One of the things I really like about To Shape A Dragon's Breath is the lack of secondhand embarrassment.
Because at some point, possibly unjustly, I started expecting the awkwardness of not knowing things to feel awkward or embarrassing in any story that was a variant of "stranger in a strange place "
And there's none of that because Anequs is just, so self assured and refuses to be embarrassed for not knowing things she has no reason to know. I love it. She's confident, willing to explain things, and entirely unwilling to take shit.
I didnt realize I was expecting that till I read this and it wasn't there, and again maybe its an unfair expectation cause I'm not certain when I picked it up. But I love the confidence.
And I love the lack of romantic conflict, because I'm so used to that in stories. I kept expecting Theod to take things worse because I'm so used to characters reacting badly to say "I'm challenging how you grew up", I definitely didn't expect him to react well to Anequs wanting to court both him and Liberty and its just.
There's conflict in media I've grown used to seeing and the fact that it wasn't here was just. Really really good to read. All the conflict is from the outside. Right there, in the main group, you have characters that will talk things out. I love it.
This right here is one of the (many!) reasons I enjoy this series. So many series with young/new adult heroines put the focus on their being awkward and unsure and worried about what people will think of them. Anequs is just walking along thinking "My people love me, Kassaqua loves me, and I love me, so all these white folks and their internalized racism can go take a long run off a short pier."

I'm retroactively recognizing these as posts as being about the artist currently known as "Penny the Deals Warlock" and let me just say, I am thrilled to to realize that OP's family has been like this The Entire Time.
I do this with babies, too. I also just carry on deep conversation, responding to baby noises like they answered in great depth. It's funny to hear about it from folks that don't Get It.
My spouse and I have mutual friends from different circles (Me: boardgaming, Her: quilting). One friend has had a couple of kids in the last few years, and at least one is around at any given time. The first few times I conversed with the kids, mom was very confused and asked my wife about it later. "Oh, yeah, he's always done that. Never an ounce of baby talk or cooing, just straight-up debates about stuff."
Last night at gaming, she "Yes, and-ed" me for the first time.
*Baby gurgles*
Me: "Well, yes, that happened in 1928."
Mom: "(Atomic), we all know that was 1932."
Me: "Yes, but Smoot-Hawley happened in the interim."
*Baby giggles*
Me: "See? He agrees."
We never talked baby-talk to our kids. Oddly enough, what it led to is them talking like intelligent little people from an early age ... rather startling strangers, at times.
I mean yeah, we sang to them, 'cos *babies*. But we always talked to them as people.

And for those people who have access to mobility devices but might benefit from a second chair they can abuse without risking expensive damage…
Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.
He also is working on cheap, open source, accessible designs for beach chairs, off road chairs, motorized attachments (think smart drive), and so on. Plus he skateboards in his wheelchair. Cool dude, helpful info, pass it on.
It's incredibly sad people have to resort to this, but it's a damn good resource. Use it. Spread awareness. Maybe one day people with physical disabilities won't need DIYs like this. But until then, reblog and share.

This is a view of the East and South canals. At least half of all the Phoenix metro canals were originally built by the Hohokam (from roughly 200-1400 CE), and are still in use (restored) today.
Phoenix, Arizona actually has more miles (kilometers) of Canals total than both Venice and Amsterdam. No, really. Phoenix has about 180 miles of canals, many of which are built on ancient canal foundations.

Also want to point out that many Indigenous nations literally decided to prioritise NOT building permanent buildings. That was a choice they made. You know what permanent human-created things they left instead? THE LITERAL LANDSCAPE. Even though the settlers did their best to destroy it, the landscape was still tended and shaped by Indigenous people. Every biome that exists here was created by some nation or other, every plant was encouraged or discouraged by the local people who ranged in that area.
But more to the point: I don't need fucking buildings to know that people have been here millions of years, the people are here telling me that, and I fucking listen to them.
sometimes u headcanon a character as a sexuality but then also ship things that contradict that. sometimes you ship things you would NEVER EVER want in canon. this is because these things are fun and silly and not legally binding.
Yeah I don't know where some people got this idea that fanfic is always like, auditioning to replace canon or being posited as "better" than canon, as opposed to people just borrowing the characters to play with in the sandpit for a while before putting them back in their box
