part of my season 4 art series that I affectionately call "worlds most fucked up cannibal road trip" in my head. If you haven't seen the other posts, the context is that they lived in Cuba for a while, but had to leave after Will killed a guy after he recognized them in a museum earlier that day. Jack found their apartment a couple days after they left the country. This happens months later.
In my ideal season 4 they meet Jack again and Jack survives and no one goes to prison. Tbh Jack saying he had hoped Will died is actually a really nice thing to say because it means he chose to try to believe Will was a good man and remember him that way.
lol Will touching Hannibal's tie like that...you know he's DEAD serious when he pulls the eyebrow raise+"you're not even allowed to touch my arm until I know you'll behave" move. What do you think Will whispered in his ear?
(ps I dont know if they ever said anything about whether or not Bedelia survived, but I always imagined they killed her after the dinner)
mutuals I’m burying your body in the soft cool earth and giving the mound a little pat
Recently, I’ve heard a story about two men. They are friends, bonded, with a natural want to be close to one another. Who can say what they might have done privately? While they were in the view of others, however, they took care to keep apart. So far apart, in fact, that in one look strangers saw through their facade, and mocked them for their empty performance. By worrying about appearances, they drew more attention to themselves than they ever would have gotten if they had simply acted out of their wants and desires. Their created charade of apathy only made their intimacy more apparent. Tell me, Will. Are you going to keep sitting on the other side of the hot tub, or will you come sit next to me?
FWIW, "mauve" was one of the coal-tar dyes developed in the mid-19th century that made eye-wateringly bright clothing fashionable for a few decades.
It was an eye-popping magenta purple
HOWEVER, like most aniline dyes, it faded badly, to a washed-out blue-grey ...
...which was the color ignorant youngsters in the 1920s associated with “mauve”.
(This dress is labeled "mauve" as it is the color the above becomes after fading).
They colored their vision of the past with washed-out pastels that were NOTHING like the eye-popping electric shades the mid-Victorians loved. This 1926 fashion history book by Paul di Giafferi paints a hugely distorted, I would say dishonest picture of the past.
Ever since then this faded bluish lavender and not the original electric eye-watering hot pink-purple is the color associated with the word “mauve”.
Art conservator here! I did part of my master's degree on Perkin's mauve dye (which he named mauveine) and it's a violet purple, not quite so magenta as that first dress pic. I got to do chemical analysis on an actual 1856 sample of the dye! And the sample I dissolved and painted out on paper most resembled Pantone 266, which apparently translates to hex #7329b0. Mauveine is significant because it was THE FIRST synthetic dye ever made.
And it was actually quite fade-resistant! Much moreso than natural dyes. People in the 1920s would have known about their grandmothers' super bright colors, because those dresses were still folded up in the attic or still in scraps in patchwork quilts, and their grannies were right there to tell them (just like my 2020s niece recently tried on some 1960s dresses that belongd to my mom). And the word magenta has kept its meaning, even though it was also an aniline dye of the same era (and might be the dye in that first dress, aka fuchsine). So I don't know why the word mauve came to mean a muddy pale color, but I don't think it's because later generations were ignorant about historic dye colors. Apparently the color name "mauve taupe" was first used in 1925 for a muddy purple, so maybe that was the start of the shift.
PS, mauve is named for the French word for the mallow flower (probably this one, Malva sylvestris). I love it.
PS! (Sorry-not-sorry, I just really love mauveine history), read more about Perkin's mauve here! And look at this dress dyed with mauveine. Gorgeous! I can barely imagine how amazing that time must have been, to see previously unattainable brilliant flower colors on fabric. We're so used to having fabric in absolutely any color we want, but there just wasn't any purple dye like that ever before.
PPS (SORRY AGAIN!) I was curious about that first dress, and I searched around and found that it was listed on another tumblr as being mauveine, but that was incorrect. The dress lives at the V&A and they describe it as being a magenta dye, but they don't identify which dye. But also, the first picture posted here appears to have been color enhanced compared to the V&A's photos. Go and look, it's gorgeous.
The original color is absolutely gorgeous, I don't understand why anyone would feel the need to alter it.
hello please can I sleep in a studio ghibli bed it’s urgent
Okay there all look great with the EXCEPTION of Howl's bed, are you kidding me
Look at that thang. The duvet, the pillowcases- that shit is embroidered and beaded to FUCK. That's your victorian great-great-grandmother's fanciest display sheets for the decorative guest room nobody ever uses. You roll over the wrong way on one of those appliqué czech glass flowers and lose a goddamn eye. Abrasive as hell. Too delicate to machine-wash, too, so the fabric itself gotta be tough like sandpaper. That, or frayed all to shit, like you shift a little in the night and get sequins falling all over like a drunk queen in a bouncy castle. You know I'm right. Look at him. Look at how he's sleeping and tell me that man's so much as SAT on those sheets in his life. My girl Sophie did her best but we all know that's his fancy interior design hashtag #aesthetic Instagram influencer background room. He doesn't SLEEP there, he sleeps on the couch or on the floor or in the reclined seat of his busted-out Subaru in the garage that hasn't worked right in five years cause he doesn't know what an oil change is. That's the room he uses for makeup tutorials and Shien Hauls (derogatory). Look at that man. Look at him for five seconds and tell me he isn't gonna wake up in an hour crying over snagged hair and floral imprints on his face. What the HELL Sophie baby that blowdried bitch has a twelve step twice daily skin care routine and you're RUINING it. Walked right past his twin size flannel futon in the corner down the hall and dumped him in the biggest bed she could find like a bedazzled roadkill possum. Didn't even put his bonnet on. Sophie I love you so much but first thing he does after he chips his nails clawing his way out of that thing is get your Amelia Bedilia ass. I'm so sorry
This almost compares to that guy who wrote The Rant about hating Olaf
you mean this guy
Your post about Ed's trauma vs. the Stormtrooper fights is right on the money imo. What gets me is that it didn't have to be an impediment when there could have been a fuckery! The reunited Revenge crew, now even stronger b/c of Izzy's integration, could have pulled an amazing Theatre Kid con that highlighted Ed and Stede's creative chemistry and this underdog group's ability to Bugs Bunny their way past better fighters with no casualties. Instead, Ricky has the biggest fuckery of s2, wtf?
Re: This. I think the fandom might have made the idea of fuckeries more interesting and important than canon intended to, in hindsight.
Like the idea of doing piracy through primary theatre gay productions that upend the risk of dying in combat in favor of special effects hijinks was a really good comedy concept. And it worked well with the two main character types we got in S1 - silly theatrical underdog who cannot win a swordfight for the life of him + dramatic hidden depths guy who became a legendary pirate but can't actually kill people himself - and the rest of the crew's vibe in general - eclectic misfits that will not be intimidating anyone. I even liked it for Izzy! I know we liked to say he was from Black Sails but tbh he really wasn't, and the guy who slashed up Stede's shirt without breaking skin was made for selling that kind of bullshit as dangerous.
But - for all the extensive meta tracking how Stede's underdog trickery comes out on top again and again (primarily from Stede blogs, obviously, though everyone seemed to agree it was pretty solid) - canon only describes 2 instances as fuckeries: the introduction of the concept in 1x06, and Stede faking his death in 1x10. Everything else - even in S2 - is just fandom extending the concept because we think it's cool and makes sense. Ricky doesn't do "a fuckery", he just betrays Zheng with a trick and makes a pun about it.
Looking back, I think fuckeries only exist as a thing in OFMD meta because we liked the thought of them, and the kind of comedic canon they would support (team crafts, hijinks, no danger, muppet logic). I think S2 makes it clear canon only viewed a "fuckery" as the symbolic first step in Stede being a pirate. He's introduced to the concept when he's not ready yet, and then he successfully crafts and executes one at the end of S1 (against people who aren't trying to fight him, crucially) to show his rebirth. Now in S2 he's free to move onto real piracy - life threatening situations and swordfights. The penchant for trickery and underdog jokes is just character flavor, not an actual pursuit of its own.
That's why raids in 2x05 are just raids, talking in 2x06 is just talking, and the Navy dress-up in 2x08 is not an alternative to getting past the British mooks, but some kind of leg up on surprise attacking them (at least that's what it kinda looks like?). It's not "a fuckery" - it's a battle plan that can be sprinkled with hints of fuckery to spook, befuddle, or surprise. You still win with skill at violence.
Piracy is an action/adventure genre about killing your enemies with swords, guns, and cannons, and apparently OFMD was never looking to challenge that - just play in the space of our cast getting good (or maybe getting out).
Yeah, I think a healthy combo of fuckeries and more traditional piracy should’ve been the way to go. And if the show did want to pivot to traditional piracy, I think it should’ve done a much better job at explaining what that means for you know…. The two main characters who said either “hey why is piracy like this, and we should probably change that up a bit” or “wow I’ve been at this a while and I hate it and I wanna stop”
I think the fuckeries were so enjoyable because we could really see the thematic weight to them as well as the comedy, and with more traditional piracy, it leaves so many questions as to what’s all this supposed to mean that it just isn’t as fun. (At least for me)
Why set up two characters who are really hesitant to kill as quite an important detail of their characters and then just ditch it? It makes both the characters harder to understand and the violence sequences less fun to watch. Especially when they never discuss those hang ups again. I can’t tell if being able to kill now is supposed to be a personal victory or a loss for them. And by extension, I can’t tell if turning to (or away from) traditional piracy is supposed to be a personal victory or a loss for them.
flint's story in black sails is basically being told by literally everyone he meets captain you have to stop. your reputation as a pirate is too fearsome. your plan for nassau is too different. your puritan witch is too bad. they'll kill you. and ignoring literally all of them until he destroys himself and everyone around him.
honestly, same

I know the genie is out of the bottle and you can't go back but dear GOD I hate the mainstreamification of fandom so much
I do NOT want authors or showrunners or actors to acknowledge us or talk about fanfic or fanart or fan theories! I do NOT want people asking questions of the canon creators and getting them answered (make up your own answers, like god intended!) I do NOT want companies making jokey advertisements aimed toward fandom!
I know that fandom was never entirely underground but like... I miss that fourth wall existing, you know?
this is the chocolate guy’s wario
