Orpheus, who is very much aware of the cycle of love and tragedy he and Eurydice are trapped in—who knows how the story ends, how close he gets to leaving Hadestown with his beloved—still actively choosing to continue the cycle, even to his own detriment, if only to see Eurydice again. If only to fall in love with her all over again, to play the role of a naive songwriter, to pretend like all will be well, like maybe it will turn out this time. Reliving the same moment, the same story, again and again, like someone watching a recording of a loved one, reminiscing about times gone by. He will never be whole again, nothing will be the same as the first time he lived the story, but he is willing to go to hell and back again over and over if it means he gets to see Eurydice one more time.
