Y'all this is a piece of history right here. Every single time you see a reference to a "shovel talk" in fic, defined here as "someone threatening harm to a potential romantic partner of a friend/loved one," it's referencing this scene. This scene specifically. Everywhere else that is not fannish internet, that interaction is referred to a "shotgun talk," referencing the father threatening a daughter's boyfriend with a shotgun. This scene gave a lot of people a chance to reframe that interaction in terms of a protective friend rather than a possessive father, which for a lot of obvious reasons resonated with people a whole fucking lot, and it immediately spread like wildfire into fannish and then general internet lexicon. I've seen people try and backronym it into an extension of the shotgun talk, as in, "I've got a shotgun and a shovel to bury you with," but I've asked a lot of rednecks from a lot of different necks of the woods and no one has ever encountered that variant in brickspace life. It's all Buffy, babey. This shit is linguistic history in the making.
I know Whedon is bad and obviously today’s young’uns don’t have the same relationship with Buffy, but being skeptical of its place in creating online - and even offline* - vocabulary and speech patterns is so mad to me. TV Tropes started as a Buffy site!
*I swear we didn’t use ‘hey’ as a greeting in the uk till Buffy started airing. I know that’s gonna sound stupid to anyone even a couple of years younger than me and to be fair i can’t back it up with anything besides me noticing it at the time but we didn’t!

Went to the beach specifically looking for tiger beetles the other day and was delighted to find and photograph many beautiful specimens! Perhaps most lovely of all, this White Beach Tiger Beetle. They’re a fun challenge for me, as their speed and agility can make them tough to catch in focus.
I think the way I feel when I look at tiger beetles is probably similar to the way rich men who like golf feel when they see a particularly expensive sports car. There is just nothing cooler, faster, and more sleekly beautiful than a tiger beetle. If you sit and really watch them for a while you’ll see them race over sand so fast you can lose them if you blink. They will suddenly lunge forward and pounce like leopards to catch prey in their massive jaws, then intuitively use the wind currents around them to navigate the shoreline. They have huge eyes and you can see them watching you back, with a certain focus that is unmistakable.
The tiger beetle family (Cicindelidae) exists in many places across the globe. If you have them near you, I strongly encourage you head out to try and spot a tiger beetle for yourself someday. They’re simply one of the coolest fucking insects alive on this planet.

oh do I have the game for you
I could . not. put. this down for 48 hours - stayed up too late, had weird dreams about it, woke up early, and played it while I was supposed to be doing other things. the last several dozen items took a lot of googling, which I do not even begrudge it.
and then. My partner started it. And the SAME THING happened to him.
surprisingly compelling. start when you have free time. like, yanno, a snow day.
I showed this to my autistic son yesterday and he's done NOTHING else since (outside of eating and bathroom breaks).
