The Red Headed League

Came across this fun artist's book 'The Red Headed League' - a collaborative project initiated by Michael Day and Lesley Guy back in 2012, inspired by the Sherlock Holmes short story. Still have two copies available. Have added them to the shop.

The Red Head League is a collaborative artist’s book initiated by Michael Day and Lesley Guy (as Furlough) and was inspired by the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Red-Headed League.

The project employed the services of thirteen red-headed artists to respond to entries from the Encyclopedia Britannica.

Book as Biography: The British Library, Yinka Shonibare

The British Library is a large and colourful artwork by Yinka Shonibare which comprises a huge collection of specially bound reclaimed books, covered in vibrant Dutchwax fabric and embossed in gold with the names of notable British figures who were born outside the UK or have non-British ancestry. The volume of books and the number of well-known names is surprising, drawing our attention to the rich and expansive impact migrants have had on British daily life and culture, a debt that sometimes seems overlooked to me.

Photo © Chris Gibson, 2019 The boldness of the colours give this library a vibrant character and otherworldly air - it would contrast dramatically with the subdued aged muted volumes that populate the collection of the real British Library.

Photo © Chris Gibson, 2019 The colours are appealing and the weight of each tome makes me want to reach out to leaf through it, to get to know the characters that these represent. The books themselves are described as reclaimed - stripped of their covers the library would tell a dramatically different story, but an undoubtedly diverse one in the way that all library collections are.

The artwork was previously exhibited as part of the Diaspora Pavillion at the Venice Biennale.

The Library of Chance Encounter

Limited Stock - £15 'The Library of Chance Encounter' is a pocket-sized artwork which tells the story of a single meeting between two people and the influence that shared experience has. The work is comprised of a series of cards which contain a text, an image or a barcode that can be read with a smartphone. The images and barcodes link to real books (which can be read online) and collectively these create a virtual library, a library that spins out from that one chance encounter. The artwork was commissioned by Editorial Facsimile for the exhibition 'Small Publishing Unfair!' - an exhibition about miniature books held at Camberwell College of Art library.

Library of Chance Encounter - Cards "My intention is to create a work that is intimate in size and pleasing to hold and engage with. This kind of one-to-one encounter with the work is important as it heightens the personal nature of the unfolding story. I’m intrigued by the potential that technology holds (especially in providing seemingly unlimited access to literature) and I love the tension created by combining virtual and physical elements because over time the work could begin to fragment, just like memory, as links become broken."- Chris

The Hesitant Visitor

'The Hesitant Visitor' was created to be experienced as part of an evening of performance at Senate House Library entitled 'Reading as Art: Turning the Pages of Victorian Psychology'. The artwork is comprised of three leaflets, which are named after one of the library's beautiful reading rooms and a character from history that is related to Victorian Psychology. The 'books' are: Durning-Lawrence: Francis GaltonGoldsmiths': Mary ShelleyPalaeography: Charles Babbage

The Hesitant Visitor - All Three Books - On Display in Senate House Each 'book' has the same appearance, with covers that feature the stone that clads Senate House's public areas and wood on the interior that reflects the surfaces of the desks and furniture throughout the space.

The Hesitant Visitor - All Three Books - On Display in Senate House Each contains a short story set in the particular reading room, which links the space with the library's wider collection. On the back of each are references for further reading. "The reading rooms at Senate House are incredible spaces, full of history and atmosphere - it was great to get chance to visit them let-alone make an artwork that responds to them. Researching the theme of the evening (Victorian Psychology) turned up lots of interesting connections - I hope you find the finished work as compelling to read as it was to make."- Chris

This Journey is a Book

'This Journey is a Book' is a site-specific artwork made for Peckham Library, comprised of ten books (or chapters) scattered right across the library's collection. Each chapter has the name of the book that it sits next to on the shelf and when read together the books take the reader on a journey across the breadth of the library.

This Journey is a Book - Installation View- Camberwell College The work was created at Camberwell College of Art for my MA final show and has subsequently been exhibited at Winchester School of Art, the Kiev International Book Fair, and in London as part of the group show Imprimatur, by the print-on-demand book company Blurb. The work is an edition of ten, one of which can be found in Chelsea College of Art's artists' book collection.

The artefact provided contextual information about the work. A copy of the Preface is part of the Ephemera Collection in the shop.

Convergences

Ephemera Collection - £4 (last few) 'Convergences' is a short, but densely layered book-work that was commissioned by the artist Sharon Kivland as a part of Leeds College of Art's 'Library Interventions' series.

For the project Kivland employed the services of several artists to read on her behalf and provide a 'report' on what they found.

'Convergences' is the result of that reading and charts the artist's journey as a reader through Leeds College's library collection, via the art work and influences of Kivland. The resulting journey throws up old memories and the past, present, fact and fiction begin to converge.

"I hugely enjoyed the opportunity to be a reader for Sharon Kivland, as it gave me a chance to get to know her work in more detail, and step into her shoes by imagining the books she may have chosen. The visit was a chance to return to West Yorkshire, my old home, and revisit memories from my time there. During the making process, which mostly took place in and around my workplace of South Kensington, the story of that real journey began to take shape; revealing an intriguing set of convergences." - Chris
