I had a dream that Microsoft introduced an app called "Clutter" for making collages and moodboards from your camera roll.
Basically, you make a collage by cutting out bits of pictures, and when you click one of the pictures in the collage it opens up into the original full picture.
It was the kind of thing that would have been big a decade ago, before every app had to be uber-monetized. It kinda blew up among like the tumblr and pinterest crowds, but it had one problem:
You see, rather than have a lasso select tool or something like every other photo editing program from Photoshop to GIMP, Clutter had this tool that was meant to feel like an X-Acto knife, and felt like cutting paper a rusty, dull, off-brand X-Acto knife.
So some enterprising developer on tumblr who goes by "ClutterHater" made a mod, creatively called "ClutterHater's tool" which eventually became a standalone app called "Cutter."
ClutterHater became an internet sensation, but remained anonymous, didn't do formal interviews, and refused to take offers to place ads on or sell Cutter. They were treated as the most based person on the internet just for making a moderately better cutting tool for a half-functional photo editing program.
After a mere two months, a private equity firm offered $724,000 to buy Cutter, lock stock and barrel. ClutterHater turned them down, saying "I just want Microsoft to fix their shit."
Shortly afterwards, they did. Microsoft introduced Adobe-style selection and masking tools into Clutter, and ClutterHater pulled a Flappy Bird, and took Cutter down from the internet.
The hype around Clutter ironically kinda died down after they fixed it, aside from a small but passionate group of fans (and modders inspired by ClutterHater!) who call themselves "ClutterFuckers"
At the end of the dream I was designing a thumbnail for a video on the history of this whole debacle. I think I was using Affinity for the text: "$724,000. GONE in 2 Months." I needed a compelling background image, and then I remembered I still had Cutter installed on an old phone somewhere.
