But I like your idea better."
Chloe smiled again as Beca smashed her lips into hers.
Prompt from FanFiction User malexfaith: Beca and Chloe are together in High School but break up just before they head off to separate colleges and lose touch. Five years later, they meet up again due to their careers (Beca in music; Chloe, a photographer).
Chloe entered the music studio with plenty of time to spare to make it to her appointment on time. She walked over to the receptionist's desk.
"Good afternoon," Chloe said. "I'm Chloe Beale, and I have an appointment with Mr. Burnett."
"Have a seat, and I'll let him know you're here," the receptionist said.
"Thank you," Chloe said and went to the waiting area.
Chloe sat and thumbed through a magazine she found on the table. She smiled when she came across one of her photos advertising L.A. tourism.
"Miss Beale?"
A man Chloe presumed was Mr. Burnett stood in front of her. Chloe stood and held out her hand.
"I'm Chloe."
"Theo Burnett," Theo said, shaking Chloe's hand. "Thank you for agreeing to do this on Christmas Eve. If you'll follow me, we can get started."
"It's not like I have anywhere to be for the holidays," Chloe thought as she hefted her camera bag onto her shoulder and followed after Theo.
"I hate to do this," Theo said as they waited for the elevator. "But we need you to sign a non-disclosure agreement before we start."
"May I ask why?"
"You'll see once we actually get you into the studio," Theo said as they stepped onto the elevator.
Chloe nodded. She had photographed celebrities before, so signing an NDA was not an unusual request.
"I wonder who I'm photographing," Chloe thought as she followed Theo off the elevator and to his office.
"Have a seat," Theo said, indicating a chair across from a desk.
Chloe set her camera bag down next to the chair and sat. Theo rummaged around his desk and pulled out a folder.
"I think you'll find it's a pretty standard agreement," Theo said, holding it out to Chloe.
Chloe took it and started reading. The wording was the same as other NDAs she'd signed.
"May I have a pen?" Chloe asked when she had finished reading.
Theo handed her a pen, and Chloe signed the agreement.
"I'll make sure you have a copy before you leave today," Theo said.
~~ 25 Days of BeChloe Christmases 2022 ~~
Chloe walked into the studio and looked around. She smiled at the familiarity of the lights and filters. She set her camera bag down and retrieved her favorite.
"Do you mind if I take a few throwaway shots?" Chloe asked Sarah, the woman Theo had bring her to the studio.
"That's fine," Sarah said. "We can reset anything you need us to change. Just let me know."
"Is there anything, in particular, you're looking for in the photos?"
"Theo wants something sexy so it will sell," Sarah said, chuckling. "You may find that the artist is of a different opinion on what they want."
"Yikes," Chloe mumbled, chuckling. "I hope I can find a happy in-between."
"I've seen your photos," Sarah said. "I'm sure you'll do just fine."
Chloe smiled and raised the camera. She looked through the lens and snapped a couple of quick shots. She pulled the camera down and looked through what she had taken.
"Can I get this light moved about six inches to the right? It's casting a weird shadow."
"Certainly," Sarah said.
Chloe waited for the light to be moved and then took a few more shots. After looking through those, she smiled at Sarah and said, "That's much better. Mr. Burnett said there would be a laptop for me to download the photos onto."
"Yes," Sarah said. "It's set up right over here."
Chloe plugged her camera into the laptop to ensure everything was working as it should. She then took her camera and starting moving around the studio, checking shots to find the best angle and location for the shots the studio had requested.
She stood by a wall and pointed the camera down a hallway. She caught movement to one side and moved the camera to see Sarah in the frame; she quickly snapped the shot.
She realized Sarah was talking to someone walking next to her so she moved the camera and a face popped into her view. A face she knew.
Chloe gasped out a "Fuck" as she lowered the camera and then raised it back up again. "I can't believe this." Chloe mumbled, unsure of what to do.
When she noticed the two women coming toward her she quickly turned around the corner and put her back against the wall. She peeked out when she heard the voices turning in a different direction. She let out the breath she was holding and quickly made her way back over to the laptop.
Chloe set her camera down and put her head in her hands.
"Of all the people I could have been hired to photograph, it had to be Beca," Chloe thought, chewing her lip. "I should at least say hi. I mean, it's been five years, she's can't still be mad at me, right?" Chloe sighed as her inner monologue continued. "Who am I kidding? I broke her heart. I'll just stay behind the lights so she can't see me. I can do this. She doesn't have to see me for me to take her picture. Yeah, that''ll work." Chloe rubbed her temples. "Oh, God, why is seeing her having such an affect on me? And, why does she have to look so good? Screw it, I can't do this."
Chloe grabbed her camera and started to stuff it into her bag.
"Chloe?" Sarah said from behind Chloe. "Is everything alright?"
"What?" Chloe asked, acting as if she was searching for something. "Everything's fine. Ah, there it is."
Chloe turned and faced Sarah.
"I decided to try a different lens," Chloe said, holding up the lens in her hand.
"Um, okay," Sarah said. "We're ready to start whenever you are."
"Great," Chloe said. "Can we get the lights turned on?"
"James, lights on, please," Sarah said.
The lights came on and Chloe could saw Beca raise her hand and shade her eyes.
"Perfect," Chloe said, moving to the spot she had chosen to shoot the photos from.
"Where do you want Beca?" Sarah asked.
"What?" Chloe asked. "Oh, I'll leave that up to you and her. I can shoot her anywhere."
Sarah walked over to Beca.
"Why don't we start with a few shots of you sitting on the stool?" Sarah said.
"Okay," Beca said and sat on the stool, grimacing as she looked at the lights.
"Try to pretend like you're enjoying yourself," Sarah said.
"I can't see anything with those lights shining in my face," Beca said.
Chloe put the camera to her eye and snapped a few candid shots of Beca.
Sarah walked over to Beca and fluffed her hair; then she started messing with the buttons on Beca's shirt.
"Let's just," Sarah said as she attempted to unbutton two more of the buttons.
"Stop it," Beca said, smacking at Sarah's hands. "Two buttons are plenty."
"Sex sells, Beca," Sarah said. "You know the studio wants something provocative for your cover."
"I don't care," Beca said, rebuttoning the two buttons Sarah managed to unbutton.
"Same old Beca," Chloe muttered and giggled.
Beca's head shot up, and she squinted her eyes to see who giggled. She couldn't see anyone behind the lights and shook her head.
"Everything okay?" Sarah asked.
"Um, yeah," Beca said, chuckling. "That giggle reminded me of someone."
Chloe gasped and put her camera to her face so no one could see her blushing. She looked through the lens, and Beca was smiling, so she snapped the photo. She moved around a bit and snapped a few more while Beca was relaxed and at ease.
"Chloe?" Sarah called out loudly to get Chloe's attention.
Chloe's head snapped around, and she looked like a deer caught in headlights.
"Chloe?" Beca said, pushing past Sarah and walking toward Chloe. She was smiling as she said, "I knew that giggle sounded familiar."
Chloe stood there, wishing the floor would open up and swallow her.
"Um, yeah," Chloe said. "It was me."
"What? I don't get a famous Beale hug after all these years," Beca said, holding her arms out to the side.
"I'm just trying to keep it professional," Chloe said, not moving.
Beca's smile and arms dropped.
"Oh, sorry, my mistake," Beca said, turning to go back to the stool.
Instead of taking a seat, Beca walked past the stool and toward her dressing room in the back.
"Beca!?" Sarah called out, hurrying after Beca.
Chloe swallowed and looked down at the floor, wiping a tear from her eye.
"Jesus, Chloe," she muttered. "What is wrong with you?"
~~ 25 Days of BeChloe Christmases 2022 ~~
Beca stormed into her dressing room and attempted to slam the door. Sarah caught it before it closed and stepped inside, closing the door behind her.
"What the Hell was that?" Sarah asked.
"I know her," Beca said. "Or I knew her."
"Who? Chloe?"
"Yeah."
"Is working with her going to be a problem for you?" Sarah asked. "Because we're on a tight deadline, and I don't know if we'll be able to find another photographer of her caliber on such short notice, especially during the holidays. Can't you put your feelings aside and just get through this?"
"It's not me you have to worry about," Beca said. "You saw what just happened. I was trying to reconnect, and she blew me off."
"She said she wanted to keep things professional," Sarah said. "I admire her for that."
"Admire her?" Beca scoffed. "I'm the star, you're supposed to be kissing my ass and making sure I'm happy. I am not happy."
"Having a temper tantrum because someone wouldn't hug you is not a good look on you," Sarah said. "You need to take a page out of Chloe's book and keep it professional. Now, get back out there, and let's get this done."
"Fine," Beca said. "But I want to talk to Chloe first. If you can get her to talk to me, I'll be professional, and we can finish the shoot, and all will be right with the world. Otherwise, you'd better change your Christmas plans because you'll be looking for another photographer."
Sarah stared at Beca; Beca crossed her arms and stared back at her.
"Fine," Sarah said. "I'll go talk to Chloe and see if she'll come talk to you. Just be nice, okay?"
"I will," Beca said and held up three fingers. "Scout's honor."
~~ 25 Days of BeChloe Christmases 2022 ~~
Beca spent the next few minutes pacing in her dressing room. She stopped when there was a soft knock on the door. Beca opened the door to Chloe standing there.
"Sarah said you wanted to talk to me," Chloe said, standing with her arms around her waist.
"Come in," Beca said.
Chloe stepped in, and Beca closed the door. Beca looked at Chloe; Chloe was staring at the ground.
"What the hell, Chloe," Beca said. "Is hugging really that repulsive to you or something?"
"No," Chloe said. "You just surprised me. I wasn't expecting you to want to talk to me, let alone hug me."
"Why? Because you broke up with me and broke my heart. Or don't you remember that?"
"Of course, I remember," Chloe said. "I remember every second of every moment we spent together. I loved you, Beca, and that day was-. I wish I handled it better-" Chloe stopped and stood looking at Beca. "I wish things had gone differently."
"It wouldn't have mattered," Beca said, shaking her head. "You still would have broken up with me. You would have still broken my heart."
"We were leaving for colleges across the country from each other, Beca," Chloe said, running a hand through her hair. "And I believed that breaking up was the best thing to do."
"Are you sure that's the reason?" Beca asked. "Or was it because you weren't willing to try, and walking away was easier?"
"I loved you, Beca," Chloe said, barely holding it together.
"You said that already," Beca said. "It doesn't change anything."
"May I finish?" Chloe asked.
Beca nodded and looked down at the floor.
"I loved you even after we were no longer together," Chloe said. "And seeing you again today made me realize that I never stopped loving you."
Beca scoffed. "Are you trying to break my heart again? Because that's just cruel."
"No, I'm trying to tell you that I still love you," Chloe said. "I never stopped loving you."
"Loving me wasn't enough to keep us together back then," Beca said. "How can I be sure it's enough now?"
"Give me a chance to make it up to you," Chloe said. "To prove to you that I still love you. I'm not the same person I was then. I've grown up, and I'm ready to do whatever is necessary to prove that I'm not going anywhere. Are you willing to give us another chance?"
Beca held her hand out to Chloe. "Let's finish the photo shoot and then we can go somewhere and talk some more. How does that sound?"
"It sounds like we might be trying again," Chloe said, taking Beca's hand.
"I think you might be right," Beca said as they walked out of the room hand-in-hand.
~~ 25 Days of BeChloe Christmases 2022 ~~
"I take it the talk went well," Sarah said when she saw Beca holding Chloe's hand.
"Yeah," Beca said, smiling.
Chloe smiled at Beca and reached up to Beca's shirt.
"What are you doing?" Beca asked, looking down at Chloe's hand as she unbuttoned 2 buttons.
"Sex sells," Chloe said, winking at Beca.
"She's right," Sarah said. "Let's get this shot so we can go home. I have a hot date waiting for me."
"So does Beca," Chloe said, picking up her camera and looking at Beca. "Go sit on the stool."
"Were you always this bossy?" Beca asked as she sat on the stool.
Chloe didn't say anything; she just turned on the floor fan and tilted it up so it was blowing Beca's hair. Chloe smiled and started snapping pictures.

Bechloe - Amnesia AU (pt.2)
Something, Chloe thinks to herself, just doesn’t add up. She lays silently in the hospital bed she’s been in for seven months, still hearing the regular beep of her heart rate on a nearby monitor. Still hearing her nurse, Jessica, bustling around the room, gathering syringes from nearby draws and medication kept behind lock and key within small metal cabinets.
But her eyes remain on one figure and one figure only. Beca. Beca who is sat on a chair that’s positioned in line with her hips beside the bed. Beca who hasn’t released her hand once since she settled here twenty minutes ago. Beca who looks entirely exhausted and concerned, yet relieved all at once. Beca who just stares down at her hand while she methodically smooths her thumb across Chloe’s fingers over and over.
Chloe wonders what Beca’s story is. Wonders how long she’s been coming here for. Wonders why she’s been coming here. Wonders what life Beca has outside of this hospital. Beca seems comfortable enough in the room, which gives Chloe the impression that the woman knows the room well, just like she appears to know the routine of Chloe’s care. She doesn’t seem phased by Jessica’s movements or setup. Doesn’t jump when the metal cabinet has to be slammed a certain way to ensure it’s shut. (Chloe thinks she recognises the sound and wonders how often she heard it in her sleep over the months she’d been in a coma.)
“I just need to get someone to check the meds with me.” Jessica says as she steps out of the room, and Beca simply nods in her direction, as though the woman absolutely knows this without the nurse even having to say anything. Chloe continues to watch Beca. Continues to watch the way her long brown hair falls over her shoulder in loose waves - perfectly coloured and treated. She wonders what Beca’s career is for her to feel the need to have such perfect hair. After all, the impression Chloe has is that Beca’s dropped everything to be here by her side..
The door opens and both Chloe and Beca look to see a new nurse step inside. Chloe doesn’t know her. But Beca appears to. And the nurse appears to recognise her in return.
“Hi Chloe.” the woman says in a kind voice while she gently closes the door behind her and takes a step closer, “My name is Ashley, I’m one of the nurses who’s been looking after you during your time here. I’m just going to counter-check your meds with Jessica.”
Chloe doesn’t really know what to say. She can imagine over the months there’s been a lot of people looking after her. But she doesn’t recognise them. Not even their voices. The only person she feels like she knows - though she doesn’t know how - is Beca.
“Hey Beca.” Ashley goes on to say with a continued kind smile to Beca, “Nice to see you here during daylight hours.”
Beca does nothing but grunt in response, but a small amused smile is on her face while she looks back down at Chloe’s hand. Chloe looks back at Beca while the nurse turns her attention to the medication cabinet, unlocking it then consulting some paperwork.
So another part of the puzzle has been provided: Beca has only been visiting her overnight? Or in the evenings? Why? Had it been due to her work? Or other commitments? What other commitments did Beca have??
The door opens again and Jessica steps back inside the room with an air of calm and serenity, closing the door behind her before approaching Ashley with a sigh. The two stand side by side, consulting the paperwork.
“It’s all kicking off out there.” Chloe hears Jessica mumble to Ashley. Beca hears it too and glances over her shoulder at them.
“Is it our lot?” she enquires quietly. The two nurses look over at her with expressions that confirm Beca’s suspicion. Chloe still isn’t used to hearing Beca’s voice. But each time she does, she feels a renewed rush of warmth blanket her body. She feels safe and calm here with Beca holding her hand.
The two nurses, content with the medication doses, turn to the bed and calmly make their way over, Ashley standing at the foot of the bed while Jessica brings a small tray of filled syringes to Beca’s side. Beca appears to know the drill, and releases Chloe’s hand so Jessica can access the cannula.
“Chloe can you confirm for me your name and date of birth?” Jessica tentatively asks while flushing the cannula with sterile fluid. Chloe’s not been asked this yet. She looks from the nurse up to the ceiling, and her eyes flutter closed for a moment. She feels a plastic tag or something around her ankle being moved slightly. She thinks. It’s hard, but she tries. And after a few beats, she attempts to answer as confidently as possible.
“Chloe Beale.” she croaks, her throat still sore, “June 20th...1990.”
“Correct.” Jessica confirms in a kind and impressed tone. Chloe opens her eyes to see that Ashley had been consulting an ID tag that is attached loosely around her ankle.
“Beca, your husband’s just asking for a quick word with you?” Ashley says in a calm voice. Beca hums slightly, as if confirming she’s heard what the nurse has just said.
Chloe’s stomach flips, but she isn’t sure why. Beca has a husband. She’s not sure why she hasn’t assumed that already. Do they have children too? Her eyes drift down to Beca’s left hand. Sure enough, the woman has a wedding band on, snugly set beside a beautiful large engagement ring. Whoever Beca’s husband is, he has money. The rings look expensive.
“Are you okay here for a couple of minutes while I speak to him?” Beca asks Chloe with caution, “Because if not, he can wait.”
Chloe knows she’s important. She must be if Beca is choosing her over her husband. He only wants a quick word and still Beca is willing to push him to one side if it means keeping Chloe happy. As she looks deep into Beca’s eyes, she feels her heart tug. She still doesn’t know why Beca makes her feel this way.
“I’ll be okay.” she confirms slowly. And she means it. She will be okay. She feels safe with the two nurses here. She watches as Beca hesitates.
“We won’t leave her Beca.” Jessica assures in a kind tone, having administered the final syringe of medication. “Take all the time you need.”
The last sentence is something that makes Chloe feel a little scared. What if Beca gets caught up and takes ages? What if she takes so long that she forgets to come back? What if Chloe has to speak to those people claiming to be her family instead? What if they persuade the nurses that they should take Chloe with them? What if Chloe never sees Beca again?
Her heart rate increases and both Jessica and Ashley seem to notice. As does Beca, who matches the nurses’ glances up at the monitor that Chloe is hooked up to.
“I’ll be as quick as I can.” Beca says, sharply rising to her feet, “Then I promise I’ll be right back.”
Chloe’s initial panic settles when Beca darts forward to place a snap of a kiss on her forehead before scuttling out of the room. She sees the two nurses give each other a knowing smile before they wander in separate directions to different sides of the room to do a couple of tasks.
“You know,” she hears Ashley say while the nurse gathers some bed sheets from a nearby draw, “Beca’s been here every night from the moment you were brought here.”
Chloe’s eyebrows rise. Beca’s been here? Every night? For seven months??
“Why the night?” Chloe croaked, wincing slightly before letting out a cough. She feels thirsty and her mouth feels dry. Jessica’s instincts seem tip-top, and she quickly sets to filling a small jug with a fresh bottle of water.
“Because your family wouldn’t let her visit so she had to do it secretly overni-”
“-Ashley!” Jessica hisses while rummaging through a draw.
“What?” Ashley responds innocently, but the smile across her face gives Chloe the impression she’s thrilled to divulge some gossip. “She was gonna find out at some point.”
“Yeah but she should talk to Beca about it.”
Chloe’s mind feels jumbled as she thinks about what Ashley has just said. Why had her family not wanted Beca to visit her? From what she’s seen of Beca, the woman seems devoted and wonderful. Hardly the type of person you’d want to keep away.
Jessica moves to her side, and pulls a small sponge lollipop from the jug of water. The sight of the drip alert’s Chloe’s natural instinct and the redhead opens her mouth. The nurse sweeps the sponge around Chloe’s dry lips and mouth, around her gums, the roof of her mouth, and over and under her tongue. Chloe automatically clamps down, desperate to suck the sponge dry, but as she does and tries to swallow she coughs. She panics.
Ashley is on the other side of her within seconds, smoothing her hand across Chloe’s back while Jessica puts the jug to one side. The two nurses speak calmly to Chloe until the redhead finally lets out a sigh of relief and sits back in bed again.
“We need to help train your body to swallow again, Chloe.” Jessica said in a soft tone, “Your body’s getting all the fluid and sustenance it needs from your feeding tube.”
Feeding tube? Chloe brings her hand to her nose and that’s when she remembers she has something going up it. A strip of tape is across her nose and around the tube to keep it secure. And all of a sudden she feels overwhelmed. It’s not enough that she’s been asleep for seven months and has lost her memory of many many things. But it looks as though she has to stay in hospital for the foreseeable future until she’s learnt how to be human again..
The door to the room opens and Beca steps inside, closing the door behind her gently while giving Chloe an apologetic smile. Just her presence is enough to draw Chloe back down into a state of calm. She can do it. She can recover if Beca’s by her side.
“So it looks like I’ll be needing that fold-out bed tonight, Jess.” Beca says as she slowly approaches her chair by the bed. Chloe notices the amused expressions on the nurse’s faces.
“Seven months of nights in that chair, and now you’re going to finally try the fold-out bed?” Ashley replies with a grin, slowly heading for the door herself.
“Well Jesse’s heading home to sort the kids out and pick me up some pyjamas. If Chloe’s okay with me staying overnight of course.”
Chloe had momentarily paused all attention on the conversation the second Beca had mentioned that she has kids back home. Kids. Beca has kids. And a husband. And yet she still spends much of her time here by Chloe’s side. Why?? What was she to Beca??
“Of course.” Chloe replies in a voice just little over a whisper, and she sees Beca let out a gentle sigh of relief. The brunette takes a seat and takes Chloe’s hand again.
Chloe gives her a tired sigh. She has so many questions. But she knows she has time - potentially all the time in the world - to ask them. Beca seems endlessly present and patient. And this knowledge fills Chloe with hope. Everything’s going to be okay.
