I’ve had this conversation in private, but brooklynn is honestly a great non-ableist depiction of NPD traits. she holds extremely self-grandiose ideas (in that she alone is the key to stopping a whole crime empire) and in pursing these ideas she shows a willingness to use people (as the show critiques) and a lack of understanding that her actions may deeply hurt people (like with her friends in s4). but NPD is also characterized by deep self-loathing and relying on others because your internal self-esteem is fractured due to trauma in childhood. brooklynn cares deeply about the opinions of people who matter (n6) and it drives her to suicidal tendencies. and it makes sense for someone who experienced childhood fame to lack internal self-regulation and strong sense of self because fame that young is inherently traumatic for children. it’s too much stimuli and too much expectation while in a crucial development stage. it makes sense that brooklynn would have issues with empathy (as a famous child used to having things handed to her along with thousands of fans adoring her) while it also makes sense that she heavily needs validation from outside sources (such as sponsors and the fans) to make up for her lack of self-soothing because she was fundamentally denied this crucial development stage. she can be an asshole, yes, and it will hurt people if she doesn’t put in the work, but she absolutely is willing to put in the work. she’s aware of her shortcomings more than ever and she’ll likely be working on them heavily going forward.

#yes #ppl are sooooo dismissive of brooklynn #but like. think about the life she has lived thus far #and think about how that impacted her developing brain #there’s so much to unpack and talk about and appreciate #and people just throw the damn suitcase into the mosasaur enclosure

In early 2016, an ao3 fic that hasn't been updated in eight months is finally updated with the Authors note of:

"Hey, guys! Sorry it took so long to get to this update! I know I told yall my summer camp thing was only supposed to take a few weeks, but then Jurassic World (where the camp was) shut down cause of the Indominus Rex killing a bunch of people and me and my camp buddies got left behind and then stuck on the island for six months. But we're all okay now and home safe with our families! Yay us!"

Comments are filled with:

"What the fuck," and "is this real," and "holy shit dude, is author one of the fucking Nublar Six? That's so badass."

In solidarity (and due to embarrassed begging on the author's part), all Nublar Six post on their Instagram that the ao3 account is theirs, that way nobody can truly know who's it is. Ten years down the line, people still don't know, and every now and then, it'll be brought back up, especially when the ao3 account posts another story.

i think it's often worth examining if you're writing yasmina as muslim because you truly think her implied family history and personal values reflect levantine muslims or if you're doing it out of the very racist assumption that all middle eastern = muslim. lebanon is one of the most religiously and ethnically diverse countries in the region.

i think important questions to ask before making this headcanon are:

can you even name the two main sects of islam? which each compose roughly 1/3rd of lebanon

do you know who the druze are? do you know what an orthodox christian is and how they differ from western christians? can you meaningfully differentiate orthodox christian and muslim beliefs without looking at religious garments?

can you explain the reason they split? and their cultural differences?

can you explain why she'd practice/hold onto these practices?

if you don't have answers for questions like these, i urge you to investigate your own orientalism. many of the most good meaning people perpetuate it, because in the west it's all you'll be taught. the west believes that indian = hindu and arab = muslim and middle eastern = arab and south asian = indian, etc. etc. these are easy boxes that simplify us for racist rhetoric. being anti-racist means understanding asia as a place just as diverse as the west. some middle easterners are non-arab armenian christians and most muslims are actually southeast asian! don't be afraid to do research into history. it can only improve you writing and art.
