I’m a big believer in the idea that a fight in fiction should primarily show, not the relative skill or coolness of the combatants, but their motivation, beliefs or state of mind. That the main purpose of combat in fiction should be to demonstrate and reveal the true nature of the characters involved, show what they’ve learned, and show where they are at on their hero’s journey so you can advance the story. To use the fight as set up and pay off for character information revelled to the audience.

And that’s why, unironically, I think that one of the best fights in any work in fiction is the “dumpling” fight in Kung Fu Panda. It’s up there with ATLA in terms of using a combat sequence for storytelling.
