Bramble theories #7
Näcken ate the bramble flower
This theory goes hand in hand with theory #6. After encountering Tuva, Olle has to eliminate bramble vines in order to go to the town. These bramble vines have flowers growing in them:
There are four types of cursed humans in the game. King Nils, Näcken, Kärrhäxan and the undead. Only King Nils and Näcken are giant size. Its heavely implied that King Nils became a giant because he ate the bramble flower thanks to his storybook, the whole bramble bloom to be exact, but there is nothing said about that in Näcken's storybook, it ends with him living by the lake devastated and in sorrow. One could asume that these emotions are what made him became the insane monster we encounter in the game.
The thing is grief and sorrow is not enough to became a cursed human in this game… if it were then a lot of people from the plague villague would have become cursed titans after the plague had killed their loved ones and left them with nothing but despair yet it didnt happen.
When Olle has to go through the town covered by bramble we are shown that the Bramble vines can be quite fast in spreading throught the town, like…it takes them seconds to invade again the houses after Olle makes them go away with the lightrock.
So what if Näcken encountered them after sometime living in the lake?
In "Who you’ll meet: Näcken, The Dancing Fool" is stated that despite Näcken hating the town he still had to go there for food:
So he either wasnt a farmer or whatever food he managed to grow was not enough for him to sustain himself… and then he made the whole town dance to death before going to the lake. He probably managed to sustain himself for a while but after sometime and with his mental health deteriorating, there is a big possibility he started to starve.
Theres two things to point this being the case:
First, his appareance in the game
Näcken doesnt have any clothes on and he looks like someone who starved to death. Compare this with King Nails, he looks like a very old king but still looks alive and human.
Second and the most important, his personality. When Kings Nils ate the flower he did it in a state of pure grief for his son. When we found him, his personality is melancholic like in perpetual state of grief. With this we can conclude that what bramble does is that it amplifies the emotions of the person who eats it at that moment, making those feelings eternal and at the same time clouding their sanity so they become cannibals without noticing it.
So with this one could expect that when we found Näcken, his personality will be similar to the king because by the time he went to live by the lake he did it for grief. The storybook even specifies that "he was drowning in his sorrows". But when Olle finds him, he acts like this:
There is nothing in his personality that indicates he is feeling guilt, sorrow or even overall sadness. He acts like a predator. His emotions are in a loop of this: Calm when he is alone playing his violin
Sadism when he is hunting Olle
And frustration when he fails to eat him.
His behavior is…feral.
That along with his emaciated appearance could indicate a disturbing possibility. That he was in the final stage of starvation at the time he ate the bramble flower. In real life, starvation has devastating effects in the brain, it makes people do everything in order to survive. There are cases in which people became cannibals to avoid starvation in famines. Thats how bad it gets.
If Näcken was in that state when he came across the bramble vines with their flowers…then his behaviour when we found him makes sense. When he ate that flower, he wasnt grieving. He was starving, delirious and was eating anything he could get his hands on in order to survive.
So the bramble transformed him in an emotionally unstable, feral and obsessive giant who would do anything in order to eat his food (humans).
Bramble theories #6
Näcken is not a water spirit
He is a cursed human who lives in a pond. Although the game is based on Scandinavian folklore and in this Näcken is a water spirit, I think that in the game itself Näcken is just one of the three cursed humans. An indication that he is still human would be how he reacts to the lightstone that Olle carries as protection. Olle is able to damage both Skogsrå (female spirit) and Pesta (plague spirit) with this but it doesnt work against Näcken. At all. If you take out the lightstone while Näcken is chasing you through the mud, he will eat you anyway.
There is another being who the stonelight doesnt affect him: King Nils. In the battle with the King we have to destroy the Bramble flowers that are around him and the blast of light of the stone doesnt affect him at all.
It could be a sign that both King Nils and Näcken are both the same type of being: A cursed human.
The exception of this rule would be Kärrhäxan. A cursed human we had to defeat using the lightstone, but given her deal with the devil it makes sense her being affected by Tuva's magic because the only reason she was still alive was because the magic of the devil, not because of the Bramble's curse.
Another sign that Näcken is not a spirit is his death.
Like…breaking your back against a rock because of a fall is a very human type of death. With other spirits like Skogsrå and Pesta we always had to use magic to defeat them. There was no magic in the manner we defeat Näcken. Unless he isnt dead and just was knocked out because of the fall, but it was never confirmed.
I finished it!!! I got the idea to make the drawing when I was playing idv as Fool's Gold...Idk what that mechanic was thinking. It wasnt a friendly match but I was having a hard time hitting the survivors so...maybe she thought that I didnt notice her? Either way you should not get close to structures if your opponent is a Fools gold
Here is the evolution of the drawing:
Bramble theories #5
The Bramble did not curse Kärrhäxan.
There is no much information about Kärrhäxan's backstory in the game itself. At first she seems to be another human cursed by the bramble, but unlike Näcken and King Nils she lacks their gigantism and is directly affected by the magic rock.
Her storybook is just about a satanic ritual which implies she was a satanic witch. Its in "Bramble the Mountain King Art Book" where they showed us her backstory.
When I played the game I thought she was just a midwife who died in a tragic manner and then was cursed by the Bramble as a spirit but now we know: She was alive when Olle discovered her. We also have the information that she sought to have power and immortality through satanic rituals.
My theory is that she got it just not in the way she expected. The thing with Satanic pacts is that it tends to end badly…for the human. Satan is deceitful. Kärrhäxan got her immortality and powers (some form of telekinesis) after sacrificing enough babies but when the villagers wanted to lynch her, her power was not enought to defeat them and she was overwhelmed…and burned alive in a cross.
But she did not die.
Because the devil kept his promise.
But the devil never promised her anything about giving her the ability to regenerate wounds.
So Kärrhäxan stayed there, with third degree burns that would never heal, tied to the cross. Forever.
It explains her normal size as well as her being affected by the magic rock. Kärrhäxan's magic was from evil so it makes sense that it would be repelled by Tuva's magic which is the embodiment of hope and resilience.
Bramble theories #4
The village covered in Bramble was Näcken's town.
After Tuva heals us. Olle has to go through this town that is covered in Bramble and has to avoid a giant flower. The village is deserted and there are no signs of trapped people or zombies. Its posible that this is Näcken's town. After Näcken made everyone dance to death, the bramble came and overtook the whole town. According to the post in steam about Näcken's backstory of Dimfrost Studios (Who you’ll meet: Näcken, The Dancing Fool) Näcken started to play the forbidden melodies in the town square:
and while you hide from the giant flower you can see the town square. Which is now the nest of the main flower:
Tuva also said this which I think gives more credence to this theory:
If this is the Näcken's town it makes sense that the bramble would have covered it after something so dark happened.
Bramble theories #3
There was a girl who didn't make it out of the woods
The story of the first storybook is about a girl who was attacked by bramble and was never seen again. Since all the Storybooks we find later are about stories that really happened, then that means that probably some time before Olle and Lillemor went to the woods there was a girl who also did the same but unlike them, she did not find the magic white rock and went much deeper into the forest, encountering the bramble and could not escape.
It also leaves the question whether or not the adults knew what was going on in the forest? That their mother read this story to Lillemor as a warning seems to indicate to me that at least she knew that there were certain plants that were dangerous within the forest.
Bramble theories #2
Näcken has very VERY poor eyesight
Its as if he were almost blind. When we fight the mountain king, there is a scene that says something like "And the king could see clearly for the first time in years" and shows us how the king saw Olle, all blurry.
Näcken and the mountain king are both humans who were cursed by the bramble. They both have similar symptoms such as giant stature so it's possible that if the king is almost blind then Näcken's vision is also in the same state and that's why he failed to kill Olle the two times he had Olle in front of him.
Bramble theories #1
I had been thinking about posting my theories about the game here for quite some time but idk why I didn't just do it so here it goes:
It was not the first time they entered into the magic realm
I think this is the theory that has the most evidence. In the first minutes of the game we learn that their mother has been reading them the first story book as a warning to Lillemor of what could happen to her if she keep going in to the forest.
When Olle leaves his room to follow his sister and we enter the woods we can see small statues of the pinecones.
Also when they enter the magical world they don't seem very surprised to see the gnomes. In fact, Lillemor and Olle go to investigate deeper into the woods.
I think Olle and Lillemor had already entered the magical world a couple of times before but on those occasions they didnt encounter the trolls so for them it was just a very happy adventure with the gnomes and the pinecones. And when they returned home, Olle or Lillemor made the pinecone statues as a way to remember what they found Deep in the forest.
My first gmv!!! I will never forget this beautiful game
