I didn't realize today was X-Men day, but fortunately I had been working on this drawing over the weekend. I tried something new stylewise and I might be obsessed. 😍😍

I love animation history and one of the things that always baffled me was how did animators draw the cars in 101 Dalmatians before the advent of computer graphics?

Any rigid solid object is extremely challenging for 2D artists to animate because if one stray line isn’t kept perfectly in check, the object will seem to wobble and shift unnaturally.

Even as early as the mid 80’s Disney was using a technique where they would animate a 3D object and then apply a 2D filter to it. This practice could be applied to any solid object a character interacts with: from lanterns a character is holding, to a book (like in Atlantis), or in the most extreme cases Cybernetic parts (like in Treasure Planet).

But 101 Dalmatians was made WAY before the advent of this technology. So how did they do the Cruella car chase sequence at the end of the film?

The answer is so simple I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me sooner:

They just BUILT the models and painted them white with black outlines 🤣

That was the trick. They’re not actually 2D animated, they’re stop motion. They were physical models painted white and filmed on a white background. The black outlines become the lineart lines and they just xeroxed the frame onto an animation cel and painted it like any other 2D animated frame.

That’s how they did it! Isn’t that amazing? It’s such a simple low tech solution but it looks so cool in the final product.

Just came across an old friend’s (who is no longer my friend) tumblr blog tonight where they vague posted about me and infer that me standing up for them when they are being treated like shit makes them more pissed off than the being treated like shit?? Because of some lopsided ideal that kindness = allowing yourself to be walked over.

If you think I’m a bad person for trying to stand up for you when you’re treated like shit right in front of my eyes then I’m glad we aren’t friends anymore.

Putting kindness out into the world and letting go and forgiving in the sake of that cause lets the bad fester. Bad which corrupts the good.

Once upon a time I told that ex friend of mine that they don’t know what it means to stand up for their friends, to stand in the way of someone causing harm and I honestly can’t believe how incredibly correct I was. And even now, knowing what they think of me and how they ‘dodged a bullet’ by loosing my friendship, I have never regretted it. And I know myself well enough to know that I never will.

I was the one who made your friends respect your interests.

I was the one that supported you leaving your abusive family

I was the one who had to MAKE your sister show up to the hospital simply because you requested her there after you were admitted.

I was the one who treated you like a fucking sister.

I was the one who did all of it without a second thought, and without asking anything from you but a SLIVER of the respect and care I gave you.

Caleb's gutting grief and loss, the vulnerability. Molly holding on tight, refusing to let go. The way Caleb Widogast admits he's never truly known defeat until losing Molly. How Mollymauk can't bear to let go of him in turn--
