So yeahh- last post and random UT things
“The Surprise” From the children’s book Shining Hours. Illustration attributed to Emil Schmidt, 1878.
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
BOTS AND SCAM COMMENTS ON AO3
WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW TO SPOT THEM
okay, I thought I should make this post since there has been an influx of scammers plaguing AO3 comments section and people are falling victims to them. so here it is;
WHAT THEY ARE
so far, there are three main types of these scam bots
bots that tell you AO3 is deleting works, and that you should delete the works yourself because your entire account will be affected if your works get deleted by AO3
bots that tell you your works are terrible
bots that tell you they want to draw comic panels from your works
ALL OF THESE ARE SCAM WITH MALICE INTENTIONS
bots that tell you AO3 is deleting works, and that you should delete the works yourself because your entire account will be affected if your works get deleted by AO3 are just trying to get you to delete your works, most certainly because they want to steal and/or use your works to train their AI and, once you delete your works, it becomes extremely difficult, almost impossible for you to claim ownership of your works when the original works have been deleted. AO3 IS NOT DELETING ANY WORKS.
bots that tell you your works are terrible are also just trying to get you to delete your works, most certainly because they want to steal and/or use your works to train their AI and, once you delete your works, it becomes extremely difficult, almost impossible for you to claim ownership of your works when the original works have been deleted. (more examples here and here)
bots that tell you they want to draw comic panels from your works are trying to hack your password, personal data and credit card information (they will say they see potentials in your work and are interested in drawing comic panels from it, and then they will ask you to discuss this with them on discord where you will have to pay/commission them for the “comics” you will never get, but you will get your password hacked, personal data and credit card information breached and stolen instead, do not fall for them).
HOW TO SPOT THEM
what all these 3 types of bots have in common is that;
most of them (keyword, most, not all) are guest users or empty accounts that have just been recently created.
their comments are all the same copied and pasted scripts that they mass leave on lots of authors’ works at random.
they will ask you to contact them outside of ao3 by giving you their discord, or instagram, or other social media handle.
their comments are all vague, in the sense that there will be no mention of any specific characters’ names, no mention of any specific scenes or events from your works (granted, they need to be vague because they are bots, they never actually read your works, and they have to be able to use the same comments on other writers’ works too).
EDIT: I’ve been told they got “smarter” and are now mentioning characters by names and also specific scenes from the story. Most definitely because they ran your fic through AI and let AI write comments for them. So basically, if a comment, from someone you don’t know, ends in something along the lines of “I’d like to draw a comic panel about this”, “can we chat on discord (or anywhere outside of ao3)” or anything that’d require your email or other personal information, always assume that it’s 90% a scam.
report them for spam then delete their comments when/if you get them.
please spread this if you can. us writers gotta look out for each other. stay safe, everybody ♡
EDIT (Dec 10, 2025): NEW TYPE OF BOTS WHO THREATEN PEOPLE WITH LEGAL ACTIONS
EDIT (Dec 15, 2025): BOTS IMPERSONATING LEGIT USERS, WITH REGISTERED ACCOUNTS, BY USING THESE LEGIT USERS’ AO3 NAMES AS THEIR GUEST-USER NAMES IN THEIR GUEST COMMENTS
EDIT (Dec 22, 2025): BOTS PROMOTING THEIR APP/PROGRAM AND ACTING AS AN AD (WHICH I BELIEVE IS AGAINST AO3’S POLICIES) ON COMMENTS SECTION
EDIT (Jan 16, 2026): BOTS TRYING TO PASS FOR GENUINE COMMENTS BUT FAILING AND ACCIDENTALLY MENTIONING NAMES OF RANDOM CHARACTERS THAT ARE NOT PRESENT IN THE FICS OR THE FANDOMS
EDIT (Jan 18,2026): BOTS TRYING TO ACCUSE INNOCENT WRITERS OF USING AI, BY COMMENTING ON OTHER WRITERS' WORKS AND TELLING THESE OTHER WRITERS THAT 'THIS WORK BY THIS SPECIFIC WRITER IS AI'
EDIT (Jan 30, 2026): BOTS TRYING TO TRICK YOU INTO DELETING AND DESTROYING ALL THE WORKS IN YOUR COMPUTER/FILES/DRAFTS
EDIT (Jan 31, 2026): BOTS TRYING TO ATTACK YOU FOR THE LACK OF TRANS CHARACTERS IN YOUR FICS (DOESN’T MATTER IF YOUR FIC HAS TRANS CHARACTERS OR NOT)
EDIT (Feb 2, 2026): BOTS TRYING TO ACCUSE YOU OF TERRIBLE THINGS
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN REPORT COMMENTS FROM REGISTERED ACCOUNTS
Second part of me being self indulgent! This time with guys!
This is kinda fun to do so if you'd like something like this with a character you like inbox is always open!
How would they act when they're in love? (Kaeya, Baizhu, Itto, Alhaitham, Ifa)
Reader is: gender neutral
Kaeya
A constant contradiction.
There is a lot he had to unpack. Maybe a little bit too much. It was overwhelming to a point where he suspected that he had it bad for you, more so than he thought.
You were close, that was for sure. He trusted you more than himself sometimes. Whatever was between you two felt far more vulnerable than he was comfortable with.
One thing you can expect for certain is that he's going to pretend a lot. Pretend he doesn't care, pretend he's not taking you seriously. Just anything to not allow himself get too attached.
He'd joke around, acting like a dramatic lover. Declaring how much he had missed you even if you talked an hour ago. Another times he'd find himself jealous whenever someone was getting too close to you- but he knew not to cause a scene.
Yet he'd distance himself from you. Despite yearning for you he didn't exactly indulge the thought of you being actually close. He wasn't sure what was holding him back. Maybe the voice in the back of his head telling him that you're better off without him, or maybe something else he wasn't aware of.
Still, no matter the nature of your relationship you made him happy. So even if sometimes he acted odd at the end of the day you felt how much he cared.
He always paid great attention to everything you said and some of his small gestures were incredibly romantic, but he'd purposefully ruin the moment when he'd be losing his ground and falling for you even deeper. Not until he was sure he'd be right to chase after it all.
Baizhu
Making excuses to see you.
Baizhu was never one to focus too much on relationships. He was constantly busy so it made sense he didn't search for a partner.
Lucky- or unlucky depending on how you look at it- for him, you found him first. And you were a constant reminder that he does actually crave a bit of romance every once in a while.
With his teasing nature your casual conversations were mixed with slight comments that were awfully easy to overlook. That was just how he wanted to play it. He got some thoughts out of his system and that was enough to share his affections, for now.
When you're away he sometimes he wonders how your day went, sometimes though when his mind was still at work mode he wondered if you were in good health and thinking if he should check on you when he has time.
Soon he found himself turning those thoughts into reality. Not often enough that he wasn't at the pharmacy when he was needed, but he would often excuse small visits.
Slowly it looked like he was nagging... But at some point his excuses were so ridiculous you knew that he just wanted to spend time with you so you enabled that to some degree. He made sure to respect the boundaries you've set.
This whole situation was ridiculous to Changsheng and the second you were out of earshot she'd complain about whatever you two had going on. Pointing out everything he said and explaining to him in detail how him thinking you'd fall for any of these lies were a direct insult to your intelligence- he laughed her complaints off and moved on like she hasn't spoken a word.
Itto
His brain is the last to catch up...
Itto never gave much thought to what exactly he thinks about you. When you met things just clicked and he didn't question how great you'd get along.
Relationship with you- as a great buddy of course- just felt natural. So it wasn't any weird that he felt like time with you was ever so more special.
It also wasn't weird at all that he wanted to impress you, nor that every time you needed help he'd move the mountains if you needed it- he'd do it for all his friends!
His heart raced when you called him cool, he couldn't stand being away from you, and when your hand did as like as brush against his, it felt like his face was at a competition with his horns as to what's more red.
What it would get for him to notice... Was if he got teased by the boys about his obvious crushing. Without thinking he'd confirm it, cause why wouldn't he love someone so great!?
And that flustered moment was when everything clicked. After his realization he felt like everything suddenly started making sense.
From that point on he'd instead try to figure out a great grand gesture he could do for you to express his feelings. But while he was thinking about it he changed the tracks a little and thought more what YOU would like, not what he feels like would be cool to do for the sake of it.
Alhaitham
It's a natural part of human experience.
He never thought much about romance. It wasn't like he was completely uninterested, but he always knew he wasn't going to chase looking for it like some people might.
His happiness never depended on wether or not someone would return his affections, thought of being rejected wasn't something he was afraid of either.
Although... Some of his views on the matter changed once he slowly started to realize that he might be interested in you. He definitely would be disappointed if you were not to return his feelings, but it wouldn't be the end of the world either.
Looking forward to spending time with anyone wasn't something he'd expect to be feeling so strongly. Luckily the new development was hardly a nuisance to him.
He had plenty of free time, so adjusting his schedule to yours was reasonable. Even just to share a quick meal together, or a small conversation about your day.
Usually he found smalltalk bothersome, but it coming from you felt more interesting. Probably because the topics you chose were usually of his interest as well.
Yet in the end he didn't make big deal out of his feelings for you. To him it was a simple case of asking you out officially. Time or place didn't matter to him as much as the message he had, so he wouldn't be wasting much time before making his move even if it would lack romantic atmosphere.
Ifa
A recharge he desperately needed.
Ever since the war came to an end, his workload sure was doubled, sometimes feels like it tripled even. As a caring friend, you checked on him everyday. Sometimes bringing him some food or snacks, and other times just offering some human company (no offense to Cacucu).
He wasn't much the kind of person to neglect himself like that. But after everything that happened he just wanted to make sure people and saurians don't grin and bear it. So of course he couldn't ignore those in need.
You lost the count of how many times you heard "You're a lifesaver bro" or something among those lines. It was true too, you were his hero every day.
Okay... Maybe it was more than that. He knew that he liked you. With the way Cacucu sometimes was laughing he suspected his saurian companion knew too.
So he wouldn't be surprised if you knew too. He wasn't ashamed of it so it's not like he'd freak out. Okay, maybe a little bit. But that's because you're a great bro-
And here was his main issue. He'd normally approach you and maybe ask you out but he wanted to avoid calling you in that dude-bro language in that context.
In the end he would be sometimes a little awkward around you, but that would be just because he'd try to get these words out of his vocabulary when addressing you. So each time he called you that way, he decided to let his confession wait for a better day...
Gold, Silver, and Bronze!🥇🥈🥉
Now as sisters and with a complex sibling dynamic.
did you know 24k gold is so soft you can scratch it with a fingernail? Because bronze knows
Remember when Lil Nas X beautifully explored his sexuality, seduced and killed the devil to the banger of all time, and instead of cheering on this openly gay and proud Black artist for his artistry and fighting back against respectability politics, suddenly said respectability politics was all the Queerest Place on the Internet cared about? Hm. Wonder what happened there.
Anyway I miss him and hope he's doing better with his mental health 🙏🏾
web weave finds that made me want to claw my eyes out
I know this is meant to be funny but it actually makes such a good point about how ADHD and executive dysfunction can impact people in really major ways, including financially
There’s a really good book all about this.

It's Juneteenth yall. And I'm not letting this day go unmarked.
Black people fight for everybody. We stand in solidarity with women, lgbt people, poor people all over the world of every skin color and background. Every religion and nationality.
Today, stand with us. Be with us. Tell a black person you love them. Hug a black person (with consent). Ask that hot black girl out today. Make a black person smile. Black lives matter to everybody and you matter to us.
Stand with us on Juneteenth like we stand with you all year round, and I hope a happy Pride month continues for all of us

Obligatory self reblog because Tumblr doesn't ever let anybody see my stuff unless I literally post it repeatedly
I'd love if you'd reblog this and keep it moving, with love
BY THE WAY, if you're an aspiring writer, there's a great opportunity right now to get your work critiqued!
the Literary Auction for Change is a charity event raising money to help underrepresented groups enter the world of publishing. specifically, they're offering fellowships and mentorship programs to marginalized people seeking to become literary agents (because how you can expect diversity in books if there's no diversity among agents?)
you can browse through the various packages on auction, and probably find something that would give you a boost. query letter critiques, manuscript critiques, videos calls with various agents, and also signed books, if you're more of a reader. take a look!
i can't express how absolutely important it is that when you make an edgy, brooding, badass character who's tough as nails and good at fighting and whatever, you HAVE to give them at least one reason to become completely helpless and pathetic. you have a panic attack quota to fulfill.
This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.
